How about Firaxis releases a redone version of Civilization 1. I'm sure they could remake the game quickly because of it's simplicity. Give it updated graphics (But keep the 2D!) and of course make it fully XP compatible (32 bit). They could either sell it seperately for cheap $15.99, or include it with Civilization IV.

The reality is that once 64 bit Windows arrives, it's going to be even more difficult to play DOS games, and so many people will never get the pleasure of playing Civ1.

Eh... It will never happen.

But wouldn't it be nice? A Civ1 with the AI actually moving Caravans and Diplomats around. A smarter AI with automated settlers and better auto movement of units? A version of Civ1 with units having Hit Points? A perfect Civ1. :)

Indeed... Wouldn't it be nice.

It would be nice.
But I think that smarter AI is quite difficult to program... Hitpoints wouldn't be so hard to do though!

Yeah, it would be nice. :D

I wouldn't even mind about a better AI. But I would love an editing tool which would allow us players to change the graphics.
And, yeah, the Civ 2 hit point system would be nice.

There are those guys who program FreeCiv or CivEvo. Maybe we could interest them in trying their hands on a updated version of Civ 1?

Civ.1 as a net game:
more simple civ.1 rules, civnet/civ.2/freeciv-auto-settlers and civ.1.graphics.
yeah.

Q.:
what do you want to change in civ.1 graphics?

Wouldn't this run into intellectual property issues?

Maybe Firaxis doesn't own the rights, but they could buy them or just get an agreement of some sort, like Koei did to port (I'd even say slightly remake because the map's are different and the unit's look different) the game for the SNES.

The reality is that the original Civ is sinking in to oblivion, and that just shouldn't happen.

Just make the pictures on them less pixely. They could use more colors too. Maybe they could even add more units. Wouldn't that be nice?

Yup, that's what was on my mind too. A simple praphical retouch on some of the units would be nice (militia being the worst, in my opinion).
Also, I would like to get rid of those statues in the palace screen and finally replace them with lush huge trees. The grey tone is so annoying!

Yeah, definitely! The palace screen could use a facelift.

Yes, I'd want to fix the AI, all the bugs and AI cheats and make a scenario editor (edit graphics and rules...) oh, and also add some good music and sounds

I guess I'm the only one that has turned the palace off all the time... ;)
no. :goodjob:
i don't like 'palace' too.

after the 1st move/turn i 'un-check' it in OPTiONS and save that game.

the only things i left active
in

game > options

are
END OF TURN
and
ENEMY MOVES
:king:

Wouldn't it be really good if the next version of Civ had an editor that let you:
- Replace the unit icons with anything that you wanted
- Edit the technology tree
- Disable units that you don't like
- Import your own graphics for the palace, etc

Then I would make it look and feel just like Civ1.

This is junk, not allowing us to use CIV2 on Xp. Microsoft could fix the problem easily, but they'd rather we spend lots on NEW software even if it si inferior to old stuff. By the year 2013 I beleive we will all be using computers similar to those old Apples that you always see stuck in peoples basements.

I think Civ 2 works fine but I haven't tried. Civ 2 was for windows so I doubt it has a problem. They are talking about Dos Civ.

My Civ2 does not work on XP.

Oh sorry about the ranting. I had experienced a particurarly nasty problem with my wok computer earier that day.

Did you try to use compatibility mode? Right click on civ.exe or whatever it is and choose properties, then compatibility. Look it up on google if you don't know how.

If someone wanted to, it shouldn't be too hard to track down who owns the rights to the game... I've done it for other games.

The reason they didn't program the AI to move individual units is that it makes it too tough to program the AI. They basically used programming short cuts. The advantage is that the AI is much stronger. The drawback is that the game doesn't move individual units. To program the AI to be as strong AND move individual units is something no one is going to want to take on for the simple reason of cost/benefit. Doing so would not cause sales to pick up in the least, except for the very short list of fanatics. Almost all of whom post here.

I don't know how much effort it would take to get the game to be able to be played on XP.

I think it would be easier to simply have a part of your hard drive that can run old fashioned DOS and then run Civ from there when you wanted to.

My Two Cents,

Steve

If you're talking about Caravans and Diplomats, I understand what you are saying. However, then they should change the rules of how the human player plays. Make Caravans take longer to build and then once they are built you can select the city you want them to go to and it happens automatically the next turn. And then don't require us to build diplomats, let us just use a unit and give an option to use that unit's turn for diplomatic options. It's not that the AI isn't programmed to do what we have to do that frustrates people, it's that the player has to do what the AI doesn't have to do, that gets people frustrated.
