GooD! I like the kind of Saddam look in modern times.

He is shown in this carving to have a small mouth. You gave him mick jagger lips. Very large mouth. Good looking model though.

I really cant see anything, but the asserians like some of the geeks used the same model for most people. That statue could be almost anyone in Assyrian history or religion. No one not here or any where else can say he looked like anything. And its a little late for that

It is an interesting face, and is well done. And there certainly aren't any photographic records, thats for sure. But the only images we have from him show a quite different face. If the oddity of the rendered mouth doesn't bother you, then don't worry about it.

@Bjornlo: I know you're just as critical of your own work, but Shiro's done a really nice job on these LHs IMO and it's not much help pointing out imperfections after he's spent weeks making them. Personally I like it that they aren't exact replicas - it means they are flexible, Assurbanipal could just as easily become Shamsi-Adad or Tikulti-Ninurta for instance. And a bit of artistic license gives more personality. After all we're not after a statue

I don't offer criticism to be mean spirited, just the opposite. I knew it took a while to render good 3d object such as leaderheads; though I had no idea it took 4 hours.
I also reccognize that Shiro is doing us a favor by sharing what he as done.
I figured someone taking an honest detailed look at it without any name calling or petty intent might be useful.
I'm not the artist he is. I could not come close to duplicating his work. I appologize if my effort to help was not well recieved.

Some day I should give Shiro, Civ'sArmy and the other LH artists something to laugh at and attempt a leaderhead of my own. Of course I'd probably get myself banned for posting the "piece of carp" that would represent my best effort.

Besides I figure the worst thing that could happen for Shiro and rest of the artists here is to never get an honest opinion.... actually I suppose being completely ignored would be worse. Either way, they both know I was interested enough in their work to look and look very closely. And while I appreciate their work, I also sometimes see little "niggles"... but then again, even the MonaLise has a funny smile.

it is just anoying to work hard on something for free then have someone post things of statues from 1500 years ago (from a time period were a staute of anyone could be a statue of anyone else) like it is a photo of the actual guy, I welcome comments but not when its done, thats why I show all my work in progress on the board. Im sorry if I seem out of line here, but this kind of thing makes me angry.

I'm sure we can all forgive and forget.

How strange. You're polite until I attempt to make a conciliatory post explaining my benign intentions. I can be rude too, perhaps I should try it sometime, since at least the preception of rudeness seems to be what you prefer. How interesting... I wish I could find my old psychology book to sort out what all this means.

Either way, learn to take critism that was well intended or learn to ignore posts that are too polite for you (or annoy you for more traditional reasons).

I took an interest in your art and took the time to find the best possible image of a face you rendered. I then compared your take on this face to the last other. The fact that this face is quite ancient is not germane. The fellow in question is also quite ancient. If you did not want your face to be compared to the other, then you could have named your render after someone more obscure, or just add to your signature that you don't want critiques of finished work

You should note, that I never said your render was poorly done. I only commented that there were some discrepancies between your post and the available data on what he might have looked like.

You spent a couple of hours of your computers time rendering this version, that is laudable. But, should that make your render above comparison to the what history recorded his face looking like?

I post a bit of my stuff here too. I can all but guarantee that my first unit took at least as long as your leaderheads. But I do not hold my work above criticism just because it took me a while to do it. Perhaps you should consider something along these lines as well? Or failing that, have a go at reciprocity and criticize the stink out of my feeble works. I promise I won't take it badly.

And again, since you didn't believe me the first time. Consider that I am bothering to repeat myself in the face of your less then kind reply.

In looking at it some more, I'd have to say even with my quibbles, I'd agree that it is the best arab leader head I've seen.

Nice job. Now there's finally a 3d-animated Ashurbanipal in addition to my old 2d-animated one.

Shiro has had a preview thread for this and the other new LHs in the main forum for the last three or four weeks where ideas for facial appearance, costumes, backgrounds and so on have been discussed in exhaustive detail by anyone who cares to drop in. So I think he's just a bit peeved that you're making points *now*, after the Lh has already gone through all that, when you didn't make any comments at the development stage.

I think this is a good LH and certainly a much-needed addition to the game.

Which would you say was a better image, the one in your image or the one I posted? Which would you say would be a better basis for creating a likeness for this dead king?

Will either be 100% correct? Nope. That was never my point. I used the best looking image I could find after looking at a couple of them. And, then gave some constructive criticism.

I should have tried to make some comments during his early work on this. I missed it.
That said, should someone calling something (anything) "FINISHED" make it sacrosanct, above reproach and render any constructive criticism, even the most benign, as some sort of slander?
Imagine if you will, your neighbor builds a play area for the kids in your neighborhood. He calls it done, but leaves some flaw which you think might make less then ideal for its intended task.... pick a flaw, maybe something minor like the hand rails on the slide is not deburred. Or perhaps less harmful, he used paper thin sheet metal instead of some thicker and rust proof material on the same slide. He said he was done, would you want to tell him the slide will rust out in about a week of rain? After all he said he was done.

Calling something done does not make it above constructive criticism. If the artist, builder, etc is unwilling to hear any such comments he (or she) could post a little sign. "This work is done, and will not be revised. Only complimentary comments are welcome."

You've done a great job here, Shiro, though I'm disappointed that his face in the ancient age isn't like gravel, as per the statue that rifleman posted .

@Drift: That 2D version of this leaderhead always has a special place in my heart .

@Bjornlo - the 2D version that Drift did is definately sacrosant and is above all criticism .
