Right now we can trade for Portuguese ivory or Mayan fur. They'll both accept currency (of course). If we don't want to give up a tech for simply a luxury, Portugal will want wines and 11gpt while the Mayans will take iron and wines. Any interest/other deals?

I say take the Mayan trade, currency for furs. It's not longer a monopoly and we should trade it ASAP, as it is known to a few civs now.

As for the Ivory, we are a planning war with the Portuguese by year 0. I think we should avoid that rep hit. We will conquer the Ivory anyway, along with The Pyramids and The Statue of Zues. If the the situation changes and war with the Portuguese is held off for at least the 20 turns, the why not make the trade while we can.

iron is far more valuable and even more so for the war with dutch right? because we have to keep producing swords so i say take the portugal one and giving mayans 2 luxuries for one isn't that a bit to much? but 11gpt would lessen our income(obviously) and it might give us minus gold(i dont know how much gpt we are making)

I probably should have mentioned this: we have one extra source of iron. I would never think of selling our only iron at a time like this!

In half a dozen turns we will have incense and spices for free. At that point we will be able to set the lux slider to zero. We don't need another lux atm IMO. I also worry about our trade route being cut by stray enemy units. If we can use currency to get literature, and gold, then maybe we can use it for a lux afterwards since having the trade route cut will not kill our reputation.

I don't understand the reluctance to trade iron. We wouldn't give away our only source, that's for sure. And if we want to increase the chances of other civs going to war, we need to keep them supplied with weapons. The Mayans are unlikely to take an agressive stance if all they have is archers and eveyone else around them has pikemen. Like mad-bax said, we'll have our own luxuries soon, so we might not want to trade for those, but if we can get techs or a good amount of gold, we can send iron to some far off civs and encourage military build up on the other side of the world.

In the Official Government thread, RegentMan states that he believes that the trade route goes through the Harbour of Bangalore. This means that unless we build a harbour ourselves first, we will lose the route if we are at war with India. At some point not too long away I believe we will want to claim at least the 3 northern Indian cities. We do not want to ruin our reputation at such an early point in the game, so resource/luxury trades will have to wait until we secure our own harbour and route to parts north.

Well, if we extend our peace treaty with India, then our trade route will be secure. I like the idea of arming the Maya with iron, as LeeT911 states. We'd get a luxury out of it, and we'd get a greater chance at a war "over there." I'd prefer twenty turns of this over having spices and incense that can be disconnected with a single click of the pillage button.

i agree with Lee and trading the iron. if we are planning to get MA's with a lot of civs, they're going to need weapons. i think we should definitely trade with maya. we will capture the ivory from portugal, so they're is no need to trade with them. also, trading with them now what make no sense, because war will stop the deal. we might as well get the furs from maya.

I wouldn't trade a resource until we have a harbour in the north and the south. WE can trade away iron, and the Maya are probably the Civ we are least likely to go to war with. If we can give iron, and currency for Mono or Feudalism then fine. I doubt we will have the option by the time we have two harbours though.

Considering that we may be going to war with Portugal within 20 turns, getting into a trade deal with them, especially involving gpt, is a bad idea.

It is too much of a risk for us to do any of these trades ATM. Just one wrong thing could stop us from ever trading GPT with other nations, even though we did nothing wrong.

I agree with Classical Hero. We are also considering signing some MAs to get the other half of the world engaged in war to stunt their growth, which possibly might impact some trade routes.
