Why Do Colonies Turn into Fortresses When City Expands Over Them

The AI likes to build fortresses on their colonies. When a city expands, the colony dies, but the fortress does not.

Well, technically, the convert from colonies to roads.

But yeah, no conversion from colony to fortress.

Correct. Fortress+colony looks like colony. If the colony is gone, the fortress is left, so you now see a fortress. Colonies do convert to roads. I think to RR if you can build them but not sure :)

I don't think I've ever built a colony. Am I a bad person? I've never felt the need to build one. Seriously, why would I? just build a city and get over with it. Am I missing something here?

You do need a road to the colony to benefit from it right?

nope not a bad person, I've only built a colony to that darn iron that is on the coast of the mointain rainge that needs a 4 cultre rank city to use it :)

I never build colonies. Much better to build cities. AI can't steal them without war.

Colonies are useful if you need a resource or luxury fast.
I don't want to wait for the settler to plant, rush the temple or library, then wait three more turns for expansion. I want to start that sword rush now!
I'll still plant the settler too, it's definately more secure, but sometimes timing is everything and colonies can give instant gratification.

Using colonies should be your last resort. They may be required if you cant build a city near the resource, ie the terrian is full of mountains or arctic terrain and that is the only one you can get a hold of. 99% of the time there are better alternatives to colonies.

YES!

Seriously, it is better to build a city, but building a colony is faster. And speed can be crucial!!!

Even though not frequently, I use colonies for cases such as:

- If you don't build cities too close, sometimes you can have a resource 2 tiles away from your new city (which has not expanded borders) and if it is vital, then I build a colony while the city doesn't grow. This is because I am obsessed about well aligned cities, I confess! :crazyeye:

- If the resource is too far away from my cities, I fear building a city there, so I build a resource until I can expand there or find an alternative.

- If the resource is to the North and I feel strategically important to expand South, I use colonies for getting the resource while I take my Settlers to the other way.

Building a colony roads the tile. Good for grabbing something like iron on a mountain when you need it in a hurry. It wastes a worker, but in an emergency...
