One thing that happens that bothers me is the messages. The messages I am talking about are like when you take over a barbarian town, etc and the little text appears. My problem is that the text is not there long enough to read it before the game jumps to the next unit or whatever.

Anyone else have this problem? Is there a fix for it?

I've seen the same problem. Its really hard to notice what the messages are saying and I even turned on Font Smoothing just like the program asks you too. What gives.

I completely agree. This is a huge problem for me. I like to take my time when I play a game like this and now, every time a turn ends, I have to be glued to the screen and read ultra fast. Then, I must remember all cities that have revolted by heart, etc.. And why couldn't they make the unhappy people red as in Civ 2 ? It would have been MUCH easier to see if your city is back in business.

Anyway. This will probably never be fixed.

Enjoy.

I think they will deal with this issue in a patch. It's a common complaint I think, I've heard it from a few sources. It wouldn't be hard, I don't think, to put in an option in the preferences to "pause after city messages" or something like that, so you have to hit enter after each, that way you won't miss any.

And they need to indicate cities in disorder on the F1 page a lot better, and have the sorting stick after you click on a heading, instead of reverting to the default sorting after a few seconds.

But I can't imagine those aren't patchable issues!

Cities in revolt are shown as "smoking" on the map screen, and the color of the box holding the city size number will turn red as well. After you've patched things up, those two visual cues should subside.

As for the "little" messages, there's a fine line between leaving them onscreen so long they become a nuisance and flashing them up too quickly. The reason they're even in the game is to cut down on all the needless pop-ups that you saw in Civ II, for stuff that may or may not be immediately important.

I understand leaving them on the screen too long would be a problem.

I checked my other game I am playing (SMAC/X) and it handles it by having a information box that these things appear in and slownig scroll off the top.

Ah well, small issue I guess. I still love the game.:D

"font smoothing"? How do I do that? Maybe that's why it's been running so bad on my 'puter.....

Considering the variance in reading rates among people, how about an option in the first patch to have the player decide how long a message will stay onscreen? Either a graded "short" to "long" duration scale, or a box in which we can type the number of seconds a message lasts?

From all that I've read, good job so far (for a variety of reasons, I won't be able to play 'til after next week), with notable exceptions. However, I'm glad to see that the team is dedicated to fixing incomplete features.
