A Never Ending Story: Delusions of Grandeur,
The Year 1898 CE

Welcome, this is NES how it once was, in its purest form. There are no updates, no cumbersome stats, only stories, never-ending stories.

Firstly, this is how fast time will progress:

1 Week=1 Year

This is the Template for you to fill out for yourself, to give me an idea of what your nation is like-

Nation Name
Age:
Army:
Navy:
Government:
Religion:
Economy:

Description:

Age:

All of the developed nations in the world start at the Late-Industrial age. No Planes, or tanks yet, though. Inventions will come at their historical dates.

Note however, that nations of the far east and south pacific should probably be less developed.

Army:
Represented in words which equate to sizes-

Tiny- 20,000+
Small- 50,000+
Medium- 100,000+
Large- 500,000+
Huge- 1,000,000+
Gigantic- 2,000,000+ (usually with this many troops the army quality would be more poor than average)

Please, make it realistic or you will be ignored, and next to your army word, add a vague description on its quality, or whatever else you wish to note.

Navy:
Much the same as Army

Tiny- 10+ Ships
Small- 25+ Ships
Medium- 50+ Ships
Large- 75+ Ships
Huge- 100+ Ships
(There is no gigantic for navy, as navies were very expensive to fund)

(Note, for both army and navy, you only use the words, but you can organize it into field armies and numbers with different corps for story purposes if you really want to get detailed and fancy.)

Government:

Whatever you like, but please make it realistic for the period.

Religion:

Whatever you want, but again, realistic please. We shall say Christianity and Islam have come for dating purposes, but you do not need to be those two religions, we make our own history for the past, and the future.

Economy:

There is no stat for economy, just give us a brief description if it is agarian, mercantile, or primarily industrial, or half and half, whatever.

Description:

A general history of your nation until this point. Doesn't have to be too detailed, but it would be nice if it were, as this NES is mostly story oriented and we don't have anything else to go by.

Combat:

Two players (or more) shall play out their battles by each typing up segments of it, detailing their plans of attacks, and their opponents. Before battle however, you must, after the declaration of war, post troop movements, so both armies will know where they shall meet, and begin battle.

Players are encouraged to have some fun with these battles, and use all the fancy tactics you like in big story like battle phases. :)

----------------------------------------------------------------

In General, just have fun with it. Role play your nation from the perspective of your leaders, and don't get too unrealistic. Remember, we make our own history, so don't feel constrained by any historical events. Especially since we are also making our own past history.

Also, there are no real stat increases. Your nation might change tremendously after heavy war, and overall your military might become much smaller or much larger depending on events, and in that case, just make the edits to your template. But try not to worry about stats to much, and just make stories and have fun. Remember, this is just a game, so don't get angry if you don't get your way every time.

:)

Just remember, Have fun!

Note- There can only be 10-15 Players MAXIMUM due to the unorganized nature of this thread.

Das, Jason, and NK are reserved places. They have helped me by showing the old threads and through other things, and I know they are interested, so they shall be reserved a spot incase it fills up before they have a chance to see it. (I don't really think it will)

Description:

Once a Roman outpost, Britain was a mere backwater for hundreds of years under Roman rule, nothing compared to the great cities in Europe and the Orient. However, once the Roman empire crumbled, Britain was thrown into the spotlight, the last bastion of roman culture near the continent. However, wars in defense of her nation had proved to be very costly, and after this, Britain never really rose to prominenence for quite some time. Throughout the middle ages, she remained isolated, occassionally fighting a war with some continental nieghbor, but overall things remained uneventful. However, upon the discovery of the americas, Britain saw her oppurtunity, and began to expand, slowly but surely.

She remained however, a minor regional power as the empires of europe eclipsed her in both wealth, and military might. The discovery of steam power in by Britain's very own changed this balance forever, and the island nation was fast to industrialise. Now, she was at the top of her game, with a large industrial base, small colonial possesions throughout the world, and a fleet unrivaled by any power known to her.

However, her industrial dominance is soon eclipsing, as the nations of Europe rise once again to equal her, and her old colony, accross the atlantic, was even catching up.

(OOC: more later :) Specifically on the rise of the House of Brandenburg. I know my nation choice seems unoriginal, but I think I'll have fun with it  )

Description: After gaining its independence, the Mexican people instated a new Ruler. The young man known as Augustus Dicente the first, became the first Emperor of Mexico. But unlike in our time, the Mission Chain was not broken up. Instead it grew, the priests and cardinals soon came to lead the pueblos around their Missions. The men of cloth wield power that is slowly equaling that of the Emperor. Speaking of which, the Emperor married soon after coming to power. From that marriage, his wife bore him only three daughters. The Emperor's wife died during the birth of her last child, many years ago. To worsen the situation, the priests are outraged at the thought of a woman leading their nation. Although the Priests are able to manipulate the aging Emperor when it comes to many issues, this is one he will not budge on. He would die before the throne was handed to someone not of his bloodline. Fortunately for him, his daughter, Maria Juanita Dicente II is just as passionate as her father in her desire for the throne.

Territory includes all of present day Mexico, Southern California, south Texas, almost all of New Mexico and Arizona, and all the Central American countries with the exception of British Honduras (Belize)

Description: -

Aboriginal Malays (Orang Asli) began moving down the Malay peninsula from southwestern China about 10,000 years ago. The peninsula came under the rule of the Cambodian-based Funan, the Sumatran-based Srivijaya and the Java-based Majapahit empires, before the Chinese arrived in Melaka in 1405. Islam arrived in Melaka at about the same time and spread rapidly. Melaka's wealth soon attracted European powers, and the Portuguese took control in 1511, followed by the Dutch in 1641.

In 1802, the Sultan of Johor, uniting with the Sultans of the other seven Malay states, succeeded in removing the Dutch from Melaka. The federation they formed thus began to take shape and a united Malay Peninsula was formed.

With the full knowledge that Melaka had fallen due to technological backwardness, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong; Sultan Abu Bakar promoted education in his people; and even took advantage of new British developments by forming an alliance with the British. The discovery of extremely large tin deposits in the peninsula's western valleys attracted many traders and greatly profitted the Malay States. With the money gained, Sultan Abu Bakar imported skilled people from Europe to educate the Malays both in terms of industrialisation and in military.

Three generations - nearly a century - after unification, the Federated Malay States are at the forefront of technology in the region. The economy is booming due to the tin trade as well as the traditional entrepot role which Melaka played. However, jealous neighbours - most notably the Republic of Peace and Bugis Empire - as well as other European empires look greedily towards the 'Pearl of the Orient'.

Portrait of Sultan Yusof Hakim ibni Almarhum Sultan Ibrahim - Yang di-Pertuan Agong of the Federated Malay States

The current Yang di-Pertuan Agong of the FMS is Sultan Yusof Hakim; who is also Sultan of Johor. Due to Johor's role and hegemon during the recapture of Melaka in 1802, the other seven states (Melaka is a protectorate of Johor) defer to him as the 'Agong', literally chief.

Map of the Federated Malay States, showing state borders and the federal capital, Johor Bharu

The federal government and state governments have clearly defined powers and these powers are set in the Perlembagaan Persekutuan or 'Federal Constitution'. The Perlembagaan provides the federal government with powers of external affairs, defense, internal security, interstate justice and disputes, federal citizenship, finance, commerce, industry and transportation. Parallel to, and, on occasion, interlocking with, the federal institutions, each of the nine states also has its own local government. Although all have expanded significantly as a result of the country's growth over the last 96 years, these differ in size and complexity from state to state, depending on a variety of factors such as population, area, and degree of development.

Malay custom is such, that the people expect to have free access to their Sultan, and that he should hold a frequent and open majlis, council, in which his subjects could voice their opinions.

Nation Name: The Holy Imperial Kingdom of Mecca
Age: Late-Industrial Age
Army: Gigantic
Navy: Large
Government: Absolute Monarchy
Religion: Islam
Economy: The economy is dwinlding, what was once a bustling industrial and mercantile economic system seems to be in decay.
Description: So one quite knows when but some ime in the early 17th century an Arab revolt occured in Mecca. Strong peoples of muhammed quickly over ran the Arabian peninsula as well as Yemen and Oman. The Ottoman Empire, seeing this new threat, invaded the small Empire. They were utterly destroyed. The Arabs flew north using mostly mounted tactics they quickly bled into Iraq, Syria and Turkey itself. On December 6th, 1654 they laid seige to Constantinople. After a bloody battle the Turks surrendered. The Arabs gained all the Balkan territory of the Ottomans as well as any other Mesopotamian states under Ottoman vassal. Then in 1765 the Arabs were thrown into an industrial revolution as the economy boomed. The military arm of the nation struck out, Persia, Egypt, Libya the Punjab all became parts of the Great Islam. The monarchy became the absolute rulers, second only to Allah himself. After the great russian war the Arabs were Given the greater caucas mountains including georgia, armenia and chechnya. The Holy Empire was at it's highest point in 1856 when the Austrian Empire tried to seize more Balkan land. The Arabs responded by putting all of Hungary, Romania and translyvania under their brutal thumb. But now, in 1898, the Empire seems to be in decline. The aristocracy wont beleive it, but the poorest men in the Empire will, they know the hunger and the disease, it is only a matter of time until the Empire crumbles.

OOC: You know, I DID claim the Great Lakes Region... :p Hope you don't mind Jason.

Democratic Republic of Michigamme
Age: Late Industrial
Army: Small
Navy: Small
Government: Representative Democracy
Religion: 45% Protestant, 39% Native, 10% Catholic
Economy: Largely Manufacturing

Description: Michigamme (translating near directly to "Between the Lakes") is a rather small nation, however, it is decently powerful especially in terms of industrial power, and naval power on the Great Lakes.

Controlling the lands areound Lake Superior, the Eastern Shore of Lake Huron, a bit of the southern Peninsula (to secure the straits of Mackinac), Wisconsin, and deep into Minnesota to the Mississippi, Michigamme is focused around the southern shore of Superior, which has grown highly industrialized in the past few years. There are masses of natural resources, especially copper mines throughout Minnesota and Western Michigamme proper, Iron mines in central Michigamme proper, lead in Wisconsin, and of course bountiful forests that stretch as far as the eye can see.

The natural resources might have been exhausted earlier, if not for the unusual culture of Michigamme. The nation is a result of strange cultural fusion between the Native population and the European settlers, that by now almost everyone is very mixed. Some claim ancestry from a new race, Michigan's own race, but most deride these people as virulent nationalists.

The nation is primarily secular, it has to be, with the mixing bowl of native religions and Christianity. The economy is focused on the manufacturing cities, but also from massive exports of copper and lumber, especially to the Empire of America.

Recent history is very jumbled. They have managed to secure most of what they claimed, albiet with a medium sized wqar against the small Hudson Bay colony of Britain, securing a northern coast. They have also fought several wars with the Empire of America, which is rather ironic (considering their trading relationship), and has led to an odd affair, all in all... The nation to their west has mostly been at peace with them (I'm waiting for Jason to describe it, since I don't want to spoil it too much for him).

With all these neighbors and rivals, Michigamme created a highly trained, small army which could be deployed rapidly anywhere in the nation by a sophisticated railroad network and seapower. Their navy is unmatched on the Great Lakes, with many of the latest in ship designs steaming the lakes, and with control over some of the most important strategic points, like the canal locks at Sault Ste. Marie and the straits at Michilimackinac, they dominate it easily. Some even talk of a new ship design... the drreadnought... Time will see if anything comes of this flourishing nation.

***

Below is a map of Michigamme, effective control is outlined by the black border, the red slashed area marks disputed territory with the Empire of America that is effectively under control of the Empire. This also has province names.

OOC: Why are so many people presuming that the history is the same until the 19th century? I hope this one is allowed...

Advice - keep a timeline, a summary-like timeline so that its easier to understand what exactly is going on.

IC:

Holy Russian Cesarate
Age: Late Industrial Age
Army: Gigantic
Navy: Small
Government: Divine Monarchy
Religion: Timurid Christianity
Economy: Mostly Agrarian, Growing Industrialization

Description:

The Mongols, when they built their empire, barely had a strong cultural identity and took up religions of the conquered peoples. The Golden Horde was no difference - Khan Sartak, in his lenghty reign (in OTL, he only ruled for a year, if not less), merely sped up the inevitable process of the Mongol conversion to Christianity in Russia. The "Mongol Constantine", however, feared dependancy on the Byzantines if he was to convert to Orthodox Christianity altogether, and so instead he imposed Nestorian Christianity on his fledging nation. Overtime, the Mongols and the Russians merged into a single Khanate, up to a point at which a half-Mongol, half-Russian, Timur, became Khan in 1455. He turned the Golden Horde and its Russian vassals into a single state formally, creating the Holy Russian Khanate, and also changed Nestorian Christianity into the "Kievan-Rite" or "Timurid" Christianity, which basically was the same, but confirmed the Holy Russian Khan as the Head of Religion AND State in Russia, basically the link between God and his new chosen people, the "Russians" (as by then many Mongols associated themselves with Russia more then they did with Mongolia - cultural assimilation, again). Timur was not known as the Great just for that, though - he crushed the various rebels and Swedes and Lithuanians and the Teutons, and established firm control as far as river Lena. His successors expanded eastwards, built up their army, and defeated all the various Catholic crusaders. The crusading movement was broken in mid-16th century, amidst the Religious Wars throughout Europe, but the Russians were too weak at the moment due to a civil war to exploit it. As 17th century came, the Russian armies, led by Sartak IV, crushed the resurgent Ottoman Empire, enabling the Arabic rebels to replace it as the Middle Eastern hegemon whilst taking for themselves Cesar-Gorod (previously Constantinople). This allowed Sartak to claim the title of Holy Russian Cesar, which eventually replaced the Holy Russian Khan is the formal title.

Yet after this high peak, Russia began to stagnate, incapable rulers failed to exploit the European weakness and Europe succesfully emerged from the Religious Wars. The defeat in the Great Baltic War, resulting in the loss of the Baltic Sea islands to Britain and the reduction of the Baltic Sea Fleet to a laughable size, was an awakening call in 1809 - and an even greater one came when huge territories were lost after the war with Arabia. Since then, the Cesarate began trying to renew its power, to reform, to modernize. Thus far, the modernization (and industrialization) was painfully slow. The Arabic stagnation and civil war only barely allowed the conquest of numerous northern Arabic territories in 1874. So, in 1892, a new Cesar, Kabalyk I, came to power. He proved a capable ruler, and managed to accelerate the industrialization, but it still is far from complete, HRC still is quite backwards. The future will show if the Cesarate will rise to greater glory or if it is doomed to fall.

(Territory: OTL Russian Empire minus Primorye and minus Central Asia except Kazakhstan in the east, in Europe controls OTL plus East Prussia, Galicia, Hungary and the eastern half of the Balkans including Constantinople. Oh, and Western Armenia!)

(DARN, Communisto, didn't notice what you wrote. I think some correction is in order, for either side here... I think its about like this, there was a civil war in Arabia and several northern territories gained into Russo-Arabic War were taken back by Russia. Or somesuch.)

I split from the Dutch invasion of Malaya.. ;) Just a bit later from your own split.. Haha.

Nation Name: Republic of Peace
Age: Late Industrial
Army: Small (very high quality fanatics, for defensive purposes only)
Navy: Medium (mainly used for defense and pirate hunting)
Government: Theocratic Republic
Religion: 99% Zen Buddhism
Economy: Mostly merchantile, goods from Annam & Siam can be found at most every port in the world

Description: Following the teachings of Buddha and at the urge of several enlightened monks, the rulers of both Annam and Siam abdicated their throne, abolished their monarchies, united both countries, and proclaimed a representative republic in which the teachings of Buddhism would stand strong. War was banned, welfare and spirituality was introduced. The crime rates dropped significantly, and for the first time ever, there was reigning peace and serenity in southeast Asia. The population is happy, and stand together as brothers and sisters.

After a few decades of progressive reforms and ideals, the RP (Republic of Peace) has spread its culture and ideas to the rest of the world, while remaining intact from subverting to any foreign influence. The RP's economy also transformed almost overnight, once the rest of the world got a few hints of what goods it could export.

A new capital was erected near the delta of the Mekong River (Saigon). It was simplistic yet modern. The new capital quickly became a center of trade, learning, and culture, and represented the epitome of Buddhist civilization.

((Territory includes whatever territories Annam and Siam had, so basically Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and east and south parts of Burma))

das: If you think that the Europeans OTL would have formed a fusionist state in Michigan, you're, frankly, wrong. :p

I'm not sure WHERE my history diverges, all I can say is that it is a mix of mainly French, Viking, and Irish with Native Americans like the Ojibwa, the Ottowa, and the Potowatomi.

There needs to be more uniformity in our stories, like where does history diverge (if we are following history at all), and who did what in the past.

Now, if anyone would take notice, I have quietly edited the "republic of peace" into my jealous neighbour list in my nation description.. :D

Haha, what do we have to be jealous of? We're on par with you and plus we're peaceful :)

We can't exactly say WHERE history diverged, so let's just say a farmer picked a different suitior to marry his daughter to in 3000 BCE in Mesopotamia, causing a whole different series of world events to happen. Make it up as you go along, but as far as I can tell, most of the general world pattern is the same as OTL. There's a few large differences in political entities, but for the most part the powers that be seem roughly the same as they usually would be.

Well... How would I know? You and your weird Chan Buddhism. :crazyeye:

Yes, Chan is the proper term for Zen. Zen is actually a Japanese bastardisation of the original Chinese word.. :p

"But Mr. President, the Mexicans have only been nothing but friendly after the First Texan war. Why does there have to be more bloodshed?" The Prime Minister asked, being careful to remain respectful to the powerful autocrat. President Lincoln paced the throneroom, his steps echoing off of the cold stone floor. He took another puff from his cigar.

"The Mexicans subjugate a people who are very much like ourselves. The Texans are without freedom, and are without nationhood. Mexico has passed its limits." the President replied, setting the cigar down in the cyrstal ashtray. Feeling the time was right, he opened the hinged doors and stepped onto the balcony. The massive crowd that had gathered in front of the Capital cheered enthusiastically for their leader of twenty years. Lincoln calmed them with a lowering of the hand, and spoke into the microphone.

"My People, the Mexicans believe they can trot over peoples rights. They believe the Texans to be less valuable to the state. They believe that the American People will not support itself. We are here to prove them wrong! I have assembled the Grand Army of America, and we shall liberate the Texans from their oppressors!!" Not even waiting for the crowd's response, Lincoln turned and reentered the Capital. He could here the crowd going wild in the back.

Sam was not used to leaving his small town in Appalachia. He never even dreamed of traveling when he joined the army, he was told that he would remain guard of the region. But here he was, on the steaming train, going full speed to New Orleans. He was sharing a bench with people he didnt know, and was eating food he had never tasted before. A part of him was excited, but the other just wanted to go home where everything was familiar.

ooc: just a little something to start the game off :). btw, here is a map of North America so far as best as I can do. If you want to add your country to the map, do it yourself :).
