Being a noobie to NES ... I have a question ... and I'm also a little unsure as to how I word this without offending  ... here we go anyway ...

I hope that this doesn't affect my NES rep (not that I have really got one) ... but talking to others I feel that there is a real issue of games starting and then being stalled with no information explaining the reasons ... so all the players concerned are left hanging ... not good guyz ... in fact it is a strong irritant

I would assume that surely there would be an etiquette and responsibility for the mods to inform players of delays ... I appreciate that alot of creativity and time is required ... (just like a DM in a role playing game ... which i in youth did) ... and that RL in all its random glory is the deciding factor ... however I see it as inexcusable that so many games that I've checked the threads have died without explanation from the mod ... and then i see that avatar forming numerous other games which eventually also share the same fate ...

So I ask how many times have you started a game only to be disappointed by the early demise of a game that you were getting into?

Oh and please no names ... just after a general feeling ... which the mods will take on board ... :D

Too long a list, sorry. Yes, few NESes live long, though some do.

i always make up crazy stuff before i close my neses :)

plus most of them make it past the 20th update

i think the problem with your question is that you ask it with the assumption that its the mod's fault for the game closing.
if noone has sent/posted orders since the last update, then clearly no one is interested in the game and there is no one to explain TO, why the game is closing. its because all the players have abandoned it.

i voted for 60% and i think that's about right for MOD closed games that i've been in, but there have also been a few that have gotten killed off by the players not caring enough to follow on their commitments (ie they join but then never even look at the thread again)

Good point RoddyVR ... However in that case the mod would be actively posting and asking why this was happening ... and then I assume officially ending the thread with a notice ...
I hope that this is not construed as a mod bashing/baiting session ... I am just venting a bit (at no one in particular) as I have noticed a trend ... which is a pity since NES seems to be a great concept ...

That trend, alas, is widespread.

To me, players leaving is only half a reason. I preffer a small group of DEDICATED players in a NES that is interesting to ME as well to a horde of players that say "grow economy" and drop out/rejoin at the first occasion, or, what's worse, begin ruining the fun by throwing out all semblances of realism. Especially if they are in a NES that has become boring to me.

About half the time, much more for my own NESes, and I apologize to everyone for it.

About 90%, but I joined a lot of failed NESes. I guess the longest-living current ones are Goober's, the old StGNES where someone invaded Germany, and Azale's. It seems as if stalin likes nukes too much...

EDIT: w00t! 750th Post!...that was a little OT. Sorry.

I see a couple of MAIN reasons for a mod dying

"Event Update"
Stat updates
Diplo Dies out.
It never even Starts. (read properly)
Oh and RL stuff.

Which brings me to the next point, Has anyone tried to do a multi-mod NES? Or even devise a system for it? get say three people. (European, 2 American) to mod. Providing around the clock coverage....

Yeah People should try think on that one.

The mods would use up huge amounts of PM space to try to even coordinate activity. It would be a pain to organize for not as much benefit. Doesn't seem too easy.

Plus, I'm in Europe and up at about midnight. It's the evening in eastern America, and early afternoon in California, and early morning in Beijing. Some people are inhuman...

Lack of interest from players is a main reason of NESes dying.

For example, in my own (failed) NES, the main players - ie: the one with BIG battles to mention did not send orders after constant reminders, and so it died - or at least went into hibernation. (Hint: BananaNES will be up again soon)

Regarding co-mods, Gelion and I are working on something to that effect, more news on that coming later.

Can I take one of the bigger players then ;)

LoL
We'll see.
When i said 'soon', I sort of meant a few months.
LoL

First priority will be co-modding Nessos with Gelion.

I am not sure, but I am disappointed that the NESes that I enjoy, the modern-day ones, SINES, stGNESIV, etc. seem to die fast. But never mind, I rather enjoy modding. In fact, in some ways, i enjoy Modding more.

I intend to keep my NES going for as long as possible, although i do appreciate that all NESes die at some point, and am already planning my next one . . .

you heretic! we will burn you at the stake if that happens! (;))

march on Canda! Kill them all! Goober must die! (sorry Goobs, couldnt resist ;) )

now, so this is not completly off topic - first reason is mods making the rules too hard. For example there was a brilliant NES that someone started a while back where you played as a mercenary group in the modern world, but it died after one update because to keep track of millions of dollars, all the equipment, soldiers, etc. was not realistic for the mod to do.

Sometimes, interest just isnt there. When I was modding my NES, it was fun at first, but then I got bored of it. It might have done with the fact that I wasn't doing something that was my own idea. Anyways, I plan to mod again soon, but I am still formulating an idea in my head....

For some reason, playing in NESing has slowly become less appealing. Modern NESes tend to come with lot of secret diplomacy, backhand deals, treason, and all that - all of which I hate as it just tends to turn players paranoid and instead of having fun, you just worry through the whole NES. Although ironically, I dont like playing ancient NESes much....

:goodjob: I agree completely aside from the less appealing part.

what on earth are you two talking about? secret politics, backstabbing, etc. is where its at! Its definatly more fun that plain old build up - fight - build up - fight - repeat until NES ends.

heh, not all of us are like you stormbringer. you DO the secret politics, backstabbing and etc and you always win if u put your heart into it. i would prefer a nice peaceful game of fight, build up, fight repeat :p
