Bleh, after screwing around with my computer for a couple of hours and searching the net for the error message i get when i try to run Civ4, i have finally managed to understand what is causing all the problems. Its the bloody SafeDisc4 copy protection on the game that seems to dislike my dvd-burner.

The error message i get contains the file ~df394b.tmp which is apparantly one of the temporary files that safedisc uses. After searching the net i have found the same error appearing in lots and lots of games, and it seems that there is no really easy way to fix it except installing a crack. Too bad that Civ4 has not been cracked yet! Guess i will have to wait for a crack before i can play this game.... Bloody copy-protection.....

So, if anyone else gets this error, try searching google for ~df394b.tmp. There are a couple of fixes that seems to have worked for some people (other games though so i cant be sure if they will help on Civ, havent worked for me yet at least). Hope this helps someone at least.

*goes back to searching for some way to fix this*

This is about 'civ4 has caused an error and need to be shut down' error?
But I have the same problem even after I unplugged my CD burner

Yep, thats the error i was talking about. After reading a bit more it seems that SafeDisc can apparantly be a bit tricky about having programs like Daemon-tools, CloneCD and Alcohol installed. This is understandable since these are often used to copy games. However, i read in one place that having programs like PGP could also create problems. Which I find a bit strange, but if this is true then i suppose that it could pretty much be any program in your computer or even your motherboard circuit (apparantly VIA chipsets could cause some problems). I find it strange that SafeDisc cant fix this if the problems have been happening for several years......

okay, i called take 2 games, they have no idea. if this is indeed a safedisc problem, then when someone comes out with that no cd crack, we can still play the game. It is only a matter of time before someone make a crack. but, if it is not with safedisc, then we are screwed. I didn't ask if they will give me refund. I know BestBuy has no return policy for software products.

This really sucks i have exactly the same problem. Why do they keep protecting their games with crappy programs like this. I am an honest person and have to suffer the error. Its like they want us to go and download pirated game.

This sucks if u wanna protect ur software do it with right programs.

EDIT: OK i did some Google. It seems that some guys had the same problem in CIV3 in this forum. And someone sayd something about flashing hes DVD drive and got this working. So can anyone know hod do i do this flashing.

Easy to say. I hope the crack will be released soon. By the way is there any good site where they keep status if the game is cracked or not`?

Try uninstalling the burn software. Make a copy first ;)

Edit: Try turning off the software, or install from a plain drive.

Lol I have to use a utility in order to run my legal copy of the game without unstalling my legal copy of Nero.

I had to make an image with my Nero, then mount it with Daemon tools, and then use a program called SD4HIDE.EXE to hide SafeDisc 4.60 protection. It took me a while to get it to work, but the good thing is you only need CD1 image, you don't need to make an image of CD2.

God forbid they allow us to play without a CD.... I am sure there are better ways of copy protection that aren't such an enourmous hassle to the players. I absolutely HATE to change CD's every flippin game I play.
