I want your opinions about the Iroquois AI in this game. It is an emperor C3C 1.22 game. It is 1150 AD and the AI Iroquois just declared war on Persia (human player).

Are the Iroquois big enough to be considered a runaway AI?

I have attached a game save and some pics.

I downloaded this game off a thread on this website and I cannot locate the original thread. There were two saves 1140 AD and 1150 AD. The game save was dated 8/27/04. The only other clue is there was an elite archer named "Tom Anderson". Any help finding it would be appreciated.

I wouldn't consider it a runaway. Be careful of letting his culture get out of hand, though.

Agreed, culture used to be my undoing when I first played my first hundred or two Civ3 games, but I've figured that one out! :p

I remember playing a few turns of this the first time it was posted, but I have no idea who posted it. It is a tough position, the Iroquois have a fairly large tech lead, and a bunch of cavalry in the middle of Greek territory and have just divided the empire in half by capturing several cities. None of the other civs would be much help to fight against the Iroqouis. They're not unstoppable, but it would be a come-from-behind victory if you can pull it off.

I agree. It will be very tough. Depends on your military, though. If these spearmen I see are all you have, you're dead.

Check out this one from an abandoned succession game I was in:

Oh, we were Korea, starting on the one-city island tile. We got two other islands and some slivers of the mainland.

Thanks for the replies and votes. I thought this would be considered a runaway AI by an easy majority but apparently not. At the moment, there are 2 yes, 7 probably and 7 no.

I admit I had already played this game to the end before this thread was started and have a draft of a strategy article I have written about it. Once I put the finishing touches on the article I will post it here on civfanatics. I think it may be useful to share my approach to this game.

Further votes/comments still appreciated

I would say definitely yes. Spearmen vs. Cavalry ???!! You're in for a very rough time. but If anyone can do it, it's you Zerksees. Btw, nice writeup on the Japanese play-from-behind-game.

I put, yes definately, the Iroqouis are already in the Industrial Age and divided the Persian territory in half, if this isnt a runaway AI then i don't know what is.

Nah, that should be nothing for Zerksees (very very nice comeback as the Japanese in the "everyone thought that was lost" game)! Take the Iroqese cities in the middle and you don't have much to worry about, it seems to me, that if you take those cities at any cost, it would not be that hard to defend against them coming from their main territory. Also get everyone to dogpile on them even if it means setting science to zero and paying everyone a gazzilion gold per turn... But I should not be the one to give you advice, I'm still learning all the neat tricks from your comeback article and just recently made a small comeback of my own on the monarck level....

It is not a runaway but has a potential to be.

The Iroqois are at a disadvantage because their Empire is split. True Run-Aways devour their rivals and create basically an entire swath of land that is under their control, with their core well protected and lots of aggressive unit to counterattack with, their threat factor is quite high as any potential challenger would have to neutralize the massive numerical advantage of the runaway, then peel away the layers and layers of cities around the runaway.
