Heathen Conversion not working?

In my current game I have adopted Heathen Conversion for the first time. However it does not appear to be working properly, or perhaps I'm not understanding how it should work.

I purchase a missionary in my city that has adopted the religion. I send the missionary towards a nearby barbarian camp. I finish the turn in a tile adjacent to a barbarian unit. As the AI turns are processed my missionary is captured by the barbarian unit. I've tried this with three different missionary units for the same results.

This doesn't seem to be how it should work, or am I missing something?

If it makes a difference I did not found the religion. The AI spread Islam to my cities and Islam is the religion that has Heathen Conversion as a belief.

Any ideas what's going on here?

I've never tried Heathen Conversion myself, but you should probably give the missionary an escort. :D

I've read a few other threads on the topic and most mention a big advantage of this belief is unescorted missionaries. I'll try it though.

That's odd, the only explanation could be that somehow only the founder gets the conversion benefit? I've never tried it with missionaries of a foreign faith, but whenever i use Heathen conversion as part of my own religion, it works exactly as advertised - missionaries need no escort, and convert any adjacent barbarian units - even if the barbarian moves adjacent during his turn. So my only theory in this case is that it doesn't work because it's not your religion.

Islam: convert or die (via public beheading or machine-gun execution).

It would appear the barbarians were cowed into the former.
