Hello fellow civ players

I am sorry if i dont post this on the right topic, but i have problems to find the right solution for my problem.

Since i have Windows 8.1 i can't play Civ2 anymore, i have looked on forums and websites but i am not a computer genius and dont know what to do.

I used to play the original civ 2 and i also have the scenario disk. I have played the game on windows vista but that was a download called gold edition.

My questions are:
1) Is there a way to play Civ 2 again?
2) What and where should i download it?
3) Are there any special files that i have to move or replace somewhere and how should i do that?

You guys would be a big help

Best Regards

Wouter from Holland

I got mine on amazon for a measly 10$. some say it is to much but having an original copy is worth 50$ to me

1) Yes. Buy it online and install it.
2) Most downloads online will be pirate.
3) There are indeed! Check out the patch project on this site!

For an overview of options, please see this thread, keeping in mind that you have a 16-bit-version:

The workaround of changing the original version to the Multiplayer Gold Edition is probably the easiest among several difficult ways to get it to work.

Instructions can be found in this thread:

My own solution was using the freeware program DOSBox to install Windows 3.1 (I still had those floppy disks) following these instructions:

http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=9405

and then install Civ2 under Windows 3.1 inside DOSBox. It worked in the end, but it was a hairpulling experience, details of which I have unfortunately forgotten.

i have civ 2 again Verrucosus thanks alot!

step 1: copy civ2 folder from cd
step 2: install all patches to Gold editon.
step 3: use that mastermind thing.
step 4: run the civ.exe as windows xp

I will test a full game now and will report it here.

thanks Wouter

Great! Have fun!

Personally, I've found that the magic of Civ2 just doesn't go away (played it just two months ago). I'm very grateful to the many contributions in the tech forum that prevented it from fading into obsolence.
