As can be seen on this thread, a proposal has been sent to Civ3 developers Firaxis and publishers Atari, inquiring about the possibility of including an extra CD with the up-coming Civ3: Conquests expansion.

The CD would contain:
• New Versions of the Top Mods made for the game – such as DyP, Ancient Mediterranean & TETurkhan and a few more…
• New Unit Animation & Leaderheads: Minimum of 100 units & 10 animated leaderheads with supporting Civilopedia art. All of which will be specifically designed for the mods found on the CD – so in essence 10 new Civs.
• New Sound Effects
• New Interface Screen: Completely transform the menu screens into a new distinct look
• New Terrain Types
• 5 New Scenarios: Very unique & innovative in comparison to anything made for the game to date

Firstly I want to thank all of you that have taken the time to vote. It is people like you that help drive the industry to achieve excellence by demanding the game makers to constantly do more. This is the exact end we are striving to achieve with this “Best of the Net” CD.

Just to address the concerns some of you might have. Our first point is simply this; At present there are limitations that stop the mod makers from doing their best work and the biggest single factor being time availability. This project will simply eliminate obstacles that hinder mod makers and thereby aid their ‘labor of love’ and compensate them for their time in order to drive the game to a new level of excellence.

Many people believe that this should be included for free anyway but the truth of the matter is the cost of hiring a team to develop this project would far exceed the cost effectiveness of doing so. We are tapping into the passion that mod makers have for the game in order to be capable of taking this already great game to a new level.

For the rest of you that take the time to fill in our poll, please understand that this work would not be available without this project.

Once again thank all of you for your input, stay positive and hopefully we will have this CD included for the upcoming expansion of Civilization 3.

Note: Jeff from Atari has made clear in his post here in this thread that the price of Conquests will be similarly priced as PTW. Therefore talk of paying extra is incorrect and not applicable. Thus the poll has been changed and the new question being: What do you think this CD for Civ III should be worth? Its too bad the changes were not done earlier before so many people voted no they wouldn't want to pay extra (total of 63 I believe)

It depends on the price of C3C

The cheaper the price, the more I'll pay for the expansion

I voted for $10, but it is likely that I wouldn't pay more than $30 base price for the expansion (40 with the Best of Net CD), so Firaxis would have to price appropreiately (if they charged 40 or 50 for the XP without anything, I would wait anyway)

It depends on the cost of the XP, but if it was around $30 US, then I would be willing to pay $10, and maybe $15 extra for the Best of the Net. Another consideration, for me anyway, would be the extras to be on the Best and the regular stuff on C3C since this could increase/decrease my decision on how much I was willing to pay.

Nothing.

Mods for free, either on the net or packaged with the game, are fine. When you start charging for mods that are not Firaxis developed you bring in a whole issue of accountability. Firaxis did an awful job of screening the previous submissions that it included with PTW - which is acceptable because we did not pay more for them. But as soon as the consumer begins paying for such content, there has to be someone to hold accountable for quality control. IMHO, if Firaxis and Atari are smart, they won't touch this with a 10 foot pole.

I would pay an extra 40 - $XX where X = any number.

This would mena i would get two x-pacs. The best of the net would have MORE than C3C anyways. So i will pay any cost.

They will proly release the Xpac at the standard $40 ($50 is it is raw game 40 for the Xpac.). Include this and we are looking at 80-100 dollars. But think. 18 NEW CIVS!!!! 5 NEW TERRAIN TYPES!!!! (this is including C3C.)

Sparrowhawk - Quality control concerns not only apply to Firaxis & Atari but also for us. Many of the people partaking in this project have solid reputations for creating top notch work and we want to maintain our reputations as well. We are determined to give people a final product that I am certain many of you would be more than happy with. This is not going to be some CD that is slapped together last second all in order to make a quick buck. If people involved in this project are compensated, it’s only in order to free their time so they can commit to such a large undertaking. I think this CD will surprise everyone – We are all ready to put our best work we have ever done forward. Snoopy, Sween, Kalel, Thamis, and for so many more this venture is the realization of everything we could hope for – A CD made by modders. Call my over-confident but I know for myself and others aboard this team, we are prepared to work day and night to give you people something that will go far beyond any of your expectations. Those are mighty big words and claims – all we need is the opportunity to deliver on them.

One last point: The proposal sent to Firaxis addresses quality control issues and there are clauses that will ensure this will not be an issue.

Anything as long as it is quality! ;)

Edit: That is only because I made an agreement with my parents that if they don’t buy me PTW until fall, (when Conquests comes out) that they will buy me the new expansion and a few other games no matter what the cost is.

I have to say I agree with a lot of the people on here -- it depends on the price of the expansion.

I'd be willing to pay quite a bit for the Best of the Net CD. It really seems like it's got more in it than PTW did when it was released.

I think I'd be happy to pay $35 and possibly willing to pay as high as $40 for the expansion if it comes with this CD. How much of that goes to the Best of the Net is up to Firaxis. I would hope that at least $10 goes to the CD, and that the money actually goes to the makers of the mods.

This "Best of the net CD" sounds like a bigger expansion as the expansion made by Atari/Firaxis so it's worth a lot to me. At least 20$ on top of the price of the Conquests expansion.

I wouldn't pay too much more, since its really not fair. These things should be put on automatically. We all want more scenarios, and I'd think that by the SECOND expansion they would ship with them...but I guess I'm wrong.

You probably don't understand that it is not as easy to create a game and ship with everything that *all* civ players want.

Why pay for something you can legally get online for free...

So you don't have to download it ;)

If these mods are as good as they are supposed to be, then it would take an insane amount of time to down load (tet's is 80 megs, right?) and would also probably have people at firaxis look over it and the whole works.

I'd pay $10 more to get this, under the conditions these mods are as good as their suposed to be and the game is $30-$40.

The CD will contain material that is almost all newly created, not stuff you can already download online for free. The name Best of the Net is somewhat misleading, what it refers to is the top mod makers, unit designers etc online coming together to create a CD composed of the best work they can create.

The question here is do you want the top mod makers to work on such a CD project and have this included with Conquests – and what value would this represent to you? This is the reason behind the poll.

Pasi Nurminen - I agree with you in that I also would not want to buy something I can already download for free! :) but this clearly is not the case here.

I really like this idea.
i'd drop an extra $10, but hope that its a non profit addition. Sounds like a constructive project that would be good for creator and for purchaser.
; )

I voted $15 but that's the upper limit. I plan on asking for it for X-mas or buy it after if no one buys it for me.
