NESFed: Aurora

This is Aurora. A 4x Space Game that includes some difficulty when installing, and a difficult UI. I’m not trying to be too discouraging, just honest. I’ve played it off and on at times, though not long enough to really know what I’m doing. I intend to play through it for a while for your viewing.

Below is the setup screen:

The empire shall be known as the Never-Ending Space Federation or NESFed for short. The theme is fantasy, which will mostly just determine default names of ship classes and military ranks. The Commander theme is United States, which determines default officer names. I will adjust that slightly once started to get a greater variety.

I chose a Conventional start, which means at the beginning, the most we will be able to do is colonize and mine the Solar System. Our first research goal will be the Trans-Newtonian tech which opens most of the other techs we will need to travel the stars and defend ourselves against the greater threats to be encountered.

The only reason I’m not starting as a Trans-Newtonian Empire is it increases the techs we start with, and when it comes to designing things, I’m not always certain what is best.

I’ve increased the starting population to 750 million instead of the default 500. This will increase our starting research and industrial capacity slightly. I could set it higher, to billions, but my understanding is that advancements move too quickly at that point. I also changed the starting year to whatever mashing the keypad gave me.

I’ll leave the history from 2014 to 6548 including the population drop from 7+ billion to 750 million and the unifying of the global population under one government up for grabs.

Welcome to NESFed!

Looking at the system view, we can see the Kuiper Belt and a few comets heading to and away from the Sun. A note about the system view, objects are shown as circles in their current location. Comets and spacecraft will have lines behind them indicating the path of travel from which they came.

As we zoom in, we see Halley’s Comet just inside Neptune’s orbit. The many objects within the asteroid belt blocks our view of the inner Solar System. The white numbered circles are potential jump points that we will investigate in the future.

Spoiler :

Finally, a full interface screenshot. I’ve zoomed in enough to see the inner Solar System. Spoilered to not completely make reading the thread a pain.

Looking at the Economy windows, most of my work force is in construction. That is about all we really need, though I need to check and see if mining gets listed separately like I think it does. In any case, I went ahead and ordered demand for mines and automatic mines. There are no fuel refineries, so I put in a demand for those. I also go ahead and request additional research labs and ordnance factories. All that was under the Civilian/Ind Status tab.

I move on to the Industry tab to see what I can actually build, and find limited options.

I set orders up for some of each of my four options. The military academy will increase the number of officers I get each year, the infrastructure will be used on non-Earth worlds to support population, the financial center will increase the economy which will help the morale of the population and, I think, increase my buying potential through taxes, and finally, maintenance factories to produce supplies ships will use to repair themselves while away from home.

Some of the lack of options are a bit silly to me, since I already have some built or they seem like something I should have access to already, such as construction factories, mines, fuel refineries, missile factories....

I also order construction of more ICBM missiles, but with no ordnance factories, the order will just sit there for now. I have no fighters that I can build at the moment, and no fighter factories to build them with. So I do nothing with it for now.

Finally, I move to the Research tab and set up my research projects. I get Trans-Newtonian Technology started because as I mentioned before, most of my other tech requires this. Additionally, I keep one lab free to research an engine I designed for use in ships. Once it is designed, I may be able to start production of a cargo craft to ship infrastructure around to prepare for colonization.

Viewer Involvement!

I have 29 Naval Officers, 18 Ground Force Officers, 1 Civilian Administrator, and 4 Scientists. They all come pre-named, but I can rename them. If you’re interested, I can rename people and keep you up to date on their activities.

In addition, I can change rank names, ship names, ship class names, shipyard names, and more. If you want something named, let me know.

Name a scientist after me please. A biologist if it makes any difference.

The "fields" are: Biology/Genetics, Construction/Production, Defensive Systems, Energy Weapons, Logistics/Ground Combat, Missiles/Kinetic Weapons, Power/Propulsion, and Sensors/Fire Control.

That said, the scientists I started with are 1 Construction/Production, 1 Power/Propulsion, and 2 Defensive Systems.

Scientists can research in any field, though they get bonuses to their area of focus.

Unless you object, I'll just name one of the available scientists currently doing research after you. A biologist might spawn in a day, or in a century.

I want to be a Civilian Administrator.

Will do. Most likely, since there is only one Civil Admin, you will become Governor of Earth.

If it is available, I would like to be named after a scientist as well. An Engineer (Construction/ Production) would be my preference.

Also, that looks like an incredibly complicated game in the beginning. Good luck! :p

People!

Here we have Immaculate the scientist, specializing in Construction and Production. Currently researching Trans-Newtonian Technology for us.

With no challengers, here we have Everblack, a shoe-in for Governor of Earth.

And finally, Lord Herobrine, our current Power and Propulsion specialist who is currently researching the Crash Industries E1/5 Conventional Engine.

Will do. I'll probably make sure it is someone young. The ground war is mostly inactive until you run across aliens which isn't until we start traveling to new stars.

However, should you retire before seeing action, I will reincarnate you as needed.

I do not know this game, how long it takes on average for interstellar travel?

We have to research Gravitational Survey Sensors and build a Survey Ship to go to those white numbered circles on the 2nd map on the OP. The ship will survey until it finds a point that connects to another star system.

Once a Jump Point is found, the best option is to have a ship with a jump drive make the trip. The actual time to jump isn't that long, though to return requires the jump drive to come back online and warm/spin up.

I figure we will have ships making jumps within 10ish years. Though as long as we can find the materials we need in the Solar System, I won't go too crazy looking for aliens until I feel like we've teched up more.

Naval Officer Von Igglestein is ready for service!

Naval officer sounds about right.

I'd also like to be a naval officer!

Will provide the details once I get home.

I've got to watch and see how it is handling officers in command of missile silos, due to apparently the game didn't put life support on them and they are in space for some reason. All the soldiers on the missile silos are dead or dying. I need to find out if the officers are going to die also or not.

Scientist SouthernKing here! Power/Propulsion out of the ones you have available.

Is Defense okay? I already placed Lord Herobrine as the Power/Propulsion researcher.

Honestly, rushing into exploration isn't necessary. The travel times to other solar systems are so extreme that, barring the discovery of alien ruins, we're not going to get enough value for them.

Our priority should be expanding our industrial and scientific base on Earth while developing colonies and mining posts in our solar system until those are no longer economically viable.

That said, I want to be a spaceman. Dibs on the first interstellar vessel.

He's right. Let's not hurry.

Being a Naval Officer is interesting? If this position is more active, so I'll change. But if it's essentially the same thing, leave it as it is.
