AI's Navies better off w/out 'Escort' flag?

thanks for the answers .

I have turned the greek KI for this screenshot into a human player.

The Greeks lack both coal and oil, so their navy is stuck to pre-steampower units. And so they are massproducing the Pirate Frigate (Industrialization, 4/2/7) as it has two more movement points then the Frigate (4/2/5).

All pirate ships turn their prizes into transports of their tech level (Caravel, Galleon and Windjammer). And so the seas are littered with Windjammers waiting for pickup by an escort, as they are marked as "need Escort".

And no, they really have only 7 movement points, but the Greek have build the Naval Academy, wich gives them an additional movement point. ;)

So far I have observed, that the Greek meet single Windjammers with a Corvette or Torpedoboat and then escort them into a harbor.

But most of them are anchored were they have been created and wait for an escort (or a pirate of another nation ;) ).

I would say that the "need Escort" backfires here for the KI.

Second EDIT: I have now removed the "need Escort" flag from all transports, as they are been escorted anyway if they carry troops.

Only Aircraft Carriers have now the "need Escort" flag (the historical fate of the unfortunate HMS Glorious is a grim reminder, of what can happen to unescorted or inadequate escorted Carriers). I have also reduced the defence value of the carriers to 2 - 4 depending on type in order to avoid that they defend their escorts when attacked.

EDIT: And Korea is escorting a first generation Sampan (flavor unit for Galley) with an Armored Cruiser. :dubious:

8 Cities are building Battleships and Heavy Cruisers, but none is building a more advanced transport. The Sampan is really their one and only transport.

How many units can the Sampan carry compared to the other transports? And by any chance is only the Sampan checked as a transport for Korea?

The Sampan is a clone of the galley, can carry two units and can not cross ocean.

There were both River Steamboat and Liberty Ship as transports for the Koreans available. And even if someone would have cut their coal and oil the Windjammer would be back.

All three are marked as "Naval Transport" for the KI and in use by them.

I assume, that Wang Kon simply choose to build more warships than transports, despite the fact that his enemy (whoever that was - savegame is long gone) was not on the same continent.

Again I have turned the KI for this screenshot into players.

One of my recon planes discovered a chinese Aircraft Carrier. While this is a converted Superdreadnought and not a completly new constructed ship, this is the first time I have seen one (see page 1).

I checked and it really has one Biplane Squadron on board (Capacity is 5 squadrons).

What I do not know, if they only ferry this squadron or if they want to use it as carrier borne strike.

Also I am not sure if there is a correlation that they have loaded only their most obsolete and short range Biplane instead of their longer ranged Warhawks, Blenheims and Sturmoviki.
