February 2007 Update: I've learned that most people don't read the long stuff I type, so here's a quick summary of the two downloads discussed here (with links to their CivFan download page):

Smiley Mood Badges For Your Citizens - Make it easier to see who is happy, who is sad and who is resisting! Never again have a smiling content person fool you into disorder!

Nationality Civ Color Flags For Your Citizens - Easily find foreign citizens in your cities. Great for warmongers needing to know how many and where their foreigners are. (Also has mood smilies.)

Unlike other smiley and flag mods I've seen, each mod includes files for all versions of Civ3 including the shipped PTW scenarios and C3C conquests (like DyP and Mesoamerica).

---------------

This isn't the first smiley popHeads mod by a longshot, but hopefully it's the most complete.

This mod includes epic smiley popHeads for vanilla Civ3 and Civ3 Conquests. (PTW uses whatever vanilla Civ3 is using.) It also has modified smiley popHeads for these PTW Scenarios installed with PTW: Ancient Mediterranean, Balancer and Double Your Pleasure. Now how much would you pay? Don't answer yet, because you also get mods for the Conquests in Conquests! (Oddly enough that's not a repeat.) 11 of the 13 Conquests have their own popHeads files, but upon further review some are copies so there are four unique popHeads in Conquests aside from the epic game.

Some of the Conquests use identical popHeads files, and not all Scenarios and Conquests have special popHeads, so there are only 9 different popHeads files to modify.

EDIT: Editing just to add the phrase "smiley mood badges" and "moodbadges" for the search feature. For more search engine fodder, these mood badges help differentiate happy, content, sad and resisting citizens (or "city workers") as well as providing nationality flags.

First link, no civ color flags. These are my favorite smileys so far. I've been using these since March for my epic games and decided to share them since I've had no usability issues and really like these smileys. Note that content citizens have no smiley--I figured they didn't need them because you never have to worry about them or count them. Resisters have this smiley: .

The following is with the civ color flags. I made sure I got some mixed-civ screenshots. On the right it's easy to spot the foreigners, but since the foreigners are the same culture group it would be very difficult to tell them apart from this view without the color flags. On the left the colors are very close and it's easier to tell by the appearance of the person. The flags cover up the faces when stacked, but not too badly. The foreigners on the left shot are the two at the top, the right lady in the 2nd row and the two fellows on the second-to-last row. Note that specialists have the civ color flags, too. I just made these and haven't played with them, but I experimented with several flag placements before deciding this was the least intrusive placement. (EDIT August 3 2005: Been playing with the civ color flags for a month. They bug me a bit from covering too much of the face, but it's really easy to see their nationalities which really helps during and after wars. If I try to hide the flag more it will disappear behind some of the heads. Guess you'll have to choose between aesthetics and information. Warmongers will probably prefer the flags while builders will propably want no civ flags.)

EDIT: Oops, looks like I goofed in the readme. The PTW Scenario popHeads mods are complete; the folder names in the zips are obvious, and the paths to install the file are correct in the readme.

In this readme an "epic" game means the game you get when you choose "New Game" from the startup screen. Other game types are PTW's "scenario" and C3C's "conquest". Some scenarios and conquests have their own popHeads.pcx file, but some use the epic game's popHeads.

BE SURE TO BACK UP YOUR ORIGINAL popHeads.pcx FILES! If you mess things up then uninstalling and reinstalling Civ3 should fix it, but that's no fun.

To install, copy the appropriate popHeads.pcx file to the appropriate directory. Civ3 and PTW use the same popHeads file. C3C introduces new specialists, so they have to be in the modified file or the game will crash when you try to assign a policeman or civil engineer.

The Balancer PTW Scenario seems to just have culture groups moved around from the epic popHeads. The Ancient Mediterranean and Double Your Pleasure scenarios have extra specialists as well as culture changes, so a crash is likely if you have the wrong file.

The C3C Conquests have rearranged culture groups and/or eras compared to the epic game but have the same specialists.
