The site has been updated, and it's a pretty significant one. We've got a new game update that deals with resources and we have a "slideshow" that walks you through how resources work.

We've also got a new edition of ask the Civ team.

And oh, by the way, we have some official screenshots for you as well.

Have a good weekend,

Well it looks as if resources are plentiful so it would be unlikely to have a monopoly, except with Uranium I would imagine. But I hope there isn't a resource seed and that it will be possible to place them and if not, atleast the ability to set resources on low for a more diplomatic game.

Excellent! I love the way that culture expands your borders. And you can build colonies, which are really cool cause they let you harvest resoures outside of your borders. I do wonder why the iron is in the plains instead of mountains...

Overall I am VERY pleased.

Thanks for the update, Dan!

The new resource model is cool! I know I will be doing lots of road pillaging in Civ3...

First, thanks for the slideshow. Fun reading..

Yeah the borders are very interesting. I hope there are some logical limits though between adjacent civs ... it could be annoying to have borders shifting back and forth every time someone builds a library.

Cheers for allowing access to resources outside the city square.

Graphics looking much better. A few minor nitpicks - the city name is tough to read, and somehow seeing the defending unit standing in the middle of the city looks a bit goofy to me. But perhaps such things can be toggled on/off.

In general, great!

Everything looks great, can't wait to play the game and see if it works great.
Not trying to say much until I can actually get the game and tinker with it, as anything can change up till the day it ships and is sold to me, even the size of the city name.

Impressive. The graphics and city view are IMO, irrelevant. The improvements in terms of resources are certainly well done, including some not previously mentioned things that I had hoped would be included in civ 3. The cultural ideas seem to be solid too. Keep it up!

The Resource system and its integration with other aspects of the game like culture have a logic that has been missing in Civ games so far.
This has more than whet my appetite - I'm ravenous! I'm going to have difficulty waiting for the release of Civ3 - hang on, anything is on the bargaining table now - Dan, I'll trade you, hummm, my house, my car for a copy of Civ3. What? Not enough? Wellll, I love my wife but..........

It just hurts to talk about CIV3, I start looking at the Civ3 Site and dreaming of what it would be like to play it for hours and hours. And then I have to face the fresh reality that it's JUST NOT OUT YET.
Yes, I am a civ addict and well, it's just not right to tease an addict.

The slideshow emphasizes road connection between special resources and the capitol city very often. Does that mean special resources cannot be harvested if they are not linked to the capitol city? What if you've lost your capitol city, or the special resource is on different continent or island than the capitol city?

Or do you just need to have road connection between special resource and ANY city to harvest it? (this makes more sense)

Note that the silk is now within our borders, which means we can harvest it for use in our cities. To do this, however, we need to build a road that connects it to our capitol city
..........
By building a road to this luxury and connecting the road to our capitol city, we can now trade this good.
..........
Workers now have the ability to build colonies, which, when connected to your capitol by road, allow you to harvest a given resource.
...........
As long as we have a road connecting the iron to our capitol, we will have use of this iron.

Wow, good point Tf, I didn't notice until you pointed that out. I don't think that it means that though, although that would make the game more interesting...

From what I read, it seemed to say that if cities are not connected to each other somehow, then they cannot share resources. What this means is that if you have your main continent and your capitol is there with other resources and cities connected to it, they all benefit.

However, over on your other continent, where your newer cities are and these cities are all connected to each other, but not with your capitol and it's cities. So you have these networks, which may or may not all be connected. Get it?

Got it, but I don't get how you got it.
From what I read, it seemed to say that if cities are not connected to each other somehow, then they cannot share resources.
I only got that if your city was connected to the resource then it will get no benefit. They didn't go into details about multiple cities and how they use resources. They will probably allow any city to use a resource as long as you have one city producing it, or they might require you to build trade routes....wow, that would be awesome, I want a lot of micromanaging!!!

Another observation:

In the main map screenshots, you can see a unit standing in the center of the city, both in your own cities and enemy cities.

I guess they are there to show that the city has defenders and don't expose the type of units inside the city...

Does that mean special resources cannot be harvested if they are not linked to the capitol city?

Thunderfall, what it said is that resources can't be HARVESTED unless 2 things happen.
1)the resource has to be connected by a road to a city, Now this is where I can't be sure if we should take them literally or not because it said capitol but it might have meant that because Rome was the capitol, but it may be that you just have to have to have a road between the resource and the city harvesting it.
2)the resource has to be either within the city border or you have to have built a colony there.

In order for resources to be SHARED BETWEEN YOUR OWN CITIES those cities have to be connected by a road OR they can be 2 coastal cities with seaports OR they can both have airports.

Finally, and this is where having them linked to your capitol comes into effect for sure, IN ORDER TO TRADE RESOURCES WITH ANOTHER CIV those resources have to be linked to your capitol by road, airport, or seaport.

With all the roads you will have to build anyhow it will be easy to connect all your cities together anyhow so it sshouldn't be a problem if you do have to have it linked to the capito to harvest it.

This would not be true however if your enemy comes along and starts pillaging your roads. So, you gotta guard those borders!

I can see that it will be difficult for guys that are used to just building up an army and going out and conquering without having to worry much about domestic issues. I think they will come to realize that Civilization III is going to be a game where the culture and trade are closely linked to having a succesful crusade.

Why can't a colony become a city in time?... that's what usually happens in our world. (Or don't I understand the culture motif of the game at all?)
