Is there an easy way to calculate city distance?

I'm getting tired of counting tiles, thinking that a city is within 15 tiles, building a caravansary...only to be frustrated!

I'd say counting tiles is the easiest way.

Problem is when a city is not directly NSE or W of you what tiles do you count? There should be a calculator or something because it's maddening.

You count the shortest way to the city. But I believe that roads have also an impact so it is not easy by counting tiles anyway. A tool for measuring would come in handy, not only for trade routes but also for religion pressure and possibly for settling cities (if one is lazy).
