After getting Civ3 Complete at Steam, I noticed I did not seem to have all my Conquest files. I re-installed Conquest from the cd, but there is still no .ini file. How do I set the game resolution to my usual high resolution setting without an .ini file? I have Windows 7.

I googled this, but i cant find it. You have to put a small phrase with number values at the end of the conquest Ini or Civ 3 Ini. I cant remember what was its name. Google Changing resolution

Affirmative, KeepRes=1 is what I would add to the bottom of the .ini file, but there is no .ini file in the Conquest folder. How do I put one there?

You've got to start a game first and then the file will be created.

I've done the same thing; load it all up and can't find that one single stinking .ini file.

And...

 :woohoo: :bounce:

Welcome to the Forum!

I have completed games, but still no .ini file. Actually, I don't see .ini files anywhere on my present computer. I'm wondering if Windows 7 even has ".ini" files. It might have some other file extension nomenclature for initialization files.

Thanks for the "welcome", but it really should be a "welcome back", as I have been here before as "Mesquite Thorn"; but I forgot my password, and the password reset didn't work. So, I just re-registered.

Open your notepad and write this:

Save as conquests.ini and put the file on the conquests folder.

It will change whenever you start a new game but at least you will have the conquests.ini and the keepres issue will be solved.

Thanks, Everkane. When I went to save your Notepad file into the Conquests folder, I got the dialog box advising me that there already existed a "conquests.ini" file. Thing is, that it is a Notepad file, but doesn't display the .ini extension. To the right, under "Type", it is identified as "configuration settings". Also, there is a 0.16 Kb difference in the file sizes.

So, what I did was just add KeepRes=1 to the file that was there, and it worked.

Because I got Civ3 Complete at Steam, my pathway was

C>Program Files(x86)>Steam>steamapps>common>Sid Meier's Civilization III Complete>Conquests>conquests (the final file being a Notepad file w/o the extension identified).

Using the links provided by CommandoBob above, I have also recaptured the Editor and CivAssist, so things are getting back to what I had before I got a new computer and got on Steam (and went through Civ4 and Civ5).

Don't know how common my experience with the different Civ iterations is, but I like some things about Civ 4 (barbarians and religion), some things about Civ 5 (graphics and city defense), and some things about G&K (units and new civ's), but I still think the Conquests package is the best thing Sid has done since South Mountain/Sharpsburg.

One of the windows folder options is 'Hide extensions for known file types' which is checked by default and it will hide the file extension for .ini files.

1792 is the highest resolution you can set via the video option. Seems I had trouble when my desktop is 19xx. Will have to try it again to see.

I tried this and now the game won't start at all. It just starts up steam and then the game never comes up.

I too have steam plus windows 8.1 pro wmc.

Is there something else I need for high resolution? I have a 1440p monitor (2560 x 1440).

I finally got this tested and it is working at 1920. I removed the video mode and used Keepres=1.

This is on 8.1 windows.

I guess I'm late to the party, but I have a video demonstrating editing the ini (including KeepRes=1 to maintain Windows' native resolution) after the first test after a clean install. This is on Win7 installed from Civ3 CDs, and I have installed to a custom location to avoid some issues between Civ3 and modern Windows.
