We have no idea when the game's coming out, and until it actually does, there will be much we won't know about it. However, there's been enough that I can give at least a a brief glimpse into what's in store for HOF-IV:
1-The fate of HOF III:
  • The start of IV will not end III!
  • As a matter of fact, so long as I'm running HOF-III and games are being submitted, this will remain open for business. After all, CivII's GOTM is still going!
  • I will still continue to update this HOF at least twice a month, although as traffic adjusts over to IV, front page news about the updates may end. If traffic in III drops low enough, I might even start updating the tables with every game clearance.
2-The start of HOF-IV:
  • Thunderfall has graciously offered the position of HOF-IV executive leadership to me, and I have accepted. He's commented on more than one occasion in recent months about how impressed he is with the amount of games you all play, how well you play them, and how very little work it is for him to be the dedicated moderator of this forum. :goodjob:
  • Dianthus has already agreed (some months back) to serve as my first IV-staff member. I sleep easier at night knowing this, as we certainly wouldn't be where we are without him (either from staff contributions, or personal projects such as CRpSuite and Mapfinder). It's very beneficial having someone around who knows what a schema is.
  • I can't make it an iron-clad promise, but I'm planning on having HOF-IV open for business the day the game is released!
  • The initial HOF-IV, however, will probably not be full tables, but instead just top ten score lists for each difficulty. There will also probably not be many, if any, rules to start with. What we'll be doing is quite simply getting to know the game. In particular for the HOF, we'll be looking for bugs and exploits and deciding rules of fair play.
  • Once we've gone through the adjustment phase (and had a patch or two), the full tables will open, as will the evil sequel to the Quartermaster's Challenge.
3-The Cartographer's Challenge:
  • As per the Quartermaster's Challenge, the Cartographer's Challenge Award will go to players who complete each of the qualifying events.
  • Definite events:
    • "Histographic"-As long as there's Civilization games to play, worlds will be filled, dominated, succumbed and sucked for score until the end of time. At this time, though, I have yet to come up with a good name for the milking event as all my ideas have been udderly ridiculous.
    • Machiavelli-This will again be based on fastest finish games of the fastest finish victory conditions.
    • League of Nations-Players must submit at least one HOF win using each of the 19 civilizations.
  • Probable events:
    • "Difficulty*thlon-Currently known as the Octathlon. I've not seen any information regarding Civ4 difficulty levels, nor how many, but it's a safe assumption there will be multiple difficulties in the traditional Civilization sense.
    • *Map*thlon-Currently known as the Pentathlon. Again, various mapsizes not confirmed, but assumable.
  • There will likely be other events. They will likely not be kind.

Congrats on the Civ IV leadership role. League of Nations sounds interesting!

How about a League of Nations for Civ III?
All 31 (or 32) might be too much.
Perhaps divide into two halves--The American League and The National League.
:)

I almost did put that event into Quartermaster's, but it wouldn't feel right without requiring all the Civilizations. And 30+ was just too much to require given how little time was left before IV.

Have you seen Civrules latest update on Civ4?
I dip into that forum every few days, mainly out of curiousity, but it's hard for me to sift through and read.

The only time I click over there is when I see CivRules name as the last post. I figure there is prolly some decent info from him.

I found this interesting:

The Speed of Victory

It all comes down to this: Achieving it against the AI earns you ego. Achieving it against another player earns you respect.

The length of games will be reduced from 550 turns to 400. Some reports say that you will be able to start in any era you wish

There will be three game speeds: Quick (mostly for Multiplayer), Medium (a bit faster than Civ III, 15-20 hours of gameplay) and Epic (a bit slower than Civ III)

The Victory Conditions will be: Spaceship, Conquest, Domination, Culture (with 3 cities with near perfect culture) and Diplomatic

From what I have read in other threads the Quick/Medium/Epic will change how many turns there is in the games too.. with epic ones being longer than 550 turns (where did they get 550 from btw? civ3is 540 turns) and Medium is 400 turns

Well, someone's trying to sell Multiplayer. If they took out the word ego and replaced it with self-respect, I might could agree with that whole statement. One of the things I love about the HOF and GOTM is that I can play by myself, and yet against other players at the same time.

Now those two are going to be interesting to figure out in relation to the HOF, especially in regards to required game settings. Luckily, thats not a can of worms I have to deal with today.

My concern for the HoF (which I will start when CivIV comes out), is equality in expansion packs and patches. When the game is first released, it may be mired it bugs and exploits that won't be caught until later. I don't think it's fair to compare diffent patch versions anymore than it's fair to compare Vanilla vs C3C. I think the HoF should compensate for different versions.

The CivIII HoF has picked up steam in participation in the last few months and interest will fall once CivIV is released. I wouldn't expect these changes in the HoF now (it is almost hindsight), but for CivIV, it would be great to be prepared to set up different comparisons between versions/patches.

I was about to say something very similar.
When there is patching or new ruling, you get problems about competing against games using rules that can no longer be used.
Either you scrap the old games when you change rules or there is a new significant patch, or you end up with games that can become unbeatable, if they use a "feature" that disappears with a patch later or a rule.

I think it would be a good idea to spend the first few months discussing an acceptable ruleset for HOF 4 and seeing how the patch situation is looking, or at least advising early submitters that it is possible that the HOF gets restarted...

Sounds good for IV. I also like league of nations for III, but only because I've already been sort of working on it while aiming for quartermaster's challenge. I'd have to check, but I think I'm at about 14 or 15 civs used. I've had about 8 weeks or so with no civ at all, time to work on the withdrawal symptoms and get some #1 spots back.
