Rome Always a Runaway?

He used to dominate in my games.

Then I saw him getting eviscerated by Korea and Japan in different games. Most common for me is Hiawatha, Napoleon... Harald Bluetooth, Alex and sometimes that Selassie gui. Also tend to get oddball runaways like Autocracy Polynesia... actually this one was just recently, and he had tons of super powerful units that were insanely tough to grind down.

I can honestly say I've never seen Harold Bluethooth run away. If anything, he's that wimp that lets Napoleon/Augustus become huge.

There are many reasons (imo) why Hiawatha is the most dangerous AI in the game.

1. His expansive strategy is the highest among all AIs.
2. His starting bias and special ability makes him vastly superior on defense against any other civs; Mohawks are broken.
3. He plays conservatively and only dow civs he is vastly ahead off.
4. He is very inclined to go for diplomatic and science victory, unlike Genghis and Attila.

I've never seen Atilla or Genghis runaway, even on Great Plains.

Napoleon, Bismark, and Alex are guaranteed runaways in my games

The only time I saw Atilla do well past the very early game was when he started next to Genghis.... who had decided to do a OCC for some reason. Go figure.

Yes, if Attila is beside me, he is doomed to fail (because Rams do nothing on defense). Against other AIs, however, he has a huge edge.

Yes...the Rams seem to be much more effective in human hands...I've enjoyed a few games as Attila...

But I suppose the same can be said about much of what the AI does with its units.... If I play as the Mongols I love the Keshiks and only in the direst of circumstances do I lose one...well, when they are at their peak efficiency, but I regularly see the AI Mongol leaving his Keshiks sitting around to be picked off by Pikes and range units... I mean, hey, the whole point of the Keshiks is you can do damage, then run away and come back the next turn...except in the tighest of situations you don't have to take any hits.... I suppose the logistics of co-ordinating the movements of, say, five or six Keshik units is beyond the feeble powers of the AI "brain"...

Well now you have

Spoiler :

usually in my games if he isn't starting alone, its with smashing the hell out of both England and Songhay... or Netherlands and the Ottomans. Which is funny, because the Netherlanders are also prone to become runaways themselves (one game where they practically shared a continent with a Rome who was eviscerating a Spain with Tercios and Conquistadors... with nothing more than Legions and Ballistae)

Heh, well I'll be damned. I'd rather he would runaway in my games instead of Greece.

Looks like Germany and France are both runaways in my current game, and as it's a Pangaea-type map they look to be on a crash course...

Napoleon has both conquered and city-spammed his way across the continent (it's a Huge map). He's now generating about twice as much culture as me thanks to Ancien Regime, and I'm playing a culture-turtle Ethiopia. Bismarck assembled a massive army in the early game from barbarians (I was able to see his army with my scouts) and plowed several neighbors under. They aren't hostile yet, but I'm sure they will be. In fact, I might instigate it... I'm looking forward to seeing who wins.

Rome is a strong civ for sure, but not really the best IME.

Hiawatha and Bismark i absolutely hate, as they settle cities constantly EVERYWHERE IN EVERY SINGLE PLACE THEY CAN FIT ONE. This makes them extremely tough for me to compete with at harder difficulties.

Nappy is similar usually, though occasionally i see him sit on a couple cities instead.

Genghis usually takes out a CS or two and then get dogpiled as everyone hates him, and proceeds to wither away.
Attila is similar though he does seem to do better than Genghis.

I'll agree with most of the posters...
Hiawatha and Bismark.. It's frustrating to meet them early game, I know i'll have to edit my gameplan to make sure I don't allow them to expand too much, or by the end-game I can take 6 or more of their cities and not even make a dent in their plans... alexander is another one who tends to run away early if left unchecked...
Hiawatha in particular though.. the worst is when he's on another continent... by that time the caravels are sent off, you'll realize half of the world belongs to him...

Hiawatha and Napoleon always always always try to runaway. Playing a game as the Mayans, continent, with Napoleon to my south and Hiawatha on the other end of the continent. Nappy backstabs me and declares war, while Hiawatha conquers Attila and RammyK.

I easily wiped out Nappy, and now I'm getting ready to crush Hiawatha (with nukes).

Lol, Danish Abattoir (re: pic above).

Persia and the Iroquois are usually the most prone to run away in my experience while Rome, Greece, and Korea consistently do well. Every once in awhile the Netherlands do well, but are usually not running away.

Germany usually has the misfortune of starting close to me, so he can't get to runaway point. France is very hit-or-miss in my games. I play on Continents mostly and I've seen Paris in the control of many other Civs when I finally venture over there.

Siam / Iroquois are usually the runaway civ in my games

+1

Hiawatha Its just annoying, ALWAYS expanding and ready to DOW you. About Siam, its not him what i fear, its all the CS that he use to have, in my current game i spend tons of gold and spies to try to control nearby CS, but was for nothing, he finally DOW me with all his CS

Luckily i had "self defense" nuclear weapons.:D

T181 - American caravel greets Korean gatling guns and Hwachas in the port city of Pyongyang

Spoiler :

T230 - Sejong the Great enters the Atomic Era

Spoiler :

T240 - Cityspamming Japan of Eurup gets overrun by hordes Greater Joseon's WWII Infantry, artilleries and bombers (and probably tanks too)

Spoiler :

T245 - Greater Joseon is now in the Information Era, having completed Apollo a turn ago

Spoiler :

Well that sums it up. Time to dig in for the long haul and start conquering a huge empire before moving unto Eurasia

also Smallfish's Runaway Theory #44 - if Sejong starts off next to Askia or Oda Nobunaga and is given the room to expand more than 8 cities, both Songhay or Nippon will eventually get absorbed into Greater Korea

Prior to gods and kings Rome was usually conquered before I met him. Now it seems he has 20 plus cities and is quite the warmonger despite him denouncing every one for the same thing.

I've never seen an AI Attila become a runaway, presumably because the other AI's will have too many units for the Battering Rams to have to negotiate with the limited help of their escorts.

Rome is a runaway only in around 20% of games I see him in. Often, Hiawatha and Greece are worse (Greece has Hoplites quickly and has a huge bias toward wanting to fight anyone in their way).

Germany often fails in games I play. On Marathon, Germany can run away with it sometimes, but on all the Standard pace games I play (which is most games for me), Germany doesn't really put together any sort of overwhelming military force like one would assume they could via their UA.

Here you go:

Now you've seen at least one. I've seen him running away quite often, actually. Maybe it's just me.

I see Japan here, too. Japan, for all the complaining about them that I see, as an AI at least often tends to be fairly successful, and it looks like they are doing alright here.

I don't know why I don't see more of Attila as a runaway, actually. The pastures bonus for production is quite nice when I myself play as Attila. My only guess is that he often fails early rushes against other AIs, again presumably because the Battering Rams aren't capable of attacking anything but cities, and many AI civs will have enough units to block the rams or to outright destroy the rams.
