If I understand correctly, doesn't spyware, adware, porn, trial software, etc programs store info in one's registry - causing pop-ups & what not even after you thought you deleted the program?

If so, how does one go about cleaning that up? (I use Win98)

Thx

cache stores only internet pages and cookies- information about you and your computer.

Internet explorer - tools -internet options, in the temporary internet files section hit delete files - this will clear the cache (you can delete cookies as well at the same time)

Useful information, thanks, but then where do programs hide critical information on your computer & how does one remove this?

I'm sorry, I believe I am thinking of the registry. Is there a way to access that so as to completely remove fragments of old programs?

Depends on the operating system and the program. Generally though, don't mess with the registry if you aren't sure about what you are doing.

In windows, typing "regedit" in run will get you into the register editor. But as Nihilistic said, don't do anything without knowing what it is you're doing.

If you completely want to remove fragments of old programs, I suggest reformatting the computer instead...

If you're concerned about your registry entries, go to Snapfiles.com and download three freeware programs.

1) Spybot S&D
2) Adaware
3) Hijackthis.

Run Spybot and Adaware. Make sure you read the information that comes with them. Adaware has a custom scan that does a better job than the standard scan. Run both twice, restarting the computer each time to clear memory. (They each have a different approach to finding the nasties.)

Run Hijackthis and save the log. Go to Spywareinfo.com and check out the forums.

There are a number of posters there who can review the log and tell you what to do. Do not fiddle with the registry unless you know exactly what you are doing. These folks can help.

Something else to remember:

Whenever you are trying to remove viruses or spyware from XP or ME you must disable the System Restore function (directions and explanation here).

Finally, whenever you do a cache cleaning, clear your browser history, empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. This garbage sits in memory sometimes.

Another good source for dealing with spyware and adware is Merijn.org. There is a great deal of information available there as well as links to some very helpful sites.

It may seem like a long, involved process, but if you want to rid yourself of this junk, you need to take the time so you do it correctly.
