Hot news!Multiplayer will come with in an official add on!

Thanks for the good news.

Any word on what else is going to be included? Like maybe additional units, civs, leaders, etc., the ability to pick player starting locations (without having to use one of the applications floating around the forum) and fixing it so all the civ colours can be used without crashing the game, and MOST IMPORTANTLY (for me, anyway) improved editing and scenario creation tools?

I think the cynics among us already figured this plan out already - ship an unfinished product out, then complete it for an extra $40. It seems to be the common mode of operation anymore, and its sad to see Firaxis adopt it.

Yup, and like the bright-eyed naively innocent consumer that I am, I'm just so dazzled that they did it at all to be bitter. :)

Firaxis: "Look-- multiplayer! and that's not all..."

Dannyevilcat:"Ooooh, wow! That's neat-O!"

:D

LOl, well, they have identified their market at least :)

I guess the saying is true- nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American Consumer.

Well, except for the XFL :)

:D so they plan to release MP add-on first, no word of scenario add on that adds scenario editor to the game? When both have finally been released (both were originally promissed in original civ 3 release) I'll maybe actually buy the game IF all 3 cost same as 1 normal game.

:crazyeyes lol like I said earlier.
They first release the game, then MP and scenario add-ons and finally when they've ripped people off with those they release gold edition that will include what was originally promissed. :D   :p

I am glad to see Firaxis are a professional software company, gee if they were stupid enough to release the game with MP and scenerios all in one package for the same price, i would have lost all respect for them and thought they were managed by a group of socialist nunns.

This puts Firaxis up there with all the elite software companies that release ad ons constantly for a price :goodjob:

As in all life, everyone can by the basics for a cost, if you want more and are into the game enough to want more, then you pay more, just like buying a snow feeze from Mcdonalds, if you want the flake added to it, you pay a bit more :D

we should probably wait for facts before we castrate them vehemently. Not that I am not cheesed off at them already for the poor Q/A, the lack of input of the developers, and who knows what else, but I will wait for facts.

Fact 1) Fayadi is tiresomely critical.

For those of you who dont believe me go and read December 2001 pcgameplay.
Firaxis are a horrondous businessman.
Even with those poor business tactics,I will still buy CivIII MP:(

Even if you think it's wrong for them to have released the multiplayer addon separately, most of you will still buy it...so their business model is right. Plus, Civ 3 is alot more of a finished product than alot of games this day and age. :)

Fayadi why do you say Firaxis had poor business practice? I am sure a very small percentage of people who wanted CIV III wouldn't have not purchased it because of no MP ability, but many of them will pay for the add on. therefore it was a very good business practice, something all companies take advantage of, and so therefore shouldn't be held against firaxis, as beleive it or not, possibly not even 1% of CIV players would even care about a MP option or scenerios.

Computer games these days are all about marketiing, it seems. It would appear that the trend is for the publisher to ship the game as soon as it's decently playable, not when the designers think it's done. Many games also seem to have their "expansion pack" created simultaneously with the game, those added features are intentionally left out of the initial release to create another product for additional sales.

Go look in your Civ folder for the file jackal.txt. It would appear to be various error messages pertaining to connection to multiplayer games. But... there isn't multiplayer ability in Civ 3. Yet. :)

Personally I don't care to have either MP or scenario abilities with Civ3. I am actually happy that they didn't include these in the original edition if it would have meant that it cost more. I don't want to use them and don't want to pay for them.

I bought, and extensively used, Civ2 and never felt the need for MP or scenarios. And from what I picked up along the way I would have wanted to upgrade to Civ2 Gold, at least, if I wanted these. So I never expected them to be available with the original release of Civ3.

I am quite happy with the money I spent the day Civ3 was released, (I actually got to the store before they had unpacked the game so I had to wait awhile), and will more than get my money out of it with all the hours it will occupy. I would like one more patch to fix the obvious errors in the game but I have been having fun playing since day one.

The above are my thoughts as an avid player. Now, if I put on my CPA/business advisor hat.....hey, same thoughts. If some players want more abilities, get the base game out for most of the people and then release an upgrade that will satisfy those that want more at an additional cost. Don't make the many pay for the few.

I am soon going to be a business man and I know using these tactics would ruin the image of Firaxis.Anybody who are sort of money will be angered and dont buy their products anymore

"possibly not even 1% of CIV players would even care about a MP option or scenerios."

these are really funny, when CivIII came out that day many people complained. We do care about the MP and scenraio. We keep quiet doesnt mean we dont care about the Mp and scenario

"Personally I don't care to have either MP or scenario abilities with Civ3. I am actually happy that they didn't include these in the original edition if it would have meant that it cost more. I don't want to use them and don't want to pay for them. "

Come on all new computer games normally cost the highest about $60 or $70 the most. They wont put high prices because nobody will buy then!

I don't mind paying $20-$30 for an expansion pack...expansion packs usually add a lot more to a game

Firaxis made a good game, and they are continuing support for it with the expansion pack... do you expect your $40/$50 to go so far as to allow Firaxis to pay it's employees for a year?

This is not ruining the image of Firaxis at all.

If you are so outraged by this, then perhaps you shouldn't buy the pack, it's your choice as a consumer.

I'd be really happy if it will be downloadable for free. But if they come out with a multiplayer Civ III with lots more units and some scenarios, Id get it.

If it is only Multi-player I see no point in getting it myself. $20 to $30 bucks is to much for not getting a whole game. Maybe if it adds new content, not just a little. More editing, and some nice other features to make it worth while.

Oh great! They are gonna relese another buggy product. They havent even gotten the original release fixed yet, but they are gonna make an addon! WOW! See how fast I run out an buy that! This is absolutly ********. WTH!?!?! Why dont they get the original game straight first.Maybe they are just doing the finish move on themselves.Fatality! How dumb. If they had released this game good the addon would be strong, a good move.I think they are gonna do themselves in though. They are just rideing on all the good hype they got from reveiwers who played the game for like 10 mins and said its the best ever. FIX THE ONE WE HAVE FIRST, THEN MAYBE WE WILL CONSIDER BUYING AND EXPANSION.THAT IS IF ITS NOT ALL BUGGY, You can bet I wont buy it.
