Yeah, it's looking like the decision will come remarkably soon. According to the talking heads a few nights back, schools would be given advance notice to close if they were in session when the grand jury returns with its decision, and security measures would be taken. I think the Governor's statement now indicates this is imminent.

WHEREAS, I haven't been following this story over the last couple weeks.

WHEREAS, I am surprised that this is happening because I thought that the worst was over.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, WARPUS, POSTER ON CIVFANATCS, by virtue of the end user agreement between me and the moderators and the privileges afforded within, hereby ask fellow posters whether this is being done "just in case" or if there's still unrest and violence in the streets that warrants a state of the emergency?

This question shall expire in thirty days unless someone answers it before that time I guess.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused to be affixed the Great Seal of Warpus, in the great country of Canada, on this great 17th day of November, in the great year of 2014.

A tale of two protests.

Our first protest will be conducted the way the cop apologists believe an effective protest should be conducted. After some period of time the protesters, who have made a diligent effort to not get in anyone's way, are told by police that they have had their say and it is time to disperse. They respectfully call the officers 'sir' and return to their homes. The mayor appears on television, reminds everyone that there is no racial tension in the city, commends the police department for their patience in handling the protests, and returns to his office for a strategy meeting with his reelection staff.

Our second protest ends with the national guard protecting police command centers. The mayor is again found giving a television interview. When he says 'there is no racial tension', the flames backlighting the scene make even the most gullible citizen raise an eyebrow. From off screen a local business owner can be heard shouting "Then why is my store on fire you [deleted] moron!? The next time you are gladhanding for contributions at the Kiwani's luncheon I'm not contributing, I'm breaking your [deleted] arm you son of a [deleted]!!!"

So...which protest do you see as more likely to lead to actual change?

Fine line between free speech and jury tampering, I wouldn't want to serve on a grand jury with thousands of people demanding I vote to indict

There's that, then there's the fact that it's going to be very difficult for people to separate facts from media-fed distortions. I know they're supposed to cut people off from media sources, but I have no doubt that they still saw/heard ridiculous media reports before they were part of the jury.

I would suppose there are also thousands of people demanding they return no indictment. Few policemen are indicted in the US. Grand juries just do not seem to like to do so.

Grand juries are already tampered with as only the prosecutor's side of the case is heard.

Which is why grand juries almost always indict...unless of course the prosecutor is just totally not interested in getting them to do so.

This grand jury has been sitting since before the incident, so they will have been instructed not to read or watch about the incident, since from when it first happened. I think it little likely that they will have actually observed that injunction, but they won't have learned what they learned before they were part of the jury.

Do they really have a team of jurists who just sit around and wait for stuff like this to happen? Are they cut off from the outside world (and their lives) for weeks/months before an incident, just waiting for something to happen?

The grand jury in question had likely indicted dozens of ham sandwiches in less high profile cases by now.

No, there's just always stuff happening. This grand jury wasn't called for this event, this event just happened while this grand jury was serving.

I thought this was worth it to post even though its kind of a delayed response. The answer to the two questions asked is YES! I was in that area three weeks ago and had to be escorted away from a walmart that was being shut down because looters attempted to loot the place at about 830 at night. Luckily enough police officers were able to respond quickly enough to safeguard the business and the people like me and a few of my friends who were in there shopping when the mass crowd came out of no where. On that same note, from what I gathered from the people in the area was that the police were trying to de-publicize the events that have been occurring to try and subdue the violence, but this clearly isn't working. The other question is this a just in case yes, if this officer is found innocent we will see my hometown burn itself to the ground, as sad as that is. I would bet that even if he is found guilty there will be some level of violence.

Mind you also, the same night I was at that walmart a different set of protesters were across the river trying to loot a series of businesses leading up to a Casino. Needless to say Police put that one down with a quickness.

They're not outside the courthouse yelling "no justice, no peace"

I thought Wilson was invited to speak, but that aint a matter of free speech - prosecutors are state employees. Not that I understand why the deck is so stacked against the accused, we'd be disgusted with a court that convicted people after denying them a defense. I would anyway, so the grand jury system already seems skewed to me.

If he was, then that is unusual and shows how cop-friendly the game is rigged.
