Im playing on king (with the AI bonus tech removed) and Siam is somehow keeping pace with me in terms of tech even though i have been leading in beakers for quite a while. Im at 361 beakers, hes at 223...how is that possible?

How many cities do you each have? You might have an increased tech cost? At what stage in the game is it? Ruins? Great Library? Do you mean a mod that removed their reduced tech rate, or just no free techs as they have on higher difficulties

I have 3 cities, he has at least 5. It was the renaissance age, and i was the one who built the great library...

I mean no free techs, not any reduced tech rate.

He could also be making research agreements with civs he has a Declaration of Friendship with.

Maybe he's been stealing from your and/or other people too. It doesn't always tell you when you've been stolen from.

In addition, in BNW, the AI gets a 15% tech deduction compared to the human on all difficulty levels. (This is new to BNW, and it's because they added the 5% increased cost per city, but some of the low science flavor AIs won't even build libraries and so those are killing their science via city expansion.)
So, his 223 beakers / .85 is equivalent to what a human would at 262.35.

There's also a minor bonus for a tech that somebody else knows. (It's not so minor if the world congress adopts scholasticism.)

The AI also normally doesn't go for as deep a beeline as the human does and so could just be taking a bunch of cheap techs the human bypassed. (As soon as the human goes back and gets those techs, he'll rocket ahead)

The solution is focus even more on science. (Cash buy science buildings in high population low hammer production cities)

Hmm i do have a level 3 spy in my capital though...

Its really annoying how hes somehow keeping pace even though he has much more cities and a much lower science output....

As above, the AI tech bonus plus the tech discount when researching techs any known civ has already discovered. (It's small without a world resolution, large with it)
Just push science even harder and they'll fall behind, on the stated difficulty level you can end the game a full era ahead of all the AIs)

(Running all science specialist slots, More early academies in the city with NC, going Rationalism, later game tech bulbing)

I just find it really strange that with a massive beaker lead AIs can actually keep up with me on king. Its really infurirating because im doing everything right yet the AI is teching at the same speed and grabbing wonders before i can.

I really hate losing stuff like alhambra....

One potential reason could be that he actually isn't. The AI tends not to go for super expensive technologies, so alternatively if your literacy rates are similar, it could be that Siam have a lot of simple technologies while you're the one beelining expensive techs. You would get the expensive techs at the same rate Siam would get the cheaper techs, but literacy rate is just a measure of how many technologies you have, so if you get expensive techs, your literacy rate remains artificially low. Once you decide you need to get the cheaper technologies, your literacy rate will zoom up and start matching the amount of beakers you have. This happens a lot when I play, as I like beelining to techs like radio and satellites often while ignoring the other techs in the previous era.

Because the AI does start in the lead with free tech's and since they don't have to earn as many beakers to gain new tech's, they will start in the lead. However, because they are so poor at teching, you should be in the tech lead by turn 100. On Immortal, it might take until turn 150. If you are not doing that, you are not "doing everything right".

You just need to spend more time improving your skills, as everyone here has had to do at some point, unless you are only looking at early game beakers, then just ignore that.

I thought the AI tech reduction was 15%.

The AI isnt really bad at science early game, i find that they have no problems making libraries at least. Its only easy to outstrip them in science once you get later in the game where the AI is bad at making cities grow for science. Even then ive noticed that the AI can get 30+ pop cities if left alone.

Doesn't the Patronage Tree give a science boost from city state allies, and we all know how much Siam loves city states, so...

don't worry about Alhambra, one promotion for the AI in combat won't really hinder you.

If you want the cultural aspect of things, get Sistine Chapel for the awesomeness :D
