Welcome to the Election Office!

This is the place for the answers to all your questions concerning the Demogame Elections.

If you have a question have a look at the FAQ, or in the Constitution and Code of Laws.

If the answer isn’t there then either ask in this thread or in the Judicial thread if it’s something you think the judges need to deal with.

Term 1 is already underway, so here’s the schedule for future terms:

All Start and Finish times are at 00:00 GMT (or thereabouts) on the day stated – ie: the beginning of the day.
00:00 GMT is 19:00 (7 PM) EST (or 20:00 EDT, 8 PM ) on the DAY BEFORE eg: 00:00 GMT 24 Aug = 19:00 EST 23 Aug

If you have any questions about the elections or getting elected please ask!

So how do the elections work?
Elections are held every month in the Main Demogame Forum and each term starts on the first of the month. Nominations run for 4 days and start 8 days before the end of the month, elections then run for a further 3 days giving 1 final day to get up and running for the new term. It’s first past the post in the elections, the one with the most votes wins!

How do I get elected?
All our main officials are elected, so if you want one of those jobs either nominate yourself when the nominations start or get someone to do it for you! If someone does nominate you, please accept or decline before nominations close. It’s best to get noticed first, take part in the discussions and contribute to the game especially in the area you would like to be elected for, people are much more likely to vote for you then!

I’m on holiday at the end of the month and won’t be here, can I still accept a nomination?
Yes you can – if you nominate yourself in this thread beforehand and say you’ll be away you’ll be included in the election even if you can’t post in the nomination thread.

When’s the next Election?
Nominations for the next election will open according to the schedule in the first post.

Why do people Accept or Decline their nomination in Bold?
For the simple reason it stands out better and it’s easier to see who has accepted or declined amongst all the posts. You don’t have to bold it, but it helps the Election Office!

Can I nominate myself??
Yes you can! Just nominate yourself in the nominations thread – you may see people nominate themselves and accept, but if you nominate yourself it’s assumed you accept anyway.

What positions are Elected?
President
Minister of Defence
Minister of Foreign Affairs
Minister for Trade and Technology
The Judges (Chief Justice, Judge Advocate, Public Defender)
The Governors (all 6 of them)
Designated Players
Are Deputies Elected? How do I get to be a Deputy?
Deputies are not elected, but appointed by the Minister/Governor concerned. Send a PM or post in the official thread if you are interested.

What if nobody (that’s no one, not Nobody ;)) runs against me?
Then you’ll be elected unopposed!

Extract from the Constitution (just the bits on Elections)

Article H. Elections
The Executive Branch positions, Governorships and the Judiciary positions are all elected positions with a fixed term not to exceed one month.

Article I. Multiple Offices
Citizens may hold only one elected office at any given time, or be a deputy to only one elected office. Citizens may not have more than one accepted nomination at the commencement of the general election.

The complete Constitution is to be found here (or will be when it is posted)

Extract from the Code of Laws (just the bits on Elections):

Section H.1 Elections
The Election Office, a citizen’s office supervised by the President, will perform all actions needed for each election cycle.

Each Governor position will be a separate election, and all will be held each term, even if the city does not exist. In the event the city does not exist, the order of priority will be clearly stated in the election description (ie: Gov. 1, Gov. 2).

The regular election cycle starts at the posting of the nomination threads, and concludes when the last poll, including runoff polls, closes. Nomination threads will be posted 8 days before the end of the current term. Election polls will be posted 4 days later, and will list all accepted candidates for each election. Election polls will be marked private, and last for 3 days.

Each position will be granted to the candidate receiving the largest number of votes in that election. In the event of a tie between two or more front runners, a runoff poll shall be opened between those candidates only. This poll shall run for 2 days, and be repeated as often as needed to resolve the tie.

Except for the first term, all terms will start on the 1st of the month, and end on the last day of that month.

Section H.2 Designated Player Pool
During each regular election cycle, a separate thread will be created during the nomination process for DP Candidates. Any citizen that wishes to be a DP must post in this thread. When the election polls are posted, a separate poll, in multi-choice format, listing each candidate will be posted. Citizens will vote their approval for a candidate by selecting their name.

A citizen may run for an elected office and apply to be a DP in the same term. The DP Pool does not count as an elected office.

Each candidate that receives a vote from more than ½ of the citizens that vote in the poll will be accepted as a DP for that term. The Election Office will put together a list of the Designated Players, ordered by the number of votes in support for that term. In the event of a tie, the order of posting in the nomination thread will be used. All DP’s that actually ran a game session in the previous term will be put below those that did not, regardless of the number of votes. This list will determine the order that the DP’s will be used for game sessions. If there are more game sessions that DP’s, start again from the top of the list.

The complete Code of Laws is to be found here (or will be when it is posted)

Thank you, thank you, thank you for making a schedule. After a whole demogame or two of requesting one put in the nomination thread, I get one. Thanks again!

By the by, the thread looks great! Nicely organized and informative.

Does this mean a govoner would lose their goveronership one month after being elected regardles of weather their city was founded or not? :hmm:

No. That rule states that if a city is still unfounded by the next election, the election for the governor position will be "Election for Governor of City #4 (or whatever number it is)." The name chosen by the current governor won't be included. The only way to lose your governorship is either by losing the next election, or by being kicked out by the people mid-term.

ditto, thanks for the great job you're doing Furiey!! :goodjob:

@RegentMan: Thanks RegentMan, as I could never work out what started when either, a schedule was the first thing I did! Now as long as Outlook reminds me.....

@admiral-bell: I think RegentMan has answered, but if you want to keep your governorship you will have to run in the election next term even if the town has not been founded yet.

yes, if you don't get nominated again and win, you will lose your governorship, no matter what...

Note: you'll find me self-nominated in both the Public Defender and Expatriate Governor races. The PD one went first and takes precedence. I plan to drop one based on who else accepts, as noted in each thread, but just in case I get tied up and nominations close before I have a chance to do that I wanted to make the Election Office aware of the situation. :D

After a frustrating time with the 30 second limit between posts, the Elections for term 2 are now up!

Congratulations to all those elected unopposed, and Good Luck to all the candidates in contested elections.

Elections close approximately 00:00 on the 31 August, 3 days after the poll was opened.

Term 2 will start at 00:00 GMT on 1st September.
