I have just finished playing a tall game as Monty and ended up with quite a large capital at the end of it all (slight understatement). I had originally intended to get a cultural victory using his UA, but when I realised I was on an island by myself I changed strategy and decided to grow Tenochtitlan as big as possible and see how this worked for a SV. Turns out quite well, as I made a couple of fairly big mistakes, like thinking I had built NC when I hadn't for 20 or so turns (!) and researching all relevant SV techs before I had even finished AP.
I did quite well on the early wonders front, managing to get GL, Temple of Artemis, HG and Petra (which was crucial due to the amount of desert at my spawn). The rest of my spawn that was not desert was plains. I also managed to get fertility rites (10% growth) and swords into plowshares (15% growth) from my religion. This was especially good as not one AI ever declared on me even though at one point my military was pitifully weak compared to everyone else. I filled out tradition as soon as I had got the free settler from liberty, and then went to rationalism and freedom, for the policy that allows specialists to consume half the normal food. I was not very fortunate with WLTKD, only getting it once or twice until I reached my wealthy endgame, where I could afford to spend 1000 gold to get an AI's last lux.
All in all, on King difficulty by the way, I won a science victory in 1924 AD, with the capital at 60 citizens (1 turn away from 61 and growing about every 6 turns). I think if I went up to 500 turns it could probably have reached at least 75 population. All tiles were worked, all specialist slots filled, and it still had around a dozen unemployed citizens!

Share your stories of mega-cities, and pics, if you have any!

EDIT: You may also notice there is not a single GS planted. This was not deliberate, I just didn't get any before the industrial era as I missed out on PT and LTOP.

:agree: Yea my cities usually go into the 40's, i don't think i ever had more then 50. thats pretty impressive. :hatsoff:

G&K I got into the 40s with the Aztecs

BNW I believe I got to 70 with Venice and internal trade routes!

My God......
My best was only about 37, never more than 40

I have been asked in pm about the game settings but since I am new I can't reply and will have to post here ;)

The map is small continents, large, arid, 4 billion years old, legendary start, on king.
The AI were Oda, Dido, Caesar, Darius, Sejong, Wu, Maria Theresa, Askia (got wiped out by Sejong and Wu) and Isabella (didn't even meet her before Oda wiped her out). Game length was standard.

:eek:How did you do that? I played emperor bnw using china always, i rarely get into 30+ pop. because i manually control the speciAlists and they eat lots of food. my strategy now to build those writer, artist.. guilds into separate cities to conserve food.

Here is another effort. City not as big but playing as Selassie so obviously didn't get Monty's amazing floating gardens. Still, the victory was much faster, which just goes to show how many mistakes I made as Monty. Growth was definitely beginning to slow down here, was down to a 40 - something food surplus whereas with Monty it was still into the 70s at a higher population. Could have got this victory 2 turns faster but thought I had built all 3 boosters when I had only built 2.

EDIT: Can see Gandhi there with 42 citizens in Delhi; not a bad effort by him either.

I usually play England and get London into the 40's at best, but it spends a lot of time producing and I'm going for a Dom victory.

I was playing Bismarck on Emperor and got lucky to catch several wonders. At the end it was a science victory with 61 citizens in around 1940. With a food surplus of more than 60 each turn if i recall correctly

Went all out this time, and I'm now satisfied enough that I won't need to try this again soon.

I'm really interested to see how big Venice could get with 20 food trade routes going to it with the Iron Curtain Tenet. I've been too lazy to try so far, but maybe one day I'll do it.

well...
Spoiler :

Got the 156th citizen this turn. Might be possible to break 160 even. I wasted 10ish turns conquering too far away and could not connect TR's 10 through 14 until I conquered closer to home. Conquering earlier would probably help some too. I build 3 great galleasses right after ToA, GL, HG, Petra, and colossus. Skipping the GL for boats might speed things up a bit too. Its a bit harder than I expected, trying to connect the 1st 14 TR's is all about capturing cities really early.
