Spearman v. Tank problem worse than ever?

From what I've seen, the Spearman vs. Tank problem is not only alive and well but dramatically worse than it was in Civ3.

On numerous occasions, my smaller highly-promoted, vastly technologically superior armies have been vanquished by head-on attacks from hopeless out-dated units...

Currently, I've had enemy longbowman killing fortified tanks in cities. And massed Cavalry kill SAM Infantry with such speed and ease that I have to think that these brash young cavaliers must stop mid-battle for a lovely picnic.

What I've learned is that it's not important what you have or how good it is, just have a lot of it. I think with a bit of tweaking in the XML files the problem can be solved, but at the moment, it is completely unplayable and I have no idea how they allowed it to be released as it is.

What were their defenses like? If you right-click on your unit, and drag the mouse over to the enemy's unit flag, you can see the chances of success/failure. They could've had highly promoted units, lots of culture and whatnot.

Heh.... I attacked a knight with a gunship and lost (granted, he had some defensive bonuses and I had already fought a few times and was low on health). I'm not complaining, though. I just thought it was funny, watching the animation of a knight hitting a gunship with his lance, and then the gunship dying. Good times....

I agree; seeing modern armor go down to a crossbowman was pityful; particurlay since I've never had the "spear beats tank " phenomenon happen to me when I played civ3

Just wondering but is this another fashionable rant or do you have something to back this up?

haha, thats an awesome momment i would like. Except it to be my knight hitting a gunship with its lance and killing it. I'm pretty sure it should be impossible for a knight to kill a chopper. I mean really? whats a knight gonna do? wait till the chopper runs out of fuel and hack at it when its down?

I witnessed a spearman beating two of my fortified tanks once, ( :l ) if this phenomenon is worse in civ4 than it is in civ 3, Tank contruction is off my list!!

Just two days after buying the game, I've already lost a tank to a spearman. I thought they were going to completely stop this problem, but it was an isolated incident so the awesomeness of the rest of this game outways it.

Hurrah!

And yes, it is indeed realistic, for example during WW2 Russian soldiers took out main German tanks by merely creeping up on them and pouring petrol down their air intakes; and I can not see why ancient spearmen could not do that with olive oil.

*Drools* Olive Oil, foood....

Oh yeah, i heard from some thread here, a poll i think it was, ANYWAYS! They said that russian soldiers also dipped rags in petrol, set them alight and shoved them down the tanks barrels. Is this true? Or just a lie from history?

spearman beating tanks, that must be rough. Next thing you know, spearman will be able to survive a nuke!

Ask the Finns how to defeat tanks with molotov cocktails. (Google winter war)

A version of the Molotov Cocktail which the Russians invented in WWII.

Well I personally think the first "gameplay patch" (not bug squashing/interface smothing patch should add Bonuses v. Melee, Archer and Mounted units to the modern units (with slowly increasing amounts...say none for Musketeers ,~25% for Riflemen up to +100% for MechInf, Mod Armor, Gunships, Marines.... (Bonus v. Mounted about one 'level' less than the Bonus v. Melee+Archers)

That should effectively diminish the problem (and if worried about obsolete armies, allow cheaper upgrades)

Thanks, i just realised something about spearmen vs tank. If a spearman was to jam his spear in the gun barrel, when the tank fired, wouldn't it just send burning splinters everywhere?

What about modern armor of today? Tanks have been technologically advanced since WW2. While that example can be made for tanks of WW2, it cannot be necessarily used for tanks of today.

USe the power of IMAGINATION;)
IMAGINE the spearman placing a manhole trap and the tank gets stuck,
or maybe complete misfourtine and the tank had a gas leak.
Anything can happen.
Outta the blue:goodjob:

Dont complain when the Enemies battleship shinks to your galley. :D

You have inspired me to make a new barmy thread, check it out! http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=134782

I can't say I mind it.

Maybe they should update obsolete units to militia or so that fits in with the era you're playing with the same stats they had originally. That would solve the problem.

Still I've no problems with the occasional stroke of (bad) luck. Keeps things interesting.
