Last night on the Discovery Channel I saw a program that said that Japan
had received nuclear material as a 'final gift' from Hitler and had an operation
planned that would have put a 'Bomb' on the California coast  . The
plan was for one of those Giant Japanese subs (with the seaplanes inside)
would near the coast and the planes would transport the bomb(s). The date
set for the operation ended up being only 2 DAYS after the eventual
surrender :wow: . I had never heard of this  , it seems the US
just BARELY won the race. Do you guys know much of this? :scan:

Seems like BS to me. I know that the Germans where researching the a-bomb but if they had had one, they would've used it. The reason the US bombed Japan on those two specific dates where to get their full (unconditional) surrender before Russia entered the war. Japan had been asking for surrender (just not unconditional) up until Hiroshima and Nagasaki (their main beef lied in the US demanding them to give up their emperor)

It was speculation. But the Nazis never got close to a working A-Bomb. They had the elements, but because Norweigen guerillas destroyed the Nazi's only heavy water plant they never got close to a working model. The Japanese might have gotten plans and some materials, but they were nowhere near building one. And where would they have built it safely in the final days of the war? Japan? It got destroyed by the bombing; building one there is too risky Manchuria? The Russians had an army massed on the border, so its not safe there.

They did have more heavy water, some was discovered in southern Germany
after the wars end.
The plans, models, etc... were at Osaka University- I'm not sure of the
bombing effects there!? I'm not stating anything as fact, I was just wondering:
what everyone thought, if it was possible, what 'could' have happened.......

I know the Germans sent Uranium to Japan, but I think the rest of it is pure speculation.

So they probably had at least a beginning of a 'plan' don't you think?

Yeah, but even if they could have gotten the necesary materials and plans done. They would have never managed to make one on time.

The mission date was set for August, it ended up being only TWO days
after the Surrender date. So if the US would have taken another couple of
weeks to drop the bombs........ :scan:

But they wouldn't have since then Russia would've entered the war and started to counquer parts of Japan(Something the US did not plan on). Remember the US did not bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki to end th war with Japan but to Show off their new weapon to the Russians.

[Superisis] Hang on. You say the Japanese wanted to surrender before the nuclear bombs were dropped, but wanted to keep their emperor, and the Americans would not accept this deal? So how come, in the peace that was made after the bombs, the Japanese got to keep their emperor after all? This doesn't make sense to me.

It took A LOT of heavy water back then to make an A-bomb back then. You needed a factory constantly making it.

This is the first time I read about that. I read about German nukes and a German nuclear test beginning of ´45. But that?
HOWEVER the last German Uboat, which surrendered in 1945, had a cargo of secret plans, which were destroyed before surrender, and Uranium. Just the Uranium the US needed to buid three bombs...

Yes, the U-boat was mentioned in the program also. The allies feared that
many of the last U-boats may have contained Uranium and therefore put the
petal to the metal on their plans.

I think this is true-the Americans at that point would accept no less than unconditional surrender. However, after a short while (and they realised that any more fighting would cost the US Army many lives) they agreed after the A-bombs.

The Japanese government accepted an unconditional surrender after the Bombing of Nagasaki.

The US could have allowed Japan to surrender about a month before that. The japanese sole condition of surrender (as of 13th July I believe) was that their Emperor would remain in place.

They certainly had this planned, but had neither the bombs nor the giant submarines. They would have needed years to develop either, and with the American blockade against them, would have had a tough time getting the resources to do it.

That is not true. I have seen proof of the Giant Subs, I believe they could
hold 2 or 3 of these planes. Whether they could have pulled it off or not is
another story :mischief: .
