Hello everyone, as my title says I am quite the noob in Civ and am playing Civ V. I was wondering what everyone suggests as far as custom game settings, nations, strategy, etc. Although I am a noob I have sunk many hours into the game over the past few days. Any help is appreciated :king:

Hello and welcome.. You can use the easier difficulties to get used to civilization like settler or chieftain if you want to get started. Take it easy at first and eventually you get better for the higher difficulties.

Don't use time victories either so you learn effective strategies for the other victory conditions, and most people who play don't use time victory anyways.

I came to the Civ series very late and only played toward the end of IV.

What worked for me to learn everything early on was twofold.

Reading some basic things either in game or on here I.E. learn what specialists actually do, learn what the city UI all means (designating which tiles to work etc) and understand most of the base mechanics i.e. beakers, hammers etc.

I also strictly played on Pangaea style maps to begin with. Trying to focus on ocean and land at the same time can feel overwhelming so if you essentially eliminate one of those things, it makes it a bit easier.

You could also watch some Let's Plays on YouTube and learn from some of the guys on there

May I suggest playing against AI's you picked instead of random, this way you know what to expect. Also I recommend playing against Ghandi, Siam or any other peacefull players as they won't be to competetive, avoid zulu at al cost.

I'm going to have to disagree with Siam not being competitive. When they show up in my games, they are always a threat.

Welcome! Like others have suggested, looking around the forum and watching Let's Plays can help you get a feel for the basics. Which civs have you played as? Did you enjoy any of them more than the others?

Welcome Jack!
I suggest it is best to pick a civ and a map type that favours it, a modest difficulty (say Warlord) and try things out - playing random settings makes it tougher to learn. Digest the good advice from earlier replies and have fun.
