Age of Discovery - Training Game

This is a training SG for kids from 7-11, each child has an attached adult mentor so that the game flows. The intention is that each child does play the turn as they want, the key thing being that they write down and explain everything they do.

We are playing Conquests C3C, and the Age of Discovery Conquest as the Portugese.

Game level Regent.

Hi,

I'm looking to see if there is interest in starting an SG for young kids, under 10's. No I'm not under 10, but my girlfriends son (who is 7) is now hooked on civ (he caught me playing) and keeps asking to get into an SG. He's too young to play a standard SG, but I thought if there was interest we could start a game, with each child having an adult mentor.

We could let them play the game the way they want, and do the write ups, but we would be there to make sure it goes well.

I haven't thought much more beyond that right now.

Here is the Roster

Kep (smackster) - playing
Linebacker (Admiral Kutzov) on deck
Duimelot (a space oddity)
Triple_C (vostos)
The Dude (DragonRunner)

24 hours "I got it", 72 hours "to play" with a lot of flex. The "I got it" can come from the mentor.

Here is the save

I'm thinking there must be parents, that have kids who want to play, so the kids are not on the forum, and you probably don't want the kids here without the parent. Don't you have a little brother -Oblivion-?

Good point, i hadn't thought of that - and don't get me wrong, i think it is a great idea, getting in new blood. I voted in that poll a few days ago so it immediately came to mind. A case of er, not thinking before you speak (or type ;) )

And, no, i have a younger sister, but she is 13.

Well I came up with U-10 as my one (well not really mine) is 7, but its not a hard rule. Although 12-7 is probably too different.

We can play it slow or fast, long or short (tiny map even).

lurker's comment: I suppose you can get Fruit-Smack (Whenever I type that name, I have to tell myself, "No, not Fruit candy, and no, not fruits basket) to play. It's well advertised that it he is ten...

Or, you can do what Admiral K did with Linebacker - Play a training-type game with him

The linebacker game died 'cause we had viral problems on the home computer. Linebacker also had too many sports to make it viable when we got the problems resolved. he is now free and wants to resume. Given the experience with our previous attempt, I'd suggest a tiny map, panagea, sedentary barbs, chieftan. At the age you talking about, it's tough to get them to consider the options for trading, civ specific traits (might want to turn them off). If you decide to do this in Conquests 1.22, Linebacker would love to play. Would also suggest a 48 hour got it instead of the usual 24. Linebacker just hit 11.

I have 2 younger brothers (7 and 12) THe 12 year-old is hooked on civ, but he's at warlord level. Honestly, I can't see a 7 year old having what it takes to play civ. It's probably a little too big for him. I'll ask him when I get home from school.

That's what I thought about my 7 year old, I kept telling him he wouldn't like Civ as its too slow and you have to think about what you are doing, but he keeps playing it.

Hmmm. My son's one and willing. But then again, it might not be him playing. :D He could probably contribute some saliva to the game though.

Great idea though.

@grs: yes! ;)

In todays reality it'll be books AND computer games (in that order). There's a whole range of very good, non-violent games out there. So, like everything else, in moderation it's a enrichment.

IMHO, as always.

Civ's given Linebacker interest in historical events (i.e. why didn't the US find the Japanese fleet to the NW of Pearl Harbor) and has led to some interesting discussions about what to read to answer some of the questions. I think it has also contributed to an interest in historical fiction.

@ grs - I agree. Linebacker already reads very well. He did 2/3 of LOTR at nine after seeing the first movie. I do agree that one may be used to encourage the other.

@ smackster - maybe do one of the conquests on chieftan? Historical perspective, no need to build lots of infrastructure in some of them and they're short.

I don't think age has much to do with it, we should all pick up books and read them, and I agree with a space oddity, its all about moderation. Us civers know more than any others about that don't we now :)
