Why are the decks of Russian naval ships red?

I used to think it was rust due to not going underway enough, but I did a little research, and some places say it's rust and some say it isn't. My dad, who was in the Navy and got a 100% on the Soviet Threat Test, says it's rust. Also, most other navy's ships do not have red decks. What is the real answer to this? (I'll put some example pictures so you can see)

The Kiev class carrier. Note the red deck.

The Krivak class frigate. Again, note the red deck.

Because red signals communism? That or rust, most likely.

Edit: The second deck may be wood. Teak, perhaps?

Land lubbers! It is an oxide deck coating!

From the ALNAVCO web apges:

"American ships had few aerial recognition devices and in fact painted over wooden decks. One common scheme, Measure Z1, involved painting all upward facings dark blue. British ships also wore few recognition devices. British ships also wore few recognition devices. A form of non-slip covering used was gray-green in color. Other non-planked surfaces were dark gray. Modern Russian vessels and many merchantmen of all nations now use red oxide preservative paint in all planked areas."

The obvious question is this: were the decks red when the ships were brand-new, during the Cold War?

That said, if there was any country that would produce ships that would rust that badly, it was the USSR. And if there is any country in existance today that would allow its ships to get that rusty, it is the Russian Federation.

Perhaps same reason why British troops during colonial era wore red, so you can't see the blood?

Although the rot SeleucusNicator is talking is a different kind!

I acknowlege that your previous post conains the truth, but, do you mean to say that you disagree with my implication that a) Soviet goods were occasionally of an inferior quality and b) the Russian federation is doing a rather bad job preserving its Soviet-era military things?

I make a point to disagree with your 'implications' as a matter of honour!

We all know the commies had poor wargear in their heyday...But they had plenty of it!
And while the Ivan navy may have rusted to junk - The nukes are still online.

Hence, why they answer to no-one...

Hey Curt ! It's already your fifth post in this very insightful thread.
You seem very impatient to reach the 20,000 posts ! ;)

Sorry Ainwood.
Don't blame Curt, I'm the one who got off-topic.

Now to get back on-topic. It's true that Russian decks are always red. Maybe they simply use a special material to not slip on the floor ?

Here's another example of red Russian deck :

I asked my dad again, and he gave the same answer: the rust is from not getting underway enough. The ships basically sit in port for long periods of time.

If that isn't the case, I would have to say that they painted them red (but that seems a bit odd).

Here's one last picture (this one is of the Kirov class cruiser).

maybe its easier for search and rescue ? Or easy to spot from far by helicopters ?

Also maybe with progress in naval sea battle, the russian see no need in camoflaging the ships.

Search and rescue? As in search and rescue captains who have been mutinied by other officers and thrown off the ship?

i totally disagree, russian hardware is some of the best in the world, quality wise, it might not be as fancy as western stuff or look as pretty, or have as good computers...(mostly in the past)

but, you can bet your ass it will work the way its supposed to, in all weather all the time, unlike western stuff

iraqis had old russian equipment, and not in enough numbers, and not used in the right way

I find it mildly amusing that you idolize a regime that killed people en masse in order to purify the human race, yet vilify those who adhere to socialist economic principles yet have never stated any preference for the Soviet Union. I guess hypocrisy is kosher in this day and age.
