1752

The year was almost over, but for a few items to be rushed with government funds there was little to do.

Except plan.

The people at St. Leowind were recovering still – not to mention the buildings and the military stationed there. Those who were there at the St. Leowind massacre would forever be able to relate those events that occurred when the Chinese broke a treaty supposedly sealed with their word. Those who were not there or old enough to remember could very well live that day through the memories of those who would never forget.

The families of those on the undefended transport would also have long memories. Their sons and daughters had no means to defend against the Chinese war ship, though fight they did.

Those of the Inner Circle would never forget as well. It happened on their watch, and while there would be no way to bring back those who were lost, they at least could exact some measure of retribution.

Destroying their civilization in its entirety sounded good.

We know that still waters run deep, and the look of inactivity on behalf of the Fanatics may have seemed to others as inability to respond. Hence, pacts were made, out of jealousy or out of a false sense of power, to contain United Fanatica and bring them down. Little did they know. The Fanatics would break the still waters like a shark dispatching its prey.

1752:

Some rush building ensues thanks to a government surplus. A spy is generated out of St. Leowind, eager to be a part of the revenge. An elite group of troops are given skis and rifles and will also be involved as well.

Word reaches the capital:

The foolish English have broken the cease-fire that they themselves had requested. The nearby city of Ormuz had recently fallen into Fanatic hands, and it would seem that the English had long wanted this city for their own – though their diplomatic stance with the Mongols prevented it. No such situation with United Fanatica would stop them, however, as their military attacked without notice.

A dragoon regiment attacks and kills our lone riflemen defenders. The dragoons, however, are so decimated that they cannot move any further. A lesser group of knights then attack but are defeated by the ironclad stationed in the city. The last group of English dragoons apparently cannot get by the Mongol partisans and decide to retreat. The city remains in Fanatica’s hands.

1754:

The fruits of rushing:

St. Leowind trains a spy and begins to train engineers
Spice Haven builds a marketplace and begins freight
Becka-Becka builds a harbor and starts a coastal fortress
Kevholm builds a harbor and starts a coastal fortress
Dellville builds an oil freight and starts an aqueduct (supposed to be marketplace, but it is a size 8 city with good food production. I hope the governors are OK with this).
Dover creates a spy and begins a harbor. Plans are made to plant some trees nearby soon.
Cornmaster builds freight and starts some more
Viroconium builds a temple and starts a rifleman (for the new city)
Fort Pornstar builds freight and begins the starting work for a new wonder
Hippoville builds freight and starts more
Potopolia builds freight and starts some more
Unknown City replaces its rifle division and starts an aqueduct (again, supposed to be factory but it’s size 8 as well)

In response to the cowardly English attack, our ironclad in Ormuz does away with the straggling dragoons still alive. Cavalry heads to the city, and engineers will be dispatched to connect Ormuz to the other cities on the island. No further English units are in sight. A spy is sent to Ormuz and boards the transport there. It heads north to see what Brighton is all about.

Coal from Dukeshire is delivered to THDP and earns us 127 gold and a nice science boost. Oil follows for 44 gold. Salt is set up back to Dukeshire. The gems freight still set to go to Mpondo.

In the dead of night, a transport heads out of Joespaniel with an ironclad for support. Inside are 4 cavalry, the alpine troops, and the St. Leowind spy.

Word reaches the capital:

A Roman cannon is seen next to Dukeshire. The English are milling about but will not cause any more difficulty. A Chinese ironclad approaches the Joespaniel attack group.

While the Inner Circle practice their skeet shooting, attackers flying a red flag land and attack the city of Olympia. The Inner Circle is called to service, and with apparent glee and relish they help defend the walls of the city. Bets are wagered, and Dell collects the kitty for his skill in killing dopes on horseback. The leader of this attack has landed and is being guarded by some dragoons. They are near out engineer corps, so we may have to attack them preemptively. It would seem that these are merely hirelings for the cowardly Chinese, and the attack has done nothing more than to solidify the resolve of the Inner Circle.

1756:

Our riflemen kill the dragoons and the leader of the hirelings. Their heads are put upon spikes and put aboard the next ship heading to Chinese waters. The Inner Circle wonders if the Chinese will be around long enough for this gesture to do any good.

Our spy lands near the city of Brighton, and posing as a Mongol tennis player is allowed full run of the city. She sees two musket brigades and hears that this city also supports dragoons and two settler contingents. The city has a temple, but nothing other than that – though they are trying to build a marketplace. In speaking with some residents between matches, she is told that for 283 gold the city would overthrow the English dorky aristocracy and ally themselves with Fanatica. Our spy agrees for this price, and escapes back to Unknown City just before her final match against an up-and-coming Roman lefty. We get the city – now size 3 – along with 33 gold. City walls are started here.

A rifle brigade is rushed in Ormuz. Just in case.

Dukeshire cavalry defeats the Roman cannons before they can fire a single shot.

Many freight help to move the completion date of the UN closer.

This year will be forever known as the beginning of the end of the Chinese civilization. Operation “Leowind’s Revenge” is put into play. Our spy lands and checks out the city of Beijing. Inside, behind city walls, are FIVE musketeers. Egads! Not the place to be. Nanking shows to have 3 musketeers with no city walls. As our spy approaches, the Chinese ask for an audience and are refused. The Senate does not interfere!

The first stage of the attack comes in the form of our ironclad. The ship bombards the city, and a veteran group of musketeers returns fire. Alas, our ironclad is defeated – though it almost crushes the defenders.

Our troops begin landing and attacking from shore positions. The first group of cavalry slay a group of musketeers and is conveyed veteran status. The second group does the same exact thing. The third group finishes off the decimated veteran brigade, but is too wounded to continue -although veterans now as well. Our forth takes the city. We get the size 7 city of Nanking, 46 gold and a barracks for our armies. The transport ship then docks and the alpine troops fortify. The spy enters the city as well. Our foothold on the Chinese mainland is established, and the city starts a rifle division for extra defense.

Four groups of partisans then scramble about the city and one group asks for a cease-fire. General Ren agrees for now to be sure we can bring our veteran cavalry into the city and heal them. We shall see how long this lasts.

Word reaches the capital:

The Chinese partisans keep their word and begin to head toward Tsingtao and other areas.

The English come calling and ask for a cease-fire after we refuse to give them conscription. We agree for now as we wish to solidify our hold on the new cities.

Rome and the Chinese have governments overthrown. Rome calls on us:

Envoy: I think we should have a cease-fire
Spice: That would be awful boring.
Envoy: Look, we’ll give you one if you pay us 150 gold.
[The Inner Circle all look at one another in disbelief]
Spice: PULL!

The war with the Romans continues.

The animal skins on the throne room is exchanged for some nice tile.

1758:

Cornmaster builds freight and begins a library
Hippoville builds freight and starts a factory.

Duke’s brilliant minds at Newton University have shocked themselves silly and have come away with electricity. Streets are now lighted at night, and neon signs announcing the whereabouts of the houses of ill repute dot some of the larger cities. Requests from the Inner Circle call for electronics.

IC: Yeah, electronics
Duke: Didn’t we JUST discover that?
IC: No, that was electrICITY. We want elctrONICS.
Duke: Sigh. This is going to involve more shocking, isn’t it.
IC: Take one for the team, Dukie boy!

THDP builds freight, but with no commodity available it packs it with food. This addition should get us right about finished with the UN. THDP starts a bank with the idea of changing to sewer when sanitation is ours.

Roads connect Ormuz to the southern portion of the island, and plans are being made to get Brighton connected as well.

The tennis spy leaves Unknown City and heads north. It will do some exploring – perhaps find the mysterious Germans.

Dukeshire cavalry crushes Roman catapults near the city. Again. This time the cavalry earns a veteran rating. Engineers head to the swamps on Viroconium Island to carve out a place for a city. Others head to the hills near Dukeshire to continue a road toward Brundisium.

The spy from Nanking checks out Tsingtao. It now has six defenders thanks to the partisans involved. It is size 8 with 2 muskets and a transport inside. It also has a granary, temple, marketplace, library, harbor and supports a dragoon somewhere. The Chinese are now communist and therefore bribable. Tsingtao would cost 1027 gold to convert – too much for now.

Word reaches the capital:

The Romans have switched to Fundamentalism!! Nice to have the Statue of Liberty. We must watch for increased attacks soon. The Romans then sign the Lugdunum Pact with the English to contain the Fanatics.

The Germans give sanitation to the Romans and the Chinese as well.

The Zulus and Mongols have signed the Kazan Pact against us.

1760:

Our spy steals sanitation from Tsingtao and returns to Nanking unharmed. THDP changes to sewer system. Enough freight gets to Olympia to finish the UN.

Word reaches the capital:

Mongols are nearly finished with the UN and the Germans begin the UN. Mongols get sanitation from the Germans who apparently feel everyone should have this technology.

Part II

1762:

The UN is completed in Olympia – which then starts a factory. All nations are forced to enter Fanatica’s capital to be a part of this worldwide body. All other nations abandon their projects.

We check a few things.

Germans: Republic with 383 gold. They have no techs that we need but they are studying Genetic Engineering. They have only 6 cities with Hamburg as the capital (is Berlin usually the capital. That city wasn’t even on the list and was not in any other civ’s list. Perhaps it was razed.)

Zulus: Republic with 1200+ gold. They have 7 cities and are researching literacy. Tough to believe that in this day and age there are illiterate nations out there.

Gems are delivered to Mpondo for 156 gold and our science hits the red because of it.

An exploring spy out of Brighton sees the city of Oxford. Wonder how much THAT city costs. We have 1445 gold. Perhaps we should check that out. We call on the English and the cease fire escalates into all out peace. Hmm.. we’ll have to see if we can start a war up.

A rifle is rushed in Nanking and cavalry started. These will all be vets with the barracks here. All of our units are completely healed – just need the excuse to attack.

The walls in the throne room are upgraded.

Word reaches the capital:

No reports. Smiles all around as the new microbrew out of Marl Downs has arrived. A ribald game of “I Never” ensues and the Inner Circle discovers WAY too much about each other. It pretty much deteriorates into funnels that begin from the top of the city walls.

1764:

Engineer begins to mine the hills near Dukeshire.

Spycatcher builds a marketplace and starts a bank.

Duke reports from NU that electronics – different from electricity – has been discovered. Actually, he calls it “Damn Electronics”, and a great idea comes of it. The wonder being built in Fort Pornstar is designated as a huge dam. Duke wishes to see if we can forge an alloy of metals to produce stronger metals, sets about that task.

Rushing of items ensues.

Word reaches the capital:

Dragoons attack and kill the engineer mining near Dukeshire. Dang! I should have moved them. Our cavalry take revenge and move back to the city. Roman ships are seen passing Dukeshire – a frigate and an ironclad.

English troops are amassing near Brighton.

The Chinese have discovered conscription. Damn.

1766:

Cambridge trains an engineer and starts a temple
Thunder Falls builds a harbor and starts a temple
Becka-Becka builds a coastal fortress and starts freight
Kevholm builds a coastal fortress and starts freight
Marl Dows builds a harbor and starts a marketplace
Athenae builds a bank and starts freight for trade. It still needs 2 entertainers.
THDP builds a sewer system and begins a coastal fortress
Ormuz builds its second rifle group and starts engineers.

Contacting the English, we are allowed to ask them to leave our territory and they do.

In contacting all of the other civs (except the Chinese and the Romans who would not speak with us), it leads to peace with everyone. NOT just cease-fire, but peace.

The destroyer is healed fully in Ormuz and heads to Chinese waters for war support.

Our exploring spy finds the distant Mongol city of Shangtu in undiscovered lands. Cavalry rushed in Nanking, but Tsingtao is still too populated to attack and too expensive to buy.

Another spy spots Leeds near Oxford.

Word reaches the capital:

Nothing huge to report, but the Inner Circle is still feeling a bit woozy from the last kegger. Kev suggests they give the kegs to the Senate, and full-scale bedlam ensues. Pictures are taken, and it is hoped that these can help blackmail the Senate when the Inner Circle may need something.

1768:

Dukeshire builds a temple and starts a library.

Joespaniel trains engineers to be sent to the Chinese mainland. The first army corps. Joespaniel begins a factory (since it was size 7, I did not force the aqueduct. I see that it will be built after the factory which is fine).

Nanking trains veteran cavalry and starts city walls.

Word reaches the capital:

Dragoons attack Dukeshire out of nowhere. Our rifles crush the attack, but we’ll have to check this out.

The Chinese contact us, and peace is brought about. We can now ask them over and over to leave our territory.

1770:

Checking out Brundisium, we see how attacks came so easily to Dukeshire. Roman engineers have built a road out of the city and connected it to our own. In fact, they’ve managed to build a rail line out of Brundisium. The city is size 6 and would cost 728 to make it revolt. We let it stew for now, but must keep a vigil around Dukeshire.

Tsingtao is populated with 8 items now including a transport and a frigate. It is just too expensive to go after, but Leowind’s Revenge is not over yet.

St. Leowind trains engineers and starts a coastal fortress.

We ask the Chinese to remove their troops from the vicinity of Nanking and they do so.

A Roman Frigate attacks Dellville!! The riflemen defeat the ship, but coming up fast is a Roman ironclad. This ships also attacks, but our riflemen in the city are crack shots and defeat the iron beast as well.

The list of the most advanced nations:

1. United Fanactica
2. Chinese (perhaps not for long)
3. Mongols
4. Romans
5. Germans
6. English
7. Zulus

Word reaches the capital:

The Germans have discovered Genetic Engineering and are now working on a cure for cancer.

1772:

We discover steel and now ask Duke’s brainiacs to come up with a way to refine things. Could cruisers soon be in the waters waving Fanatica’s flag?

Our exploring spy now finds the VERY distant Mongol city of Kazan. Too bad the Mongols are a democracy.

As a change of pace – and based on a hunch – the spy out of Nanking checks out Beijing instead of Tsingtao. Inside the capital are a single rifle unit and two musket units. Granted, they are behind city walls, but we may never get a chance like this again. I’m guessing that the removed troops went to Tsingtao or that some units were disbanded for shields for the riflemen. There is no barracks here, so these are not vet defenders.

Operation Leowind’s revenge is ordered to continue, and a daring attack on Beijing is ordered.

The first veteran cavalry approaches the city. We call on the Chinese and ask them to leave our territory – although they do not have troops nearby. They let us know, but otherwise do nothing else. Rats.

Kev visits the Senate with some pictures in hand. A private discussion takes place under the cone of silence. When Kev returns to the Inner Sanctum – where the Inner Circle hangs out – here merely turns to Ren and states:

“You may attack the city, general.”

Our veteran cavalry attacks, and in a brilliant display defeats the rifle defenders – though wounded badly. The next vet attackers hit the field, and a musket brigade falls. The third vet attacker is able to defeat the last musket group in the capital. Our 4th veteran unit marches into Beijing without a fight. The capital is ours and the Chinese are unable to reestablish one in any other city.

We receive 179 gold and have a now size 10 city. Archaeologists are very excited to sift through the ruins of a great library that some say was one of the ancient wonders. Others have come across a site that may have been the setting for the legendary Hanging Gardens.

Shakespeare’s Theatre is open to all, and the populace remains happy even under Fanatic occupation.

NINE partisans take to the hills and a cease-fire is worked out. The 5th cavalry unit enters the city for additional defense. Fearing an immediate attack, our spy bribes a partisan for 100 gold, but it is unable to get to the city in time.

Word reaches the capital:

Roman government is overthrown.

The Chinese hold the cease-fire for about a nanosecond. They attack Beijing and manage to kill one of the cavalry units inside. No other attacks come for some reason.

The attack has caused the Mongols and the Germans to declare war on us.

1774:

Nanking completes city walls and begins a spy.

It has been announced that United Fanatica contains over 9,000,000 citizens.

Before any moves are made in this year, more discussions are needed. We hold.

From the UN

Romans = Republic with 2242 gold. 49 techs, 13 cities and researching electronics.

Zulus = Republic with 1221 gold. 33 techs, 7 cities, and researching communism

Germans = Republic with 424 gold. 47 techs, 6 cities and researching explosives

Chinese = Republic (just recent) with 394 gold. 49 techs, 3 cities, researching electricity

English = Republic with 1733 gold. 42 techs, 16 cities, and researching economics

Mongols = Democracy with 2121 gold. 48 techs, 15 cities, and researching conscription

United Fanatica = Democracy with 1557 gold. 57 techs, 29 cities and researching refining.

Other stuff: Our power is supreme and our reputation is atrocious. We have 9 entertainers in the land – 3 cities requiring 2 of them.

An interesting batch of turns indeed. Good work Kev! Soon the Chineese will be nothing but a legend for the parents of United Fanatica to scare their children with. :D

The Chinese must regret attacking us now. Interesting to note that the English seem to have the cheapest cities to bribe...
