In an effort to keep my Civ-Interest up I decided to throw down the gauntlet and challenge Denniz to another Domination SlugFest (no Superslug was not involved)

It has been decided that we will do Emperor Level (Denniz's doings) and Tiny Map size (My choice)

Any one else is welcome to join in in this challenge... I guess we can both use this thread to post about our games.

Mistfit slinks off to go get Map Finder started...

Hooray! You've gotta love some tiny dominations. I think the best doable date is in the 650 BC range.

I need a break from my huge deity. Count me in.

What is the prize for last place?

Well Im going to have to raise the bar so that this wont be so easy. This was the about the 7th start I generated and the second game played:

Domination limit was 318. I used 3 agricultural civs as the AI, and I think that worked well. No ToA, just joining workers, disbanding gallics, and whipping temples and settlers worked just as well. And the final:

I had particularly bad luck with the RNG, and my first 3 Gallics retreated twice and lost against Salamanca and 4 were felled by Mounted Warriors with no damage at all to the enemy. With better luck 750 BC is doable I think.

Hey 'Slug what about a biweekly or so HOF sponsored category (similar to this) to get the submissions up? Im sure if you post a set goal such as "Small Warlord Space" then you would probably get some submissions on the less populated tables. Has this been proposed before?

Edit: Anyone know why it isnt showing my city names at the bottom in the second pic? Is that a zoom bug?

This is a great idea :goodjob: Please don't choose Small Warlord Space though as I've just done one of those. :D

I'll see if I can find the time to try this. Domination isn't my thing but maybe I need more practice. 650BC is a good target-well done killer!

Wow! I did not expect this kind of response :goodjob:

Now I really have to sharpen my Domination Skills...

Unfortunately right now I'm kinda used to Chieftan so some replanning and test games will need to be done...

Celts... Interesting choice!

I've got MapFinder generating some Tiny Emporer maps using the Celts. I'll have to finish playing my current Space Race game first though. I didn't really choose Celts, just copied Moonsinger's Tiny Sid Domination choice ;).

Very interesting idea, especially since this little challenge seems to be the lone spark of forum activity at the moment. I'll try and work something up before the update friday, although this thread would of course be the first...

I decided to play one of the Tiny maps that were waiting for me when I got home rather than continue my Large Spaceship game. This was the first one I tried.

Start (domination limit of 296):

I started off very peacefully, not even producing a warrior out of my first two cities while researching towards Iron Working. I learnt Iron Working in 750BC. I had Iron in my borders, but didn't connect it up initially while continueing to produce warriors and saving gold. The following images are from 950BC just before I attacked the Americans. The English were weak compared to me. I still went for the Americans though as I fancied their Incense (which would already be connected on capturing Philadelphia, so allowing me to drop Lux and get more gold for upgrades), and being in Anarchy they wouldn't be able to grow during the initial turns of the attack.

In 750BC I made peace with the Americans. They gave me Seattle and their gold, leaving them with just their capital. In 710BC I started on the English and quickly knocked them down to size, making peace 4 turns later. They gave me Warwick, leaving them just 2 cities. It took a couple more turns of settling, taking America's last city and England's penultimate city to trigger a Domination victory. The following is my end military:

That was a fun game, but definitely room for improvement. I vastly overbuilt my military. I could have built some settlers instead of gallic swordsmen to win quite a bit sooner.

I've recently been trying some small Sid Conquest/Spaceship games (intending to pretty much wipe out the AIs then go for Spaceship) as the Persians, and Emporer seems a bit easy in comparison. I didn't have much success with the Sid games though, so wimped out and started my current small Emporer spaceship game. I might play a few more of these tiny dominations before continuing that though :mischief:.

I have a feeling that your Celts probably will beat my Celts.;)

I can see why the Celts make a good choice for this challenge. That's why I want to see what I can do with some other civ.

So far I have started two games using an unnamed civ only to find that I was fighting the last war. I am generating more maps using another civ, not to be named either.

If my contrarian approach produces a good result I will post about it. If not, I will call them practice games and try the Celts.

@superslug: If you decide to have regular challenge, I suggest that, for fun, everyone has to include the Mongols as one of their opponents. :D

 Tempting, but I think not.

Hmm played a couple games tonight after finding some maps, with varying results:

750_bc_iro_domination_emperor.jpg

(Edit: woops my screen got cut off, the above pic is a 750 BC game) Iro worked well but really needs the ToA for a good date; I played them to see how the republic slingshot helped out, and it did (traded for the wheel and HBR), and got an SGL at Code of Laws.

It wasnt a perfect map and I wouldnt have played it if the worker move hadnt of shown a river. Ive also tried Egypt (War Chariots suck IMO) and the Aztecs (not enough later AA power and expensive temples). Good thing the GF's out of town or she'd be pissed Im playing "that damn game" so much.

Im going to keep raising my "doable" estimates by 100 years since its bringing me luck. Bring on the competition! /smacktalk

I played 2 games tonight (niether of wich I would post here)

1st - played to much of a farmers gambit and bit the dust early (More than 1.5 min though :D )

The second game I found out at the end that there was not enough settlable land to hit the dom limit with the 2nd opponent down to one city. After the game ended i used Rings to discover that there was a sizable offshore island.

I have about 30 other maps saved and figure at least one of them should garner me a decent game.

I just need to beat that smug looking cat guy :smug:

That always irks me to no end. On the converse of that, Ive tried some tiny Sid continents maps to try to find a landmass with just one opponent and myself with enough land to get to domination. Never did find it, but I dont think I would submit something like that as its a pretty cheap way to win.

I played a map last night as the Iroquois (just to be a little different!) By no means a perfect game but I ended up with a 530BC win which was encouraging. The annoying thing was that I also had a sizable island out there somewhere and I had switched research off before MM so I had to wait for the AI to get some settlers out there before I could claim the mainland to trigger domination. It was a good game so I'll see if I can get closer to 650BC and then submit. I've played a couple of Space/Diplo games recently so it was good to get some aggressive play going :D

Some questions regarding strategy for this kind of game:

I ran into lots of corruption playing Tiny Conquest, should I be building FP asap close to my capital to increase the OCN as early as possible? (PTW not Conquests)

Do you try to play as an XCC rather than as a land grab till space is filled, and if so how many cities would you recommend?
