Forgetting Your Units (Simple Suggestion)

Do not know if this has been suggested yet, but I've been suggesting it for a year, although I've not been that obsessed with it.

With a game as complex as this, most of us often come to forget our fortified units. When we do, we often miss some opportunities.
I'll give you an example:
You build a Galley. You send it out and fortify it until you build The Great Lighthouse (so you can explore afterwards).
Well, it just so happens that when you do build the Great Lighthouse, you completely forget about your Galley.

Here's what I suggest. When you fortify a Galley, you should be able to choose after how many turns it should automatically "wake up" in this case, when you finish the GL.
However, you should not be given this option every time as it would become annoying. You should just do it yourself if the feature is there.

In my opinion, this should not be that hard to add, and it will make it much more efficient to manage fortified units.

Well, I hope this is added, but with the volume of suggestions coming out, I doubt the devs will have the time to consider it. Who knows…

I highly agree. In addition, I think you should also be able to unfortify units in case of attack. This would save a player from building too many units.

SHIFT n F should do this unless it already has a pointless purpose i dont no from civ3?

Yes, but it does not wake your units up after X turns.

why don't you just fortify your galley 1 square outside your city? That way it is harder to miss incase you forgot about it or something.

Yeah, but the Galley is not the only example. And it's not always convenient to do this.

Just develop a better memory.

I would rather see code used on something like a better governmental model.

:)

@curtSibling
Oh, yes to develop this function needs an enormous time of money. Really. The Game would be delayed by month, if not even years...

Verily, I do collapse under the shocking barrage of of your witty Wildean sarcasm.

Not.

Actually;
I think this function is just another waste of time, like the plethora of auto-worker controls.

I in turn collapse under the shocking barrage of wise and adequate arguments supporting your opinion.

Not.

Actually;
I think this function would be a very handy tool to make life easier. If you don't feel any need to use it, well... don't use it. But don't complain that it's a waste of time, because implementing it would be coffee break work for the programmers.

...

One such a change should indeed not be such hard work. But if everyone would put his optional things in it...it will be a lot of work.
My feeling is that not many persons suffer from this not auto-awakening of fleets. But I could be wrong in that ofcourse;)

It wouldn't be that hard for you to create this function yourself. It would be the simplest Python script, you or I could do it the day it came out.

When I get civIV, I'll be making some mods to take care of some of these nuisances. Maybe if I get in a beta test (if there will be one) of some sort, I could release the mod the day the game is released (that, however, is wishful thinking...).

i lose track of galleys / curraghs when i am sailing around and I encounter barb galleys, i'll fortify my ship to prepare for their attack and sometimes forget to wake the thing up next turn, i think this is a good idea, a simple fortify for one turn or x turns.

I don't think ships should have a fortify command. A sleep command, sure, but not fortify. It's not as if they have anything to make fortifications with out there, and any competant crew will be on the lookout for incoming stuff anyway.

perhaps they just gather water up around the ship and make a water fort, i guess that would work better in the winter, then they could make an ice fort. :hmm:

Ships can see one square farther in each distance when 'fortified', maybe it simply means they're on some kind of high alert patrol? I often put lots of fortified ships outside my coast just to be able to monitor the AI's naval activity, and then they're able to act as a naval strike force.

Ships vision is something else I have an issue with. Generally, I think modern ships should have a vision of 3-4 tiles anyway. thatll make naval warfare more useful. With ships movement rates, even at the current low civ3 levels, they are walking and fighting blind.
