Shall there be a earth map with historic start locations? Like we had in civ1 and civ2 but not civ3. I played a LOT on the earth map in both civ1 and civ2, actually much more then random map. So i hope civ4 shall have an earth map with historic starting locations.

Me too, and with realistic resource positioning. Like you i played more on the civ2 earth map than the random map (in fact i only played on the random map once.

I like the Earth Maps but surely you can find a user made Earth map for Civ3.

i have never played civ 1 or 2 but it would be fun to have a world with the real startiong locations and stuff.

I LOVE earth maps. very fun to play on

I agree with kolpo. I would really love it if Civ IV shipped with an official huge Earth map.

the only problem with realistic starting positions is that almost all civs will start one next to the other (europe), while some others will be nearly alone in a big continent. There would be no one in Australia. But if the map is larger, I'd really like it.

i dont like them cus ther soooo out of size, i hate being only able to fit 1 city, 2 at the most in italy...

I'm pretty sure there will be a map editor and/or earth map with Civ4.

However, initally, with only 18 civs, it will not be that play:able until the expansions comes around.

With the new city system (buildings placed on map, and not really staying in their own square, citys are more like counties ? and therefore fitting only 2 cities in your empire seems more ok in civ4 ?

I'm sure they'll include an Earth map, but probably not with historic start locations - as was stated, it would result in massive crowding in Eurasia, and little competition elsewhere.

Maybe once there are 40/50 some-odd civs, then a huge map with historic locations would work.

Earth maps make for a good time because you can relate them to real historic events. Thats why i like them.

if i recall the civ3 earth map given was pretty distorted and off. i mean, with all the great map makers out there, there r plenty of great earth maps, but i hope that they'll still package the game with some good real world maps.

In Civ3, the scenarios called TeTurkhan have the Earth Map, with 31 civilizations, with starting locations for lots of historic cities. This is the Civ scenario I play exclusively. I certainly hope that the most updated and improved version of TeThurkhan is included in the Civ4 game.

In the Teturkhan scenarios of Civ3, yes...Europe is crowded, but the trading possiblitities (for techs) are very considerable, allowing for fast advancement. The AI's are pretty stupid, actually, so once you learn the game mechanics, it becomes easier to deal with your computer opponents, and to start taking over their cities...ready-made for you!

I've only played SMAC before, but I always found that the random maps could be terrifically unfair, so I almost always end up using the official maps of Planet.

I'd love to see a full Earth map in Civ4 (as well as a map of Planet, just for fun!).

the only problem i can see with an earth nmap is that u KNOW what the world is like at the very beginning which early civs did not.....but i like the idea of civs being where they should be on an earth map...its just that exploration is a big part of the game for me- hate to give that up for historical placement
