Imagine: what if there were a way to cut the cost of upgrades in half? Or double the effectiveness of all our cathedrals? Or even reduce the upkeep cost of all commerce buildings to 0?!

Well, dream no longer, because all these wonderous feats can be achieved... with Wonders! Now that the Roman war is all but over, perhaps it's time to turn away from blood and iron and focus on culture and learning. And a key part of culture is, of course, Wonders. But, what/where/when/how many should we build?

Please discuss..

Well, RM aside, there must be someone else out there who'd like to build a wonder. I can't think of a better time to do it. We've got a "strong" military compared to everyone else on the continent, and we can use our samurai effectively for most of the medieval age. Now's the time to focus on culture and science.

I think at the very least we should build the Sistine chapel or Leo's workshop. There's also Smith's trading house to think about. Bach's cathedral is also a nice wonder to have. Personally, I would like to see a prebuild for Sistine start up on the next turnchat.

i could think of a better time, but im not bringing that up ;)
i really think i might agree with rm, it would be a small challenege in this game without wonders :D

I'd like to see wonders built. It will be a long time before we get a proper toilet in here (sanitation), so cities like Zojoji are going to need something to build. With our lead in the Cultural World, the addition of Wonders will only strenthen our Victory-driven lead. Let's shift gears and start thinking about Wonders. We do need The Sistine Chapel, we do need Smith's, we do need JS Bach's, just as we need Wonders from the Industrial Age (whatever that is). Let's play this game to its fullest and start building Wonders. Think how far off Sanitation is.

see there are so many wonders that will give us the lead, but do we want to lead right now? taking the lead this early just means we get all of these nice wonders and slowly get too powerful for other nations and they are squatted. wouldnt the dg be funner if we were the underdog?

That's your argument against wonders?! You don't want Japanatica to take the lead? What are you, Roman? :D

what are you a wonder hog? ;)

Use a Shinto/Buddhist philosophy and refrain from the crass demands of soci-- oh wait, that's Sid Meier's Alpha Centuri.

Let's challenge ourselves and NOT use wonders as crutches. half-off barracks, cheap temples (culture is usually a weak point for us in the early game), a great UU that can trigger the perfectly timed Golden Age is a crutch enough. ;) With a Golden Age, our GPT will soar (atleast double), and the more cities we take, the more unit support we'll have.

Actually, I believe we should build all three wonders, or attempt to anyway.

Why? With the addition of the Roman cities, it should not damper our war efforts in the least bit.

Free Maintence, half cost upgrades, and doubled effect of cathedrals? We might not get this chance again.

And like I mentioned earlier, Fanatikku and Zojoji will run out of things to build. We should allow Wonder building. Keeping these cities from benefiting from the Culture and kepping Japanatica from the overall benefits doesn't make sense in a situation like this.

i see, in this case i believe we should skip sistines and hold that prebuild for js's cathedral. also smiths looks nice, also one of my favorite wonders this age is Copernicus' Observatory along with Newton's University. more science is fun fun fun ;)

But the Sistine Chapel will accentuate our inexpensive Cathedrals. We should try to use our religious trait to it's fullest extent, I believe.

It does seem that we have the production available to build wonders. I usually skip the middle age wonders (as well as the ancient age wonders, save one or two), but I like Smith's. The Copernicus and Newton's combination in one city is nice. Sistine or Bach's could be helpful. I wouldn't waste our time getting to free artistry, so Shakespeare's will wait. Leonardo's probably would come after most (if not all) of our horsemen are upgraded, so it is not a priority. It could come useful in defensive unit upgrades or cavalry upgrades, however. I'm not sure whether we have a chance for Sun Tzu's. Did I miss any?

On the other hand, purposely trying (and probably failing) to make the game difficult by not building wonders is an interesting proposition.

Exactly. I fail to see the point some people make by saying that wonders will make the game less challenging. This is akin to the US government saying, "we've decided to cut all healthcare spending, because it makes our citizens' lives too darn easy". As members of the DG government, we have a duty to make Japanatica as great as it can be. Some people have proposed doing this through military conquest, which is fine. But, there's an entire other side of the game. A side that focuses on culture, learning, and the well-being of our citizens. Why would we neglect this part of the game?

Imposing artificial restrictions may work fine for one of the Succession games, but not for the Demogame. The DG isn't about setting up a challenging game, it's about a bunch of people putting their heads together to run a country as best they can. And part of that includes expanding the culture of our civilization.

We should start 2 wonders early on (that means in next 2 TC NOT LATER) and triger the golden age. We can get both Sistine (we need it because we have cheap Cathedrals) and Leonardo's (I suggest starting immediately Palace prebuild in Zojoji).
By the time we get Economics one of the wonders will probably be finished or very near completition. But its crucial to triger GA. For instance Fanatikku would have around 30 shields per turn, that means only 20 turns (20x30=600 shields) to build a wonder, exactly the time we need -> GA time.

well with samurai coming we dont need to worry about our ga

Again, I've said: there are two choices:

1) be peaceful and build wonders
2) attack our neighbors and take control of our continent AND the wonders they've built

Number 2 includes number 1 in a little bit. If we focus militarily, then we will gain wonders and more cities. Cities = production. We will rule the world. :smug:

We need military. There is no way we can build wonders in our core cities and go to war - we need the units quick!
