Diplo is easy even on deity, that's why most people avoid it if possible.

It was fun, though. The game mechanics and the whole feeling was a lot different. For once, I was not the most hated civ in the world

Now that I've done this, I think I need to revisit the culture victory. I suspect that I actually only did it on vanilla civ, and the mechanics are vastly different in BNW. Some people are claiming it is very hard if other conditions are not turned off (such as time and tech).

Yeah, culture victories are fun. I like to tinker with great works CVs are only hard it you happen to have a run away tourism civ around. It is often France.
