After watching the new movie based on the Crusades, "Kingdom of Heaven," I have decided that this summer, I will open a NES based on the Crusades.

When will this be opened?

Some time in June. I will open up a preview thread with rules, map, and what not.

So post suggestions and what ever else you want to in this thread.

No reservations.

Should this NES start before or after the First Crusade, or before the Third or Second?

I myself like the Third Crusade...

Will the map be entire europe, with players as rulers of nations or will it be the area of the holy land itself, with players as knights/generals? i myself like the third crusade more since there's already a western presence during that time, and it's when the most famous people showed up there

I don't want to include much of Europe in the map, because I'd rather not have the NES become Euro-centered. I think that I'll show some parts of Italy and Greece, but the map will mostly be focused on the Holy Land and the Middle East. Turkey will be there too, of course.

Yeah, that's why I like the Third Crusade too.

I'm thinking about starting it about four years before the start of the Third Crusade, probably around 1185. I really want to include Raynald of Châtillon in the NES, so... :p

I'd suggest having the borders of the map as follows:
-North: Black Sea/Caucasus
-West: Cyrenaica / Ionian coast of Greece
-East: Iran, ~as far as Tehran
-South: southern Egypt / Hedjaz (as far south as Medina, maybe?)

Or keep it smaller, restricted to Palestine, Syria, Egypt, Asia Minor (plus Constantinople) if you want.

I too like the Third Crusade; it'll make for the best game, what with the Crusader States already established, and characters like Saladian, Barbarossa, and Richard the Lionheart.

Are you going to have it be a largely tactical game, like the WWI NES that was up a while ago? With the European nations not on the map, that might make the most sense, with European kings leading stateless armies on campaign.

Suggestions:

1. Have people be able to play both christians and muslims, but no one can start out as a king or sultan.

2. Have it more story based than stat based, and make the average player be a person, who leads armies and can try and establish his/her own kingdom if they wish.

3. Set it at the beginning. I know that having established states might make it more fun for people, but I like creating my own history, myself, and if we set it around the first crusade, then we can rewrite history from the start.

You're right, it would make the most sense for it to be a tactical game. But unfortunately, I don't know all too much about medieval tactics, so that might be a problem. But I'll try to learn as much as I can and hopefully put together a good NES.

@North King: Yeah, I think I'll have the rulers be NPCs. The players would be barons, and their actions would be relatively independent. But they still must be loyal to their King.

I think I've decided on a date. 1187, right after the defeat of the Kingdom of Jerusalem at the Battle of Hattin.

The Third Crusades begin in 1189.

You can try reading Liddel-Hart, he has some stuff on Frankish and Arab tactics and strategy.

But, I personally really don't like Middle Ages (Central and Eastern Eruope not included), especially the crusades.

i call the childrens crusade! ;)

Really, this is a very interesting idea. Hope your interest doesnt wane between now and launch date.

bah!, kingdom of heaven SUCKED!

There was not Alamo style defense of Jerusalem....... Saladin came and took it, and decided not to kill the people there to make a point.

then they never showed the actual battle of Hattin!, the just showed the men marching, and then they skipped to where all crusaders were dead.

so, they sikpped perhaps the greatest Islamic victory over Christians and made up a non existing alamo defense.

yeah, but the sad thing is that people that went to see it (young high school and even college students) think that what they saw is historically correct. :(

anyhow, in the nes, perhaps start at capture of Jerusalem by Saladin, then you can have Barbarossa and the Lionheart start to recruit men and move to the Mid east.

i'm pretty sure anyone playing Barbarossa/his subjects will take care to avoid bodies of water of any kind

@Stalin: Saladin didn't kill all the people of Jerusalem. He let them all live, historically, that is true. He did make try to make a point; he showed mercy to the Christians, the mercy the Christians did not show to the Muslims in 1099.

Anyway... you guys won't be able to play Barbarossa directly, but as one of his generals, can you influence him not to go a certain route? ;)

uh? you said exaclty the same thing i did :crazyeye:. is true he didnt killed the people, i am mad cus there was no alamo defense of Jerusalem.

Oh, I thought you were saying that Saladin not killing the people was an attempt for the movie to be politically correct.
