Apologies to the Director of Commerce for starting this instead of leaving it be -- but we're at a crossroads.

The title says it. The Dutch have Map Making, and we are 1 turn from Philosophy. It would be an incredibly bad move to choose a tech that someone else already has. What should we pick now that circumstances have changed?

24 or so hours discussion, then I'll ask for unanimous consent to play the turn and set the stage for Term 2. :D

Whichever tech would take the longest to research

The External Consulates policy is that overall, trading should be conducted in such a way as to maximise profitability. For this reason I ask that the most expensive monopoly tech available should be taken. Whether this tech gets us nearer to Republic or not does not concern me, since it is my opinion that we are in no condition to change government yet.

I assume that this would mean taking Polytheism.

Or we could always take literature. I'm not a fan of Republic when I have to fight a war while pinched in. Pinched in = longer war = more war wariness.

What you say is undoubtedly true director. However the External Consulate has a clear policy of prosecuting war against India and The Netherlands in a time frame well before a government switch. Further, the diversion from acquiring those techs which allow us to reach the MA is not IMHO a luxury we can afford right now. Finally of course, Literature would accelerate the progress toward Republic, and could result in a destructive debate regarding research path.

Literature CAN of course be considered, and there are offices which deal with research and such. Such offices may draw the conclusion that Literature is necessary in order to build the GLib, or to generate culture through libraries or to increase our research rate. That is not my concern. I merely point out that from a trading perspective it is this offices policy to maximise profit through trading - and that policy should be weighed against requirements of the other offices.

I think we should take Construction. We would try and trade this to the Dutch for Map Making. Only our immediate neighbors know Math so this will remain hidden from the distant AIs for a while and enhance trade opportunities.

Looking at the save via CivAssist it appears that we know how numbers work IE: MATH.

This opens up: Construction and Currency.

We can take any AA tech except for the Governments.

CivAssist lists the costs as follows:
Construction: 800
Currency: 640
Poly: 480
MM: 456
Col and Lit: 400
HBR: 140

A Monopoly on Construction might buy us Map Making straight up from the Dutch. Once we trade it to the Dutch we won't need to worry about the Dutch extorting it from us.

At this point the choices for free tech are:

Construction - 39
Currency - 31
CoL - 20
Lit - 20
Map Makng - 22 known by Netherlands
HBR - 7 not worth considering but listed for completeness
Polytheism - 23

How about the inter-turn trading technique? If someone gets Code of Laws this turn (before we come up) then it is possible to do:
  1. Big Picture
  2. F4
  3. Trade Philo for CoL
  4. F6
  5. Choose Republic
  6. Exit
  7. Get Republic as the free tech
  8. Choose something else for the next tech

In some circles this is an exploit, and in others it is doing what the AI does, which is getting it and trading it immediately. What say you, the citizens, about this techniques?

Didn't realise we had Math.

Take the Republic Slingshot if possible. It is easily the best option, otherwise take construction. Errm.. and ignore previous rubbish written by the External Consul. :D

Use the Big Picture Republic slingshot if available. The one thing you left out is to goto F1 and set the Science Slider to 0% so that you have max gpt available to trade for CoL if needed.

Hmmm... I'm not a big fan of that. I would prefer we get construction as the free tech followed by a research of currency. The marketplaces will greatly aid us in our government switch, whichever one we choose.

An interesting idea - I'm all for it!

Obvious reminder - no gpt deals with India or the Dutch. Let's keep that nice reputation we have squeeky clean for now. We can always ruin it later!

Nobody will have CoL, but if they did, that would be fine. I would usually think to take currency (which would stay a monopoly longer), but since it appears we'll make quick use of construction, that would seem better. The Netherlands may have sold map making to China by next turn, although that looks like too much of a discount.

You know, I never knew you could initiate trades from the F4 advisor screen. I always went through the Diplomacy screen.

But anyway, I would try to get Republic if possible. Failing that, Construction is good. Like someone else mentioned, not everyone has math, so it will be hidden from most other civs. We can trade Construction to the Dutch for Map Making. Seeing as they are already building the Pyramids, if we can get them started on the Great Wall too, we can time our eventual invasion to coincide with a time when they have two large cities tied up building wonders. Of course if they managed to complete the Great Wall before we're done with them that would jeopardize the war effort.

Construction gives us the most bang for our buck, as it saves us the most research time. We can also use it to get the edge on trade deals, although I am not sure I would that advantage right away with the Dutch.

We should try trading them Philosophy first, even if it costs us a litle bit of gold. Otherwise our trade advantage with other nations immediately becomes theirs.

Yes, I change my mind now. Construction would get us the most, and Chieftess is right, switching into a republic when we're about to go to war will lead to too much war weariness.

Construction, because (a) it's most likely that no other civs have it, and (b) it would take the longest for us to research.
