Well, I started my first game of FFH2 today. Wow. It totally rocks. However, I totally suck. Here’s a small story…
I selected Hemispheres, Random everything, Standard Size. I got the Amurites, and their Philo/Arc. Leader, whose name I don’t know at all (sad, huh?). I was looking at the position the map gave me. I moved up 1NW to get an Entropy Node, 2 Dyes, and a Corn in my fat cross. After scouting a bit, I found tons of good city sites, and my neighbors, the Malakim. I played through a few turns, getting techs and founding cities. Finally, my first battle:
The team of Warriors moved slowly through the Forests outside the barbarian city. A few Goblins patrolled outside the city walls, grunting to one another. Too many to attack successfully. This particular team escorted the first adventurers to Settle outside of capital walls, and guarded the early settlement. However, barbarian incursions had led them to battle thrice, twice against Goblins, once against a Hill Giant. And every time, they were triumphant, learning the art of Combat and the skills of Melee. This was to be their first test, however, and they were ready. Weakened after a long march from the settlement, it was decided that they should wait until they were healed to attack the city, a large one at that. A Pasture of Cows grazed close to them. A few of the men looked hungrily at the, until their leader grunted at them to stay in line. Suddenly, the Goblins noticed them. Two groups charged. The Warrior team raised their swords, and answered with a battle cry. An hour later, the Goblins and a few humans lay dead. The Amurite flag was raised triumphantly over the Pasture. The Warriors gazed at the barbarian city longingly, but knew they didn’t have the manpower to take it. The leader looked south, then exclaimed happily. The remaining Goblins guarding the entrance had left with a group of laborers to a marble deposit further east. Yelling a fierce cry, the Warrior group charged.
The city was theirs.
The barbs contributed a nice 5 pop city with Fish, Cows, and Marble nearby. After a while, I reached my next target. I founded the Runes of Kilmorph in a northern fishing village, my newest settlement. The Thane headed west to the Malakim capital, and spread Runes there as well. I quickly gained Pleased status with that Civ. A Great Sage appeared, giving me Ether (?) as a free tech. I built the Guild of Mages in all of my cities, then pumped out two Adepts. One got Blaze, the other Combat I. Now, these are my first and only spellcasters, ever, so I’m still not sure what to do with them. But I did learn something.
The young Adept slowly made his way through the forest. He knew somewhere to the east was another Adept and the Warriors who had captured the barbarian stronghold. It heartened him. When he looked up though, his knees almost gave way. On top of the mighty hill was a Hill Giant. It was said these things could destroy whole groups of Axemen! His teachers had gave him one skill, however, the ability to create a fire. He doubted it would help him, but it might signal the other Amurites to his area. He muttered a few words, and a Blaze quickly appeared, creating large plumes of smoke. He started to run east, hoping to find the others. Luckily, they were only a day’s journey away, and the quickly reconciled. A slightly smaller hill stood before them, one they hiked up to gaze at their target. It was massive, at least 13 feet tall, and the club it held could kill three men in one stroke. The two Adepts gulped, but the Warriors simply gained a steely gaze in their eyes. They were ready to kill.
Around noon the next day, a bloodcurdling shriek could be heard. One of the Adepts, the one who had cast the Blaze, pointed to the west: The Giant was coming. The Warriors were roused and armed, and charged the slower Giant. As they fought, a full two-thirds of the group were either thrown off the cliff, crushed by the Giant’s club, or stepped on. Finally, however, the Giant fell. The lead Warrior took the head as a trophy, the yellow teeth and dull eyes the color and feel of leather. As they began to walk north once more, something blocked their way- a full Forest Fire was Blazing through the path, forming a firestorm that stretched from the coastline to the hills.
Yep. I didn’t know what Blaze did, so the Forest got burned…
That’s my tale for now. I might update later, or just keep this as a memento of my first FFH2 experience. Thanks for reading!
Okay, now for the actual gameplay questions:
1) How do I construct a Node to take advantage of Mana? I know I have to research Elementalism, but is that it? Do my Workers take care of this?
2) How do spells and other magic stuff work? I know they’re like promotions to get them, and I also know World Spells affect (duh) the entire world, but aside from that…
3) How do you access your Civilization’s hero?
4) How does the Armageddon Counter go up? I know Hyborem, Ashen Veil spread, and city razing affects it, but aside from that, does it go up/down automatically?
5) How do Great People work? Are they the same as their Civ counterparts?
Thanks in advance for responses.
