games.on.net Interview with D. Shirk 4/11/13

No requirements for any of the policy tree's anymore?! That is the worst thing they could because everyone(Humans) will go rationalism and overcome the AI and then they will complain saying the AI is dumb or it's too easy.

"Dennis: Sure, well the policy tree is still in play. You don’t have any requirements to pull up trees like you used to before but we’ve added two new trees. We’ve added exploration and aesthetics. Aesthetics is a new tree that just serves culture player. But at the end of the tree, I don’t know if you remember Gods and Kings where you just have hypocrisy, order and freedom, they’re just like every other tree and choosing those ideologies they came into play just a little bit."

I'm not entirely sure the veracity of a comment which labels one of the G&K policies 'hypocrisy' can be relied upon.

Yeah, that article wasn't ready for publication. I'd guess the "requirements" regarding the policy trees refers to the Piety-Rationalism lockout which does make sense from a gameplay point of view (maybe nerf Rationalism a bit, but I never got the impression that Piety-Rationalism combo would be overpowered). It does make sense to take them out since the other exclusivity of the three late game trees is out as well...

After reading the whole thing, it sounds like the author interviewed Dennis with a voice to text device and didn't bother to review the transcript before dumping it all in the article.

This was my guess as well. I certainly hope it's true. Making Rationalism available from the Ancient Era would be ridiculous.

The question is: will policies still be unlockable with Culture as before, or will you need a certain Tech, or what?

Sounds good to me. It was annoying to have to stem my culture so I could save up for policies in later trees.

He was talking about cultural victory. I took it to mean "you don't have to build up trees like you used to before" (as in fill them in order to win).

They're just meaning the necessity to fill out 5 policy trees is gone !

Yeah I think this was what he was trying to say.

Due to all the errors, this article can't be considered trustworthy, but if there really is a new 'bazooka man' before (after?) the Anti-Tank, what might this mean for that entire line? Do Lancers now upgrade into Bazookas, or have they been rearranged?

So if you’re playing a peaceful civ, and I also happen to become the host, the resolutions that I have available to me are things like, say, a worldwide project where I’m going to say that we all need to make a “Worlds’ Fair”. And if that resolution passes, everybody in the world is going to be able to put production into the Worlds’ Fair. The top three players that the production to this are going to receive these scaled benefits from the Worlds’ Fair for the rest of the game. There’s also pejorative resolutions where I can decide to call for a trade embargo against another civilization that I don’t like. So nobody will be able to connect trade routes with them. I might be able to do a standing army tax against the militaristic players so they’re huge army suddenly becomes very expensive. I might be able to do cultural heritage sites. So any of my landmarks now produce more culture for everybody else in the game. So there’s a lot of different resolution possibilities.

The most fascinating part to me. Seems like a very interesting way to stop runaways - make their armies cripplingly expensive.

As much as the spelling was suspect at points (the 'hypocrisy' policy made me laugh :p), there did seem to be quite a bit of information in there. Nice to get some more details on how exactly trade and tourism will work, as well as the Great Works.

Also noticed that the X-Com Squad is pretty much confirmed for inclusion. :p Not that I really mind, he specifically mentioned that they'll be interested to see what kind of mods might make use of them, and I already know just how they're going to fit into my own near-future mod

This article also confirms that the X-Com unit is really in the game and wasn't just a joke for the Pax panel.

EDIT: Ninja'd by my slow 2-finger typing

Huh? Surely, as they are now competing Ideologies, Autocracy/Freedom/Order are still mutually exclusive.

You pick one when you hit Industrial, and opponents' tourism can make your people's unhappiness force you to switch.

Since the news site yanked the article, now I fear 2K is going to come and have the mods yank this thread.

Still no info on what tourism might be use for if not pursuing a CV.
My guess was that it unlocks ideology, but now info in this direction yet.

I think the Era requirements to unlock trees will stay the same, but having said that Rationalism wouldn't be that ridiculous in the ancient era anyway... At that stage I think growth is better than Rationalism's 15% to science, you don't have specialists yet, nor universities... So I think the only gain would be if you might open rationalism near the end of the Medieval era.

i just hope AI will be able to really handle and use World Congress voting system..
