Take-Two buys Firaxis

Grand Theft Auto publisher swallows up Civilization developer, bolstering in-house dev talent.

In late 2004, Civilization fans learned that the long-running franchise was changing owners. French publisher Infogrames revealed that it had sold the rights to the popular historical strategy series for $22.3 million to an unnamed company. In January 2005, it was revealed that said buyer was none other than Take-Two Interactive, which went on to publish Civilization IV under its 2K Games subbrand.

Civilization IV hit store shelves on October 25 to sparkling reviews. Sales must not have been too shabby either, since today Take-Two announced it was buying the game's developer, Firaxis Games, outright. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the two companies did say Firaxis would now become part of 2K Games' suite of studios.

No personnel changes were announced, though Take-Two did make much of the fact Firaxis remains the home of Civilization creator Sid Meier. Take-Two also published the renowned designer's buccaneer adventure, Sid Meier's Pirates! for PC and Xbox. "We’re excited about all of the possibilities ahead of us as we work together to explore new ideas, new products and new consumer markets,” said Meier, who is Firaxis' director of creative development.

Firaxis was founded in in 1996 by Meier and Jeff Briggs, its current CEO and President. The two had previously worked at MicroProse, developer of the original Civilization, which was later bought by Atari. "This is a tremendous opportunity for Firaxis," said Briggs. "2K Games is an energetic label that shares our goals and vision for making great games that stand the test of time."

Today's deal is the latest indication of Take-Two's efforts to be a major presence in the PC game market. The company will publish Bethesda Softworks' eagerly anticipated PC role-playing game, the recently delayed Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, next year. (An Xbox 360 version is also coming out.)

Now that Take-Two not only is the publisher of Firaxis, but the owner of the company as well how do you think this wil leffect Sid and the games he makes?

If this belongs in Off-Topic, send it over there please.

I think this is on topic since it will probably, in some way, affect Civ4 support and xpacs (and Civ5).

My first guess is that it could be good for the Civ franchise since it brings more assets to bear.

I wouldn't worry about this. If it'd been bought by EA or Sony, well that would have been trouble.

My only issue with Take Two is their customer support is abysmal (bastards kept me on hold for 20 minutes, then hung up on me before I could talk to anyone).

Hey, we posted about this at the same time. I wonder whos is the duplicate thread.

We should care. What keeps Take2 from doing to Civilization what they did to Myst?

 I guess as long as the info gets reported it doesn't matter...

This is potentially good and bad for the Civ franchise. I'm not exactly in-the-know when it comes to developers, publishers, and business, but T2 has absolute control, they could drive the game into the ground if it tickled their fancy and no one could do anything about it. If they say development on Civ4 is done, that's it. I wonder if this will have any effects on the release of the SDK?

Negativity aside, this could be a significant resource boost, not necessarily for this version, but for expansions and the like.

Take2 are a decent company and i doubt Firaxis would have just sold themselves out for the sake of it. I'm excited to see what they can do together.

Actually, it's in the best interests of Take2 to have a successful Civ franchise. I bet they let Sid and his crew maintain control over design and development.

They are remaking old classics already anyway so its not like they'll be forced to do something they won't like doing ;) I've the feeling Firaxis next game will be something new though... maybe even so new that its a console title, hopefully not console only though.

But if this means less administrative work for them and thus more time to focus on game development I'm al for it. Hope the retain their creative freedom though. They didn't start Firaxis for no reason.

Why do the bring GTA into this? Is it so well known due to the whole hidden code mishap? Sad if its true. Hope that doesn't reflect on the Firaxis games. Their games and those of Rockstar are very far apart in philosophy imo.

...No personnel changes were announced...
Ah, so this would mean that no current work will be affected/delayed, like work on a possible upcomming patch?

Sid had his problems with the previous company taking control of the CIV franchise and then spun off all those "other" versions of civilization. He then finally got his company back under his control after years.

I highly doubt he would do the same thing again!

I'm a bit depressed about this. I was proud of Firaxis for being an independent gaming studio. Oh well.

The quality of the games will probably still be the same, however; Maxis still makes good games, event though it's owned by EA.

Is this buyout still subject to shareholder voting and SEC approval?

So far Take 2 Games has provided a pretty good lineup of PC games (aside from the Grand Theft Auto series), such as Hidden and Dangerous series, Mafia, Max Payne series, Railroad Tycoon series, Serious Sam series, Tropico series, and Conflict: Desert Storm. I've played some of these games and, unlike EA, they aren't broken up into a billion expansion packs -- Take 2, thus far, has shown to be less of a money-grubbing company when compared to EA.

(Note: most of the games I listed did not have more than 1 expansion, compared to EA releasing more than 5 expansions for The Sims, which really was milked to death, IMO.)

I'm sure they see the value of the Civilization series and will not hold Sid Meier and his crew back from continuously providing us the best damned games ever. (Although rushing out CIV is a small black mark in my book, Take 2... don't do that again. :nono: )

dunno but im not so sure its a smart move on firaxis's part .. if i was sid and jeff i would want to include a way out clause if certain conditions arent kept or met

Not to mention Take2 is going to be the ones to handle Elder scrolls oblivion release too- and that has been delayed til febuary or so-
point? my point? hmm- Guess it's that Take 2 has made alot of money without ever 'developing' anything-hope they let the game programmers do what they do best without interfering-now that they are going to be the ones footing the bill now.
