Lately, I thought how Firaxis managed to present game in announced date, without delays as other games always do. At first game looked pretty neat with some minor annoyances but major game was well done.
And then I tried multiplayer. Thus I got enlightened. Multiplayer is Dead. Not bugeed, but dead. Some of major flaws:
- Lobby - everyone who saw it can understand what I mean. To those who never saw it I can tell only one word: "refresh" -, oh, no! Not simple refresh but CONSTANT refresh. To click on chosen game you got to be really lucky or have lightning reflexes to hit needed string.
- Stability - a lot of times during long games game will drop out. Sometimes that happen, sometimes not, but it just keep happen.
- Password protection. Simple - if you get dropped or will be busy for a while you can set a password on your civ so no one can join game and play as you. Very smart innivation... NOT WORKING. You can set passwords everywhere - that wouldn't work, everyone can join and play as you or others, but still game will generously offer you to set a password.
- You are joining. Waiting. And... Ta-Dah! You are destroyed. Not left with one city surrounded by 20+ modern armour's but destroyed, ceased to be. What point of allowing to join(and strucking game for others while you will attempt to join) only to watch zero on your score.
- Login/Pass. Sure it's ok that password to join GameSpy not remembered...but what's with login? That's ok if your nick is Ox or Joe, but if you are SupA/^\eGApW|\|eR you'll got real problems.
- Out of Sync. Out of Sync.Out of Sync. Out of Sync.Out of Sync. Out of Sync.Out of Sync. Out of Sync.Out of Sync. Out of Sync.Out of Sync. Out of Sync.Out of Sync. Out of Sync.Out of Sync. Out of Sync.Out of Sync. Out of Sync. And so on until end of the game. Still can't figure why that happen sometimes but that looks like error with joining.
- Documents and Settings. Have you ever saw what happened with that directory after a dozen of games? It took me some time to clean my dir out of crap that civ created there.
And some wishes:
- Turn indicator. Really will be appreciated in lobby. A lot of people just join randomly to any non-passworded(pass to join working fine). If there will be indicator on what turn seleced game then a lot of people would find the games they like - some like early game, some late.
Hope others will continue that list of wishes and flaws of Lobby.
