Attempt at a Civ4 smiley

Based on the golden letters on the Civ4.com website and the Roman numerals IV behind it, I've tried to make a Civ4 smiley. Any comments or suggestions for improvement?

Edit: 2nd attempt with clearer letters and darker background (note, it's not black)
Edit: 3nd attempt with same letters as 2, and lighter background.
Edit: 4th attempt with darker background and letters cleared up further.
Edit: 5th attempt with a slightly fatter C than 4.
Edit: 6th attempt same as 5, but with a lighter background.

Edit: Number 5 has been added as Official CFC Civilization IV smiley. [civ4] = [civ4]

I would put a (black) border around it, and if you can, try to clear up the letters a bit, but otherwise, good start.

I liked the first background colour a bit more, but I guess the letters did not stand out too well from that.

First background was taken from the Civ4 website brown sky. I have also improved the letters in the 2nd attempt. Perhaps I can take the new letters with the old colour. The issue of lower contrast will remain, though, as you remark.

Ah, well, for Civ V we just need to change the colours and make Ci gold and V silver to make the distinction.

How about trying the brown again, but darken it only so slightly as to make the letters stand out properly?

Black is an overused colour...

What showed as black wasn't really black anyway, but you don't notice the difference when it's this small. Now I've made the background lighter again, while keeping the high contract letters. In the 1st note of the thread I've pasted an image with all three published versions so far.

Thanks. I've transformed number 2 into a gif as that seems to be the smiley save format of choice for this forum.

Added 4th version, letters are further enhanced (see previous post and first post of the thread). The IV is really clear now. Perhaps the golden C could be brushed up just a tad further, but IMNSHO the letters stick out better against the background now. I could try with a lighter background now, but not so sure that'll be as nice.

I like the fourth one best. Maybe make the gold a bit, um, golder? It shows up pretty good on the white background, but not as well on the DarkBlue style. I can still tell it's gold, but it looks, um, brighter, I guess, on the white background in the first post.

Thanks for the feedback, Turner. I'll see what I can do. So far I had only seen it with the default forum style. Problem with a style like DarkBlue is of course that it is dark and blue and the golden C is only a mere two pixels wide. We don't want it to be too blurry or pompous, but perhaps I can add half a pixel of width to it.
