General Annoyances List

There was a map type, "toroidal" in cIV that let you do this.

Yes, and it worked nicely from a display perspective. Shame that it greatly increased maintenance due to some questionable coding, but useful for trolling the occasional turncast game without people realizing it :mischief:.

(In Civ IV, maintenance calculated one of its components based on distance from capital. However, this was a function of the maximum possible distance. On a flat map, the maximum possible distance on a map was from one corner to the opposite corner. On a round one, it was less, and on toroidal even less than that. With a shorter max distance, the proportion of a typical city distance to that smaller number is great, leading to more maintenance).

1- Should tell you when world fair/ international games / space station starts. I tend to not pay attention to the 10 mostly useless notifications per turn so when the congress passes one of these, it's buried and you only see it when the "world fair update" notification shows up. Just bugs me, I constantly miss the first 2-3 turns of it.

2- Unhappiness from ideological pressure is game-breaking. On deity when you rush Radio, sometimes the AI gives you -35 happiness from pressure 20 turns down the line. That's just nonsensical amounts, completely out of whack with everything else in the game. When you go for super fast science, you can have 10 luxuries, all pagodas, all zoos, half unhappiness from specialists and grand colliseum AND STILL be in negative happiness lol. |
It's not that much of a problem with other strategies, but just generally annoying for science.

3- Sight should be 2 tiles. You can constantly move into the range of a barbarian or enemy unit, unable to move back, because you can't see. I just find it tedious to have to be overly cautious constantly when moving/fighting. I know there's even a workaround where you can try to move a guy into the fog of war and a red circle appears if there's a unit there. Just give me 2 tile sight already, skip this nonsense.

4- Zone of Control is weird. I know you get used to it but it produces all sorts of little quirks for where units can and can't move around other units and cities.

5- Show me the range of a city's bombardment. Would just be visually nice to have.

6- Have the AI stop offering a deal you rejected. YOU CAN'T HAVE OPEN BORDERS GOD DAMN IT STOP ASKING EVERY TURN.

Sight is two tiles, but not in rough terrain and not for certain units

You just voted for it the turn before. Hit next turn, then switch over your production. It can literally be the last action of one turn and the first action of the next.

3- Sight should be 2 tiles.

It is.

5- Show me the range of a city's bombardment. Would just be visually nice to have.

It's 2 tiles. Always.

Meant 3, sorry. Basically scouting +1.
I just find it a nuisance when doing wars or walking around with civilian units. It's easy enough to plan around, but just tedious and it adds nothing but annoyance to the game for me.
I know it'd make the game easier as the AI probably can't use this, but I just find it an annoying choice for the gameplay. I'm sick of all these barbarian units and camps appearing right next to mine for instance. Super annoying and random, sometimes delaying a settler by like 10 turns just because you couldn't see where they spawned. So many turns.

Also the AI could clearly benefit from this lol. Half the barbarian camps have a worker inside them. Dumb AI can't see barbarians coming either apparently.

There's a way to check with a civilian whether there is any barb or even camps inside fog of war, if you have already explored that area. If you choose the move command, it will highlight red if there is something there, even if it's in the fog of war.

'6- Have the AI stop offering a deal you rejected. YOU CAN'T HAVE OPEN BORDERS GOD DAMN IT STOP ASKING EVERY TURN.'

I definitely agree with this point, it's so annoying when the AI keeps asking for the same thing over and over again

^^It's definitely annoying!

Also--when the AI offers a trade, you accept, and then he says it's not good enough.

The next turn the AI does it again.

And then again.

And again.

At that point, I refuse to deal with the AI and just dismiss any offer from him.

The worse is when you are at war and trying to figure out your attack (or defense) and the AIs start spamming you with those idiotic requests.

i kind of like that ideological pressure prevents players from necessarily going their preferred route late game. especially on deity where it's hard to avoid. but it can certainly get very annoying so i don't blame people for griping about it

denounce the AI. Then they stop asking for open borders ;)

But in all seriousness yes, I wish there was a 5-turn cooldown where the AI couldn't repeat the same request. It would make the game smoother. 5 turns is so much better then every turn. :D

Minor annoyance: Being asked to DOW during a DOF. I guess that is something EUI helps address? All this time, why has the default UI not incorporated some features from EUI?

Minor annoyance: No battle stats at end. I would like to know how many units I killed and my win:loss ratio. Previous civ games had that!

With a shorter max distance, the proportion of a typical city distance to that smaller number is great, leading to more maintenance.
Wow, I never picked up on that, and torus was my favorite map! I have to wonder if that was part of my difficulty with IV...

1. Rude greetings when you first meet some civs (e.g. Catherine and her 'lesser nations' remark).
2. City governors: irw I would have most of them shot for their poor tile choices etc.
3. Hearing "Mr Gorbachev..." when you enter modern era - drastically wrong time, always makes my teeth grind! On a related note, I'm getting sick of picking up starving dogs...
4. Workers taking a breather after chopping down a forest or taking an extra go to produce a road segment - too much like reality!
5. GGs spawning as far from the battlefield as possible.
6. CS gifted units always placed in as awkward a tile as possible (e.g. opposite side of a river from your roads)
7. Everyone's favourite: CS unit blocking workers and other non-military units whenever possible - even if they're supposedly allies.
8. Luxes for WLTK - in a recent game my cities all wanted crab, even though no-one had ever seen a crab until I finally found somewhere when I unlocked satellites - next to a one-tile ice island! I mean, how do they know they want it if no-one in the world has ever had it?!
9. AI that won't accede to a demand even when it's obvious you can easily exterminate them and they have plenty; and their city with it is next to your army.
10. ...and finally: you declare war, the AI war music starts, you do some stuff, you hit 'next turn' ...and somebody will always want to talk to you (and thereby cut off the war music) - it's enough to make you declare war!

My gripes for the day - what are your top 10?

*Slips note to Catherine: This dissenter named Walter R is complaining about your rudeness instead of worshiping you as a sycophant. Off with his head? Or straight to gulags? Y/N. -Ericridge*

Moderator Action: Two "Annoyance" threads merged

they do it because they were coded to do it. there are no humans behind the screen besides you. yes, it is a poor idea. it drags them down. a lot of mods fix this issue by making later expansion more profitable, try them out.

Even so, the AI should probably be hard coded not to build settlers, say, by the modern era.

I'm still ticked off by this religious crap. Had a great game as Babylon (and I always seem to get screwed when playing as them).

Venice, Arabia, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Spain carpet-bombed me with GPs and missionaries and it was around turn 100.

Give me a break.

Agreed, religion being spread by other civs really irritates me. In my current game I am being Venice and it's lucky I had a GP active because my one and only city got converted to another religion and I had to convert it back. I then told the offending Civ to back off but they said no. At the time, they had one GP and three Missionairies in my land so I declared war and captured them all. It's quite amazing how a civ on another continent can send so many religious units halfway across the World and spam their religion.

Much like real life, religion is one of the top reasons why I will declare war - I will not have my flying spaghetti monster beliefs challenged DAMNIT!!

Haha -45 from public opinion. This is just way out of whack, seriously.

They should at least show you where this unhappiness is coming from. Apparently you can get some from trade routes and open borders? Then it should just say in the trading screen that if you accept open borders, you'll get -10 happiness as a surprise.

Seriously happiness is a decent game mechanic, but the ideology pressure thing is just... dumb. Either it's crushing ( when you go science / diplomacy ) or it's a non-factor ( when you go domination / culture ).
Just not very balanced or explained in the game in my opinion.
