Hired Goon
Part I
1752
The year was almost over, but for a few items to be rushed with government funds there was little to do.
Except plan.
The people at St. Leowind were recovering still not to mention the buildings and the military stationed there. Those who were there at the St. Leowind massacre would forever be able to relate those events that occurred when the Chinese broke a treaty supposedly sealed with their word. Those who were not there or old enough to remember could very well live that day through the memories of those who would never forget.
The families of those on the undefended transport would also have long memories. Their sons and daughters had no means to defend against the Chinese war ship, though fight they did.
Those of the Inner Circle would never forget as well. It happened on their watch, and while there would be no way to bring back those who were lost, they at least could exact some measure of retribution.
Destroying their civilization in its entirety sounded good.
We know that still waters run deep, and the look of inactivity on behalf of the Fanatics may have seemed to others as inability to respond. Hence, pacts were made, out of jealousy or out of a false sense of power, to contain United Fanatica and bring them down. Little did they know. The Fanatics would break the still waters like a shark dispatching its prey.
1752:
Some rush building ensues thanks to a government surplus. A spy is generated out of St. Leowind, eager to be a part of the revenge. An elite group of troops are given skis and rifles and will also be involved as well.
Word reaches the capital:
The foolish English have broken the cease-fire that they themselves had requested. The nearby city of Ormuz had recently fallen into Fanatic hands, and it would seem that the English had long wanted this city for their own though their diplomatic stance with the Mongols prevented it. No such situation with United Fanatica would stop them, however, as their military attacked without notice.
A dragoon regiment attacks and kills our lone riflemen defenders. The dragoons, however, are so decimated that they cannot move any further. A lesser group of knights then attack but are defeated by the ironclad stationed in the city. The last group of English dragoons apparently cannot get by the Mongol partisans and decide to retreat. The city remains in Fanaticas hands.
1754:
The fruits of rushing:
St. Leowind trains a spy and begins to train engineers
Spice Haven builds a marketplace and begins freight
Becka-Becka builds a harbor and starts a coastal fortress
Kevholm builds a harbor and starts a coastal fortress
Dellville builds an oil freight and starts an aqueduct (supposed to be marketplace, but it is a size 8 city with good food production. I hope the governors are OK with this).
Dover creates a spy and begins a harbor. Plans are made to plant some trees nearby soon.
Cornmaster builds freight and starts some more
Viroconium builds a temple and starts a rifleman (for the new city)
Fort Pornstar builds freight and begins the starting work for a new wonder
Hippoville builds freight and starts more
Potopolia builds freight and starts some more
Unknown City replaces its rifle division and starts an aqueduct (again, supposed to be factory but its size 8 as well)
In response to the cowardly English attack, our ironclad in Ormuz does away with the straggling dragoons still alive. Cavalry heads to the city, and engineers will be dispatched to connect Ormuz to the other cities on the island. No further English units are in sight. A spy is sent to Ormuz and boards the transport there. It heads north to see what Brighton is all about.
Coal from Dukeshire is delivered to THDP and earns us 127 gold and a nice science boost. Oil follows for 44 gold. Salt is set up back to Dukeshire. The gems freight still set to go to Mpondo.
In the dead of night, a transport heads out of Joespaniel with an ironclad for support. Inside are 4 cavalry, the alpine troops, and the St. Leowind spy.
Word reaches the capital:
A Roman cannon is seen next to Dukeshire. The English are milling about but will not cause any more difficulty. A Chinese ironclad approaches the Joespaniel attack group.
While the Inner Circle practice their skeet shooting, attackers flying a red flag land and attack the city of Olympia. The Inner Circle is called to service, and with apparent glee and relish they help defend the walls of the city. Bets are wagered, and Dell collects the kitty for his skill in killing dopes on horseback. The leader of this attack has landed and is being guarded by some dragoons. They are near out engineer corps, so we may have to attack them preemptively. It would seem that these are merely hirelings for the cowardly Chinese, and the attack has done nothing more than to solidify the resolve of the Inner Circle.
1756:
Our riflemen kill the dragoons and the leader of the hirelings. Their heads are put upon spikes and put aboard the next ship heading to Chinese waters. The Inner Circle wonders if the Chinese will be around long enough for this gesture to do any good.
Our spy lands near the city of Brighton, and posing as a Mongol tennis player is allowed full run of the city. She sees two musket brigades and hears that this city also supports dragoons and two settler contingents. The city has a temple, but nothing other than that though they are trying to build a marketplace. In speaking with some residents between matches, she is told that for 283 gold the city would overthrow the English dorky aristocracy and ally themselves with Fanatica. Our spy agrees for this price, and escapes back to Unknown City just before her final match against an up-and-coming Roman lefty. We get the city now size 3 along with 33 gold. City walls are started here.
A rifle brigade is rushed in Ormuz. Just in case.
Dukeshire cavalry defeats the Roman cannons before they can fire a single shot.
Many freight help to move the completion date of the UN closer.
This year will be forever known as the beginning of the end of the Chinese civilization. Operation Leowinds Revenge is put into play. Our spy lands and checks out the city of Beijing. Inside, behind city walls, are FIVE musketeers. Egads! Not the place to be. Nanking shows to have 3 musketeers with no city walls. As our spy approaches, the Chinese ask for an audience and are refused. The Senate does not interfere!
The first stage of the attack comes in the form of our ironclad. The ship bombards the city, and a veteran group of musketeers returns fire. Alas, our ironclad is defeated though it almost crushes the defenders.
Our troops begin landing and attacking from shore positions. The first group of cavalry slay a group of musketeers and is conveyed veteran status. The second group does the same exact thing. The third group finishes off the decimated veteran brigade, but is too wounded to continue -although veterans now as well. Our forth takes the city. We get the size 7 city of Nanking, 46 gold and a barracks for our armies. The transport ship then docks and the alpine troops fortify. The spy enters the city as well. Our foothold on the Chinese mainland is established, and the city starts a rifle division for extra defense.
Four groups of partisans then scramble about the city and one group asks for a cease-fire. General Ren agrees for now to be sure we can bring our veteran cavalry into the city and heal them. We shall see how long this lasts.
Word reaches the capital:
The Chinese partisans keep their word and begin to head toward Tsingtao and other areas.
The English come calling and ask for a cease-fire after we refuse to give them conscription. We agree for now as we wish to solidify our hold on the new cities.
Rome and the Chinese have governments overthrown. Rome calls on us:
Envoy: I think we should have a cease-fire
Spice: That would be awful boring.
Envoy: Look, well give you one if you pay us 150 gold.
[The Inner Circle all look at one another in disbelief]
Spice: PULL!
The war with the Romans continues.
The animal skins on the throne room is exchanged for some nice tile.
1758:
Cornmaster builds freight and begins a library
Hippoville builds freight and starts a factory.
Dukes brilliant minds at Newton University have shocked themselves silly and have come away with electricity. Streets are now lighted at night, and neon signs announcing the whereabouts of the houses of ill repute dot some of the larger cities. Requests from the Inner Circle call for electronics.
IC: Yeah, electronics
Duke: Didnt we JUST discover that?
IC: No, that was electrICITY. We want elctrONICS.
Duke: Sigh. This is going to involve more shocking, isnt it.
IC: Take one for the team, Dukie boy!
THDP builds freight, but with no commodity available it packs it with food. This addition should get us right about finished with the UN. THDP starts a bank with the idea of changing to sewer when sanitation is ours.
Roads connect Ormuz to the southern portion of the island, and plans are being made to get Brighton connected as well.
The tennis spy leaves Unknown City and heads north. It will do some exploring perhaps find the mysterious Germans.
Dukeshire cavalry crushes Roman catapults near the city. Again. This time the cavalry earns a veteran rating. Engineers head to the swamps on Viroconium Island to carve out a place for a city. Others head to the hills near Dukeshire to continue a road toward Brundisium.
The spy from Nanking checks out Tsingtao. It now has six defenders thanks to the partisans involved. It is size 8 with 2 muskets and a transport inside. It also has a granary, temple, marketplace, library, harbor and supports a dragoon somewhere. The Chinese are now communist and therefore bribable. Tsingtao would cost 1027 gold to convert too much for now.
Word reaches the capital:
The Romans have switched to Fundamentalism!! Nice to have the Statue of Liberty. We must watch for increased attacks soon. The Romans then sign the Lugdunum Pact with the English to contain the Fanatics.
The Germans give sanitation to the Romans and the Chinese as well.
The Zulus and Mongols have signed the Kazan Pact against us.
1760:
Our spy steals sanitation from Tsingtao and returns to Nanking unharmed. THDP changes to sewer system. Enough freight gets to Olympia to finish the UN.
Word reaches the capital:
Mongols are nearly finished with the UN and the Germans begin the UN. Mongols get sanitation from the Germans who apparently feel everyone should have this technology.
