Been awhile since we have one of this (excepting the WW2 one)... :cooool:

Procedures :-
1) A asks a question, the rest will try to answer.
2) A must confirm which answer is correct.
3) Person (say B) with confirmed correct answer then asks the next question.
4) A cannot play again until B's turn is over (to prevent the thread turning into a 2 person spam party).
5) Repeat.
6) If person asking question doesn't login to confirm answers within 72 hrs of his question being posted, any one can ask a new question.
7) If no one can answer question within 72 hrs or can't get the right one, questioner can ask again.
8) Preferably no Net or book searches.

First thread

Question 1 - Who were the Majapahit?

YNCS, I think we had already this question. Anyway here is my question:
In old times commander of enemy warships, if in neutral port, agreed to fight each other. This was called a Gentlemen´s fight. The last one occured in the 3rd quater of the 19th century. What was this fight?

Adler

P.S.: Another hint: the war in which the fight took place saw only few sea fights.

The USS Kearsage v. CSS Alabama off Cherbourg ?

Since Adler is asking the question I would guess it happened during the franco-prussian war in an american port involving a german and a french officer. I would guess the frenchman lost the duel... ;)

When I saw the original question, I figured that the Franco-Prussian War was the most likely candidate.

Since googling is allowed, I come up with the battle between the Meteor and the Bouvet off Havana.

I thought it wasn't. I never googled or wikied out answers and I'm fairly sure were not allowed to do it. Does anybody know?

I think the official ruling is that it is "discouraged".

I had googled out this answer after Alder put up the first hint but didn't say anything. In his second post he specifically said it was allowed so I posted what I had found.

I'm not sure I am right either. This does appear to have been the only naval engagement of the war outside of Europe so it seems like a pretty good bet.

Edit:

From Post #1: "Preferably no Net or book searches".
From Post #1002: "P.S.: Googling is allowed!"

It was the fight of the gunboat Meteor against the aviso Bouvet off Havanna in 1870. Both commanders agreed to fight against each other. Bouvet tried in this fight to ram the Meteor but did not hit the ship. Nevertheless the takelage of the German boat was destroyed in this attempt. Therefore the Meteor hit the Bouvet and destroyed their engine room. Meteor was now in advantage but because of sail parts at the propellers he (in the German Navy boats with a masculine name are called he) could not engage the enemy again before the Bouvet arrived Spanish waters. 2 Germans killed by rifle fire (while the ramming attempt) were the only fatalities in this fight. Kapitänleutnant von Knorr (later Admiral) got like some others of his crew the Iron Cross 2nd class and was promoted to Korvettenkapitän.
I allowed Googling because this question is very very special. I don´t think that anyone could have answered that without these researches. Also it is not forbidden generally.
Abegweit, your question.

Adler

Yes indeed. It was the old Micmac name for the island. They also called it Minagoo.

My family is from there.

Over to you.

Time for a picture association quiz then! As usual, I'm looking for the name of a person, and I will supply you with 3 (easy) pictures.

Martin Luther?
The first looks like the Wartburg, and the second could be Wittenberg. Dunno 'bout the third.
