I posted the details on my blog (www.pcserenity.com).

After all sorts of install issues, I then get to the main menu and find only the earth and the title bar. No menu in sight. I then made sure my Radeon X800-XL had the latest drivers and re-installed the game. Still no luck.

This is ludicrous. How does a game get past QA that is clearly this challenged?

Then their support is terrible. 2K Games gets me on the phone, tells me I'm in the queue, keeps me on the phone 10 minutes and then says they're too busy and hangs up.

Unacceptable.

On another forum the lead programmer can't even get his information straight about the latest ATI drivers.

Forgive me but I expect more from Sid and Firaxis. It's clear this product was tested. However, it's also clear that it was not ready for release.

Get an Nvidia graphics card <- better drivers ;)

I have PIII 450 mhz and GeForce FX5200 and I can play the game lol and you cant lol how funny is that ;)

(Also when installing the game make sure to install dx9... I read somewhere else it possibly installs extra dev kit stuff... I am not sure if that s true or not... but I wanted a flawless installation, so I simply choose to install that too... everything went smooth and flawless... after installation I rebooted and played and defeat the ai in under an hour at duel/standard settings hihihi)

I actualy have the same issue -- Nvidia card 5900 XT

What are the latest drivers for it?

Yes, I'll just throw away the $400 I spent on this card and go spend more money on another card that others are having similar problems with. <grin>

Forgive me, but this is not a niche card. I expect a top-flight game to support it properly.

Just because it doesnt work on your machine does not mean it was not tested thoroughly. There are just too many combinations of pc-hardware, drivers, software programs, dll versions etc etc etc to test them all. If Firaxis did, Civ4 would NEVER be released.

Even though it is extremely frustrating, I would either wait for a patch from Firaxis or maybe someone else on this forum will work out a fix for the problem (especially this ATI grafix problem).

I dont think you can blame crappy support of Take2 on Firaxis. Atari (oops, sorry, FAKE-Atari) has crappy support too. EA does as well. Most do, but that is not the fault of the developer of the game (exception would be EA).

@Johnny_Tsunami: The latest nVidia drivers can be found here.

Sadan,

I owned the oldest and largest third-party QA testing company (specializing in games) for 16 years. I know a solid release when I see one. THIS is not a product that should have been given a green light to go Gold. I suspect it was under intense pressure to hit the holiday season and got rushed.

It's also unacceptable to get someone on the phone and then suggest they're reaching someone, keep them on hold for 10 and 20 minutes and then just play a message saying "Sorry, too busy, call back in 24 hours" when you know full well you're likely to get the same message again then!

In fact, it's so bad there now that they have TWO message for the "We're too busy" response. One is a woman and the other is a man's voice.

Far too many people are experiencing bizarre, wide-ranging problems. Also, please read my post a bit more carefully. I said that it was clear this product WAS tested.

Ooo dont say anything bad, if the game doesnt work on ATI cards its ATI's fault. I got the french poster, its my problem I cant read french. The cd's are mislabled.. who cares about it, right ?

Frankly, this is *the* last time I will be pre-ordering a firaxis game. I thought civ 3 was bad, hell it atleast loaded and didnt crash my computer every 2 mins.

ever thing your entire computer is a bug.... for everyone here crying the game is horrible id bet theres 500+ people enjoying there game so much they cant come to post about it.... i myself didnt have a problem...

count me as one of the 500+, frustration is all this is...th eproblems will get worked out. and it is an excellent game. Just work on it, update if you have yo, I'm going to update my sound card cause the music is scratchy...just be patient.

Yup updated my drivers and all works well...

We don't pay money to be patient. We pay money to play the game. So many different things are going wrong for so many different people, it's clear this release isn't solid enough to have been released. Anyone who feels the need to kiss the backside of the developers, go right ahead. As George Bernard Shaw said,"..... all progress depends on the unreasonable man."

I don't think it's asking too much that the product work on mainstream equipment when I buy it. I have two diverse PC's (my ASUS home-built PC and my Alienware Area-51 laptop) and this game won't run on either of them and it fails differently on both of them.

I too have updated all my drivers and that didn't fix anything.

You said that it was released too early so just pretend that it doesn't actually come out until they fix it. Give them a week if they haven't fixed it by then, then you should complain.

The fact is that Firaxis thought they had another month before Gold, then Take2 decided they needed to meet quarterly numbers due to the whole sexgame thing in GTA and the slumping sales associated with it. So, it order to make their quarter, they moved CIV release up....

Imagine if you were at that meeting! Anyway, saw problems coming big time. The fact that a) seems limited to drivers is suprising. And B) that it is such a resource intensive game. Geez...it's TURN BASED strategy...why do I need the best computer to run this?

/going back to Railroad Tycoon.....one

Why Abgar? Why should I have to do that???? Why didn't you wait?

When you pay your rent, do you wait outside for a week just in case the landlord wants to work on something?

Al, I'm with you! I still have RRT and Master of Orion on my system though I haven't been able to get them running in some time now (at least not with sound).

I purposely bought this over Fear, Quake 4 and Call of Duty 2 because I figured I'd get more mileage out of it and that it would work more reliably than the others as well as take much less resources. Surprise!

I've got a P4 1.5GHz with 640 GB Ram, with the Compaq Video driver hardwired onto the motherboard. I bought this rig in 2001, just re-factory installed it a month ago, and haven't updated anything for it yet. cIV works as well as any other game I have.

I will be recieving my new rig withing a week. If it doesn't play on the new one, I'll be really mad. I'm sorry to hear about everyone's problems, but I have to believe it's just some issues with certain settings, not a general rushed and bugged game.

I haven't bought the game. I'm not even getting until tommorow. I know it isn't fun to have to wait, but just give them at least until the end of the weekend. If I was paying rent and the landlord want to work on something for a week, I would rent somewhere else because we would have signed a contract and he would be in breach of it. Of course shelter is required, while civ is not. Although if the problem was found after I had been living there then I would just go camping outside.

As you're more understanding that I am, I suggest this is a thread you shouldn't have any interest in. I'm looking to point out problems, vent and find solutions. You telling me how happy you are doesn't help one bit.

I am happy, that I don't have to be the poor guy on the other end of the line listening to you go crazy over something that is fixable, more than likely without you having to get another video card.

Really, you owned a QA company? Did you test the one of the most advanced games in the world?

Anyways, I'll say it for the tech support guy who needs his job, since he can't:

Calm the f--- down.

BTW, for being an "expert" in QA, you sure forgot to check if your own url link worked correctly.

The general solution is to never buy any software product when it is first released. (I always count "release date" of software as when the first/second patch is out.)

The specific solution is obviously a technical one which requires either
a) waiting for the patch
or
b) describing your particular problem in techncal detail so that one of the people on some forum, who know about technical solutions to those problems, can give you that solution.

The fact that you were put on hold and then dropped means that your particular technical problem has likely already been mentioned and that they are probably working on solving it.

I think RichHeimlich does have a point, its clear that this is a rushed product and thats why i didnt order at the first place, i would wait until the first patch.
