SGOTM7 - Always War - Ottomans. Maintenance Thread.

Welcome to the SGOTM Maintenance thread. The purpose of this thread is to give you somewhere to post about non-spoiler issues relating to the game. It is a way of communicating to the rest of the players outside your team, and with the staff about matters that affect your team or everone. You can post about bugs, rule clarifications, problems with the roster etc.

OK so here is the start.

The map is handbuilt, and therefore may not have a standard configuration.

Please visit the following links to ensure that you are adequately prepared for this game. The SGOTM Reference thread contains all the files and links you need to install the small mod for PTW/C3C and rather larger mod for vanilla. There are test saves too so you can check your installation.

This Months' sponsored variant is Always War Deity (AWD) the rules for which are as follows.

1. You must declare war on each Civilisation by the end of the turn you make that contact.
2. You must remain at war with each Civilisation until the end of the game, or until that Civilisation is destroyed.
3. You may trade with a Civilisation on the turn you make contact and before declaring war, but you may not establish any embassies.
4. No turn based (gpt) deals are permitted.
5. You must win by Domination.

Note: PTW and Vanilla players are not permitted to leader rush Great Wonders Before the year 1000BC for this game.

Spoiler information will absolutely NOT be tolerated in this thread.

Finally, have fun everyone. The game should be a challenge whatever your level. :)

The first discussion I want to bring up is whether or not team Own (my team) and team Darkness want to play AWE instead. I'm happy either way. As I have said I do not expect this game to play any harder than AWE anyway.

IF both teams want to play AWE then I will switch some players around to even them up a bit. If there is anyone at that point that wants out of these two teams to play in the Deity version, then I will sort you out. I'm not trying to MAKE anyone do anything. I'm just trying to prevent games of 30 turn duration. :mischief:

It is important that this is resolved as I need to generate the saves tonight or tomorrow, and it is not a perfectly straightforward process for me - I need to do typing and from there it is a slippery slope. :p

Not really bothered, but I'd prefer AWD as it will be a steeper learning curve - and the prime reason I want to play is to learn as much as possible.

Playing AWE is alright for me.

@ M-B, any news on restricting the spectators? ............No rush though we have til Monday.

Would the AWE teams be eligible for an award (laurel or spoon)?

  • If not, even if I knew that I couldn't compete for a laurel I would still play the sponsored variant instead of whimping out. Then you just play to play instead of play to compete even if it is to see who doesn't get last place.
  • If so, then that could be unfair (I hate that word BTW) to the other teams.
I say let everyone play the sponsored variant. I have a feeling that the less experienced teams will be a bit more cautious than they normally would and that could help prevent 30-turn complete games.

AWD might be too steep a learning curve. For players comfortable at regent/monarch, AWE is already a very big step.

IMHO it's not the eligibility for an award that should be the main focus for these training games. The focus should be on improving playing skills in an interesting variant game... (including my own skills ;) )

I didn't realize that these were going to be training games. If that was the intent, then I agree fully. I thought that you and Mad-Bax would be guiding these guys to victory. :p I agree that going from Monarch or Regent to any Diety game is a big jump.

I take back what I said and really have no opinion the matter at the moment. I just think that the spoons are a cool award and wanted the newbies to at least have a chance for them. It was kind of disappointing that no one lost SGOTM6. Games where no one loses IMO are not hard enough, but I still very much appreciate the work that the staff is doing.

I would like to stay at AWDeity. I am already comfortable at Emperor, and really would like to think, at least for a little while, that team Own can win. Plus, because it is a S GOTM, many of my/our mistakes will probably be avoided by not playing fast and having others to consult with. Unless something really weird happens, I cannot imagine losing after 30 turns. That's just me. ;-) Even if we don't win, I can see a top 5 finish.

These two teams don't have to play AW, it could be just a normal Deity game.

I'm remembering clearly the SGOTM2 where our team had played AWM instead of simply monarch level game and it was of very similar difficulty and finish date. Despite there were a number of new players there.

I think perhaps we should play 5 turns at a time instead of 10, and think carefully in between each player. If we act as a team and discuss what we want to do we should be victorious.

I fully agree with drugged_unholy. That sounds like a good way for us who are less experienced on higher levels to learn something. Also making up the complete strategy together with others sounds pretty interesting as well.

That is the primary reason I wanted to try a SG in the first place.

The team threads have been posted.

Note that due to a slip up on my part Own is on the team of his name and XoThErMiK is on team Obormot.

At the moment I am generating deity saves for all teams. If team Darkness wants an Emperor save then I will generate a new save for them.

The game goes live on Monday at which point the saves become automatically available.

I strongly suggest the team captains PM their team members and ask them to report in to the team thread. If people appear to be AWOL then we can make some adjustments to suit.

Have fun everybody. This is the bit I hate....

A conquest victory would be treated as a loss for the purposes of SGOTM. Only the prescribed victory condition is recognised by the server as a victory.

Midnight Sunday night..... If I get the time to generate them.. It's been a busy weekend. SGOTM7 and GOTM43 and the results thread and trying to sort out teams and oh yes there's that thing I laughingly refer to as real life. I used to know someone who had one. ;)

Go Mad-bax go!

I for one fully appreciate all the time and effort you take in getting this thing going each and everytime.

Keep up the very good work and I am really looking forward to this.

In fact I'm so excited my son just told me to stop being silly

Melifluous

I have a question to this variant. I did not find an answer to this quickly and the game starts tomorrow. The turn I make contact I must declare war this is clear to me, but on C3C deity I experienced that the AI does not contact me, even if their units pass my territory. So, now I have to contact any unit visible, trade and declare war ? On lower levels the AI contacts me almost every time in the beginning, but on deity they hardly do. I have to check the foreign advisors each round until I know all rivals ?
