Its becoming a pain for me to build fast Gallic Swordsman because of its extra 10 shield, and upgrades take 90 each, so how can I make a stack of Gallic Swords?

You need only one to trigger a golden age, and with the additional shields you should be able to build enough of them.

If the GW is less than 40 shields, then it's breaking ... The dilemma is: at low difficulty levels, you can win whatever you do; at high levels (especially sid), amassing GW and attacking won't let you go far.

IMHO legion is even less useful than GW ...

There are lot of ways to rush a stack of whatever units! I would recommend you to be more specific with your question next time. Without knowing what difficulty level you are playing, the type of map (big/small/tiny/etc) and the number of civs you are currently dealing with, it would be very difficult for people to answer your question.

This will be interesting. I can only think of like one non-obvious way to do it.

I bow to your knowledge unless you turn up with something really obvious. :D :nono:

Agreed! Find a weak target to kick off your GA and then your core should pump them out. Additional revenue from the GA will enable you to gradually upgrade the warriors that are lying around.

I'd go with DaveMcW's suggestion though. I used the Celts for a recent HoF game because I needed a religious civ but I'd normally favour MW over GS. That 10 shield difference is a massive saving-how frequently do you use the extra defensive point anyway? I'd rather have the extra units to ensure that my attacks succeed and then deal with any possible counterattack before they get to my units.

It's the same reason why I value Ansars over other knights. Cheaper and more mobile-fantastic value. I don't care about the lower defensive value!

Monarch, Continets,Standard, any more details?

At the Monarch level, you don't really need to do anything fancy. You could easily win with the Celts by playing convervatively. Since the Celts is agriculture, just focusing on farming and growing your population as fast as you can (I assume you know how to build and operate settler and worker factory). Don't worry about research! Even at the minimum research you will get Iron Working within 100 turns (with a little bit of luck, you could easily trade your starter tech for Bronze Working; there, you could have Iron Working much sooner than 1000BC). Iron Working is really the only tech that you need.

By not spending any money on research, you should have at least 1000 gold in your treasury by around 1000BC. That should give you more than enough money to upgrade a dozen warriors to gallicswordman, right there. Plus another half dozen gallic swordman through normal production. By 1000BC, you could easily have around 16 gallic swordmans under your command. I'm sure that would be more than enough to start conquering the world.

If you like, you could replay one of my games as a practice run. That one was on a small map, but the principle is really the same as on standard map. Focus on farming and expansion peacefully until you get Iron Working, then have fun commanding your stack of gallic swordmans.

I really don't think I know anything more than you do. In fact, at this moment, you probably know about Civ3 more than I do (since I have been gone for awhile and haven't read up on those latest tip threads).

Moonsinger - I liked your advice on upgrading to Galic Swordsmen. I read this thread yesterday, and then tried a game last night using that technique. Wow, it worked great! I was able to wipe out my starting continent in no time. Thanks!

On another note, I was glad to see that you still post to these boards. I recently started playing the GOTM's again after a long hiatus. I miss not being able to read your posts or those from SirPleb. I'll have to start looking in the strategy forumns for your great advice!

Well, I haven't really been active recently, either...

In my last continents Demigod game, I didn't make units till late late middle ages.
Must've been hard with no workers or settlers. ;)
