NewUnit: Plomée (February 10,2005)

This is the first of the units that I'm making for LouLong. I believe that it's a Burgundian unit, but he would have to confirm that and give any details about its uses.

There are two zip files. One has the unit named Plomée with that accent on the "e." I'm not sure if everyone would want that or if CivIII will allow that with units as it does with city names. So, there is also a Plomee without the accent mark.

It seems I forgot an "m" somewhere, it is actually a "plommée".

I have JUST found a description of the weapon as being a mass (made of lead which is plomb in French) that evolved into a mass/spear.

BTW forwarded the answer I got for the Italian, not much help I am afraid. But pietone might do the job.

It is not specifically Burgundian but can be used for other late medieval armies (France, Burgundy, West Germany and North Italy).
 
Oops. Sorry about the name mistake.

Okay, I saw the answer. Pietone works for me, so we'll go with that. ETA: a couple of days.

Nice work, utah! (Can Lou or anyone else enlighten me on what sort of use these soldiers were put to? I.e., should I flag it offensive or defensive or what?)
 
Well, as I said, I don't know anything about him, other than the way he looks. But, as LouLong is planning on adding him to a scenerio or two, he should know. It's just a matter of getting his attention, I guess. :)

Sorry lately and for some more time won't spend much time in this part of the forums (just checking quickly) as a PBEM contest I have (tried to) set up is currently starting and keeping me kind of busy.

As said in post 5 I have found plommée is coming from the word "lead" in French because it used to be a kind of lead hammer. But it evolved during the late Middle-Ages into a more sophisticated form, combined with a spear. This was not a very frequent weapon but enough soldiers used it that it can be made into a unit. As was the case for many "peculiar" weapons of that age that tried many different things.

Apparently it was successfull against horses/mounted troops.

I guess Steph would know more about it actually.
 
A general question for all,

Should we use the plomee and pietone units as some type of spearman available with Chivalry? A special levyman of somekind? Or an outright replacement for the French/Italian Pikemen? :confused:
